Default Gonzaga vs UCLA in Las Vegas

I continue to be surprised at how many seats are currently available for the Gonzaga vs UCLA game in Las Vegas. I plan on going and was looking forward to the atmosphere in the new arena for a big time college basketball game. The Duke game on Friday sold out very quickly this summer, and secondary tickets are going for a very high premium. But Gonzaga UCLA doesn't even look to be halfway sold at this point.

You'd think the Final Four rematch of the preseason #1 vs #2 teams in the nation would be a more popular game.

honestly, when duke sold out so quick I didn't even think there was a chance to buy UCLA tickets. I'm glad you posted this. I'm going to try and see if I can make this work.

    FYI

T Mobile has this as covid policy. Don't want folks to be surprised

Following CDC guidance and requirements set forth by the State of Nevada, masks are required for all guests attending Good Sam Empire Classic at T-Mobile Arena. Proof of vaccination and/or proof of a negative COVID test is not required for this event.

Too many travel restrictions for me. I was looking forward to the Mavericks-Wizards game next month, but the AAC requires proof of vaccination or negative test to enter the building. I guess we’ll have a watch party at one of our favorite sports bars.

I was planning on spending the entire week in Vegas, what a great week of hoops. At least I can dream about the game in Austin next year.

Wearing a mask is too many travel restrictions? I'm so confused. You wouldn't wear a mask to watch the #1 team versus the #2 team in the nation and one of them happens to be your alma mater?

Some principles should be stood up for. To wit: Who has the right to tell us what we do with our bodies and health. Put that coffee cup down and slowly walk away from the bacon. I wish you all Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

You’re probably right 03. However, the potential for another lockdown should Covid flare up over the next two months has me spooked as well. I won’t risk several thousands of dollars on the chance that could happen.

Enjoy the games in my absence.

Tuesday of Thanksgiving week vs Black Friday makes a big difference. In addition, UCLA fans/alums do not travel well to most sporting events. Heck I live in West LA and even locals don't want to brave the LA traffic to watch games let alone travel to another state.

it may not be healthy but when i attend the ucla and duke games i plan on having a large bag of popcorn in my lap and a large soda in hand and will be 'actively engaged in eating' all game long.

I'm just curious and won't be responding/criticizing either way, but are you (75+yr old male) unvaxed and unwilling to take a test prior to attending?

I'm not 75, not even close. Why do you, and others on this Board, seem to be so interested in my age?

I get it, you must have seen this picture...

Why should it be necessary to show proof of vaccination and/or take a test prior to attending a sporting event? A month ago, I attended Eric Clapton's concert in Fort Worth. It's been nearly six weeks since that event, and there have been ZERO reports of anyone contracting Covid from that concert, nor have there been any reports of same from succeeding concerts.

BTW, I have natural immunity after contracting Covid 18 months ago.

What a prick-ish question dude. Age has nothing to do with choosing to go see Zags live or not.
I’m 51, fully vaccinated, willing to be tested and able to get time off from work and pay for a trip to Vegas to watch Zags live…but no interest in doing so this year. Agree w Tex, Covid situation can change at any time + as much as I love GU hoops the risks that come w traveling through multiple airports (break through infection but one such risk) during busy holidays time of year + all the prick-ish behavior being exhibited by airline passengers these days just ain’t worth it to me.

Remember when ZaGranny used to post here and would share her amazing enthusiasm and travel stories, while also talking about her health concerns? I really hope all Zag fans would consider that people like her have just as much a right to attend Zag games. If there are public health guidelines in place, I sure hope that as Zag fans with compassion for one another we can follow them even if we disagree with those rules in principle. You don't HAVE to wash your hands after you use the bathroom. You technically CAN sit there with a drink and snack all game. But, in the interest of protecting others, maybe consider extending the grace and courtesy of wearing a mask when you can if that is what is required by the facility.

As a LV local, my feeling is Vegas won’t be going the way of lockdowns any longer now that there is a vaccine available and how tough lockdowns are to a city where so many people’s employment are tied to casinos - but I understand there could be travel issues and not wanting to risk it. Casinos are already feeling pretty crowded again so I understand if that is uncomfortable for people still too. Just saying in case it makes a difference for anyone since it should be a great game and t-mobile arena is a nice venue in a great location in the strip.

Edit to add: another reason why this is a little easier ticket is that is on a Tuesday and it’s a 4:00pm PT start time v Friday 7pm for duke.

Actually, our game is at 7 pm local time; the Bellarmine vs Central Michigan game is the one that starts at 4 pm. Hopefully it does not go into OT, otherwise our game may get delayed a bit.

Speaking of UCLA, I was listening to the Solving Basketball podcast yesterday with guest Ken Pomeroy. KP was talking about UCLA, and referred to this one play that completely changed UCLA's fate:

    https://youtu.be/HOZA4r5Q1Z4?t=4657

Aaron Henry committed a reach-in foul on Jaquez that put him at the line for a 1 & 1, down 3 with 37.7 seconds left in regulation. It's Henry's job to box out Jaquez on the shot, and he does nothing. Jaquez misses the first free throw and it bounces back into Jaquez's lap, then UCLA passes it around and Jaquez ends up with a layup and one, which he makes, to tie the game.

If Henry had simply stepped in front of Jaquez after the free throw, there would be little talk about UCLA and Juzang at the start of this season. Pretty wild.

If anyone is looking to go to the GU/UCLA game still I do have 2 tickets available that I'm no longer going to be able to use. Front row of the upper level for both the poor games on Monday (GU v Central Mich/UCLA v Bellarmine) and the big game on Tuesday. Willing to sell just Tuesday as well. Just looking to get my money back for them. PM if interested.

Not to make a big deal of this but private property owners, for one, have that right. They have decided to comply, but not require vax or neg tests. Additionally, a doctor has the right to put a 72 hr hold on anyone they deem a danger to themselves or others. If a CAT 5 hurricane is bearing down on your neighborhood, the gov. has the right to force you out. Lots of examples.

As for ticket sales, Duke is a basketball school and their fans want one last hurrah with Coach K - tough to get home tickets to games, I suspect. As said above, L.A. has so many teams it's just almost impossible to get them. UCLA is a basketball school whose football team is enjoying a slight uptick and virtually no one with a football team thinks about basketball until football season is over.

We don't have a football team and so I think we fail to appreciate just how much football dominates the discussion. To the extent L.A. sports radio covers UCLA (which would be hardly at all right now) it would be about the football team, even though they're the 2nd ranked BB team. They will pay attention to the game, probably watch, but at most schools, excitement about basketball doesn't start until football season ends. Basketball is an afterthought even at Kentucky right now with their FB team doing well.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

This is making me laugh way too hard. But it's a gastropub! And a "complimentary cup of water will be provided upon request"!

Um, yeah, I'd be sticking to the $14 plastic cup of Budweiser.
