Default What Will The Lady Zags Out of Conference Record Be This Year??

With the Out Of Conference (OOC) season starting for the Lady Zags tomorrow evening, it has come time to put your money where you mouth has been.

Homers, skeptics, questioners, etc. are all invited to take a swing.

Given the OOC schedule here: https://gozags.com/sports/womens-basketball/schedule

What will the Lady Zags record be after the last OOC game against Eastern Washington University on December 21, 2021?

Winner gets world wide fame and recognition and absolutely nothing else. What do you have to lose?

I think the Lady Zags will put up a fight but lose to Stanford and somewhere along the way will drop another game that they will be favored to win.

Record will be 10-2 going into Christmas.

Take a swing Lady Zag fans.

I'm afraid that this year's transitional squad would finish no better than sixth in the PAC 12, so I'm going to say the OOC record will be 9-3. I don't see any of the upperclassmen stepping up to assume a vital leadership role. A close, painful home loss to Big Sky kingpin Idaho St. will precede L's to neighborhood rival WSU in a brawl, and a wipeout vs Stanford.

Initially, the Zags will have trouble scoring, unsuccessfully experimenting w/ Ana Maria & Maud in the middle before finding conference wins by switching to a three guard lineup of Bree, one of the Troung Twins (or both) Ciara (or Abby). Melody & Yvonne will be tasked with clearing the boards and initiating a running game. If they can't do that effectively, maybe 8-4 is a more reasonable guess.

Idaho State's opening game was last night.

The Idaho State women's basketball team fell to No. 10 University of Oregon 91-34 Tuesday evening in Eugene.
If Idaho State is the King (Queen??) pin of the Big Sky, the Big Sky is going to be really, really bad this year or Oregon is going to be scary good.

    I’m going to say 9-3 after EWU….

And only because of the lack of experience and age. I also think like last year, CLF will be playing a lot of players to give them time on the court with each other. The goal will be getting them ready for conference play.

Side note: LF had 16 points for Idaho last night..good for her!

Can’t wait for tomorrow night to see GU WBB!!

    Go Zag!!

Idaho St. was good last year and brought back everybody. Had Kentucky on the ropes in the first round of the Tourney, but couldn't close it out.

I'd have to say that was an unexpected result. Oregon was even missing 2 starting guards.

Well, you know, under Kelly's guidance, Oregon has been one of the top programs in the country every year. So, after the spanking they received in Eugene, if the Bengals play GU close, or even manage (gulp!) to win, what does that say about the Zag women's prospects this year?

And they just signed two 5 stars and two 4 stars yesterday to go along with their four 5 star sophomores.

You know, I wonder if this (combined with not having to sit out for a season) is one of the reasons for the significant increase in use of the transfer portal?

You can only play 5 players at a time and all of those 4- & 5-stars have been told how good they are since middle school, maybe they need a new school to show their capabilities.

KG owes us at least one 4-star player, maybe we can get one of his unused 4- or 5-star players.

Watching Stanford against hopelessly outmatched Morgan St. The 'Furd is looking kinda sloppy. Up 39-19 at the half but the margin should be another 10-15 points. Almost all of Morgan St.'s scoring is from the FT line, only 3 FGs. Stanford w/ 9 TOs and Morgan St. hanging in there in the rebounding battle.

Stanford simply has too many players. 17 on the roster. Several good players didn't even enter the game until the 3rd quarter. There's just no way Tara can work them all into the rotation.

Utah looks to be much better than last year. Don't know how bad their 2 opponents have been (Lipscomb and Xavier), but they've scored 105 and 106 in the 2 games, hit a bunch of 3's. Could be a good test for GU's defense.

FWIW Montana St. is getting drilled by UNLV 56-28 midway thru Q3.

I have not had a chance to watch a lot of Wbb this year, but I have caught a few games (Arizona vs Louisville, South Carolina vs South Dakota, etc.) and I have seen very little "good" offensive basketball.

Arizona needed overtime to score 61 points. Their offense against Louisville was essentially to have Cate Reese drive to the hoop and chuck up a shot (?) and wait for a foul call. Louisville could not hit the ocean from the beach in the first half. Van Lith woke up in the 2nd half and looked much better finishing with 19 points, although 11 of those points came from the free throw line. Arizona shot 36.7% overall and 26.3% from 3. Louisville countered by shooting 28.6% overall and 18.2 % from long range. Louisville had no right to be in the game but they took 30 free throws compared to Arizona's 14. Louisville at least looked like they had an offense, Arizona just looked like they had better athletes but did not reflect in much of an organized offense.

The South Carolina vs South Dakota game was a little better. South Dakota had nobody to defend USC in the paint and got absolutely killed on the boards 49-25 and points in the paint 38-22. South Dakota had the best looking offense, but somebody put a garbage can lit on their hoop. South Dakota shot 25% overall only to be outdone by their 3-point shooting of 7.7%. If you are getting killed in the paint and you can't make a shot from outside, it is going to be a long day at the office, and it was. South Carolina did not look like a dominating, all conquering Wbb team, just a bunch of good athletes playing against a team with not as good athletes who could not make a shot.

The Lady Zags, while looking disjointed on offense at times on Thursday, their offense was run as well as anybody I have seen this year (with the exception of South Dakota). Nobody changes their line-up as quickly as CLF, so getting the ladies into rhythm always takes some time with the Zags. Keep showing improvement every game. The "tall" bigs, AV and MH need to work on staying in front of the opposition instead of playing from behind. MK and YE do this very well but are going to be undersized against most opponents.

ZagDad, watch a Utah game if you want to see some offense.

Montana St. got drubbed by UNLV 80-42. The Rebs are not a noted wcbb school. Between Idaho St. and Montana St. both getting killed early, maybe the Big Sky stinks this year.

Texas knocked off Stanford. Tenacious defense, extremely physical. Stanford struggled w/ TOs and poor shooting all day. Longhorns got hot in the 4th quarter to take control. Card were not impressive, they are definitely not unbeatable. Can Zags ramp up their aggressiveness and ugly up a game the way Vic Schaefer's teams like to do?

Absolutely. After watching the Lady Zags versus Montana game today, the Lady Zags uglied up the Gonzaga offense and the Gonzaga defense just fine.

If the Lady Zags can't guard any better than they did today, they will be luck to stay within 30 points against Stanford. Very disappointing defense for a supposed defensive team today.

If you want to scout Utah, they are about to kick off against St. Mary's. Free streaming thru Pac 12 site.

Wow, SMC looks HORRIBLE. Trailing 34-8 midway thru Q2. Utah isn't even bothering playing their starters for the most part. Gaels probably would miss the water if they fell out of a boat the way they are shooting.

Did you see where UCONN lost a freshman guard. In transfer portal. Saylor Poffenbarger

SMC much better after halftime, but you can't spot your opponent a 34 pt lead at the midpoint. Gaels "held" Utah about 13 points under their average coming into the game, only allowed 92.

Stanford was up big on Portland at the half, but Pilots battling back in Q3 to make it interesting. Fowler was stymied early but she's gotten going.

Yep, I did and I mentioned in the Montana thread.

She is a 6'2" guard, biggest problem is that she is from Maryland and while Fortier has extended her recruiting reach to the Midwest and South to Texas, she has not pulled in anybody from the East Coast that I am aware of (yet!!). Lots of top tier, P-5 universities between Maryland and here. It would not hurt for CLF to give her a call in any case.
