Game 3 going down to the wire. Sky up 1 w/ 31 seconds left. Sloot didn't score at all until late in the game. Now has 6 pts to go w/ her 13 assists. Cooper and Quigley doing most of the scoring.

Chicago leaving the door wide open. Turnover, Connecticut missed potential go ahead bucket, Sloot rebound, she was fouled, hit 1 of 2 FTs.

Sun missed again, Parker rebound, she got fouled, she also only hit 1 of 2. But Sun didn't get another bucket. 86-83 final. At worst this will go to Game 5 back in Connecticut. Maybe just finish it in 4 in Chicago? So...the Sky won a home game, how about that?

No Dana Evans today, that might've been the key to victory. Sloot played 37 minutes. Brown played 3 minutes.

Sky win 86-83!! One victory away from the WNBA finals.

What a helter-skelter finish. With Sky up by 1, Quigley has the ball ripped out of her hands and Briann January (Spokane - LC HS) misses a left-handed lay-up. Sloot gets the rebound but only hits 1 of 2 free throws so Sky up 2. Sun set up a play for Thomas. Thomas takes it to the hoop against Parker, the ball rolls around the rim falls off. January gets the O-Board and immediately puts it back up and the ball just falls off the rim. Parker rebounds and is immediately fouled. Parker hits 1 of 2 for a 3-point lead but Connecticut only has time for a half court heave. Either team could have won the game, but the Sun stumbled just a bit more. When the Sky score 80 or more points, they are difficult to beat.

Coming into the post season, the Sun only lost 6 games all season. The Sky have won 2-3 in this series and are 1 win away from sending Connecticut home for the year.

Sloot only scored 7 points (3-8) but they all occurred in the 4th quarter in crunch time. To go with her 7 points, CV had 13 assists, 5 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block with only 2 turnovers. Parker had a decent all-around games with 10 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 block to go with her 3 turnovers. The player of the game for the Sky was Kahleah Copper with 26 points (9-14), 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals to go with 1 turnover.

Sky won the rebounding battle 35-30, won the o-board battle 12-7 and had fewer turnovers 12-16. Sky shot 46.3% overall and 45.0% from long range. Should have been much easier victory but with the Sun shooting 48.3% overall and 45.0% from 3 kept them in it.

Chicago going for the series win on Wednesday, October 6 at 5:00 PM PST on ESPN.

Meanwhile Phoenix is beating the crap out of Las Vegas. How weird would that be if the Sky and Mercury end up in the Finals? Both are loaded w/ talent, but didn't really play up to it during the season. Regular season doesn't count for much. Last 2 MVPs have been disappointing to say the least in the post season.

Obviously Las Vegas forgot to board the plane to Phoenix. The Aces level of play was horrible all game. They shoot 30.9% overall and 14.3% from 3. Were absolutely killed on the boards (58-29) and assists (24-12). The only stat won by the Aces was the turnover battle 8-12.

#1 seed and #2 seeds are 1 game away from being put away by the #5 and #6 seeds.

There is something in the air in this year's WNBA.

You have to give the ladies of the WNBA credit. Instead of the charters their NBA brethren take, here are the travel arrangements the Sky and Sun had to make to be ready for their 2-day turn around for game three.

Travel has long been a subject of debate in the WNBA, and Connecticut coach Curt Miller broached the topic after the Sun's 79-68 semifinal victory to even their series 1-1 with the Chicago Sky. Both teams fly to the Windy City on Friday for Sunday's Game 3 (1 p.m. ET, ESPN), but it will take six different commercial flights.

Miller said the Sun traveling party will be split up among three flights taking off from two airports: in Boston and outside of Hartford, Connecticut. The Sky, meanwhile, will be split up among three flights taking off from three airports: in Boston, outside of Hartford and outside of Providence, Rhode Island.
Our Lady Zags have it much better than most of the WNBA, at least concerning travel to away games.

Is it any wonder the ladies spend 8-9 months of the year playing overseas?

The Aces were pathetic today. No fight in them at all.

I've long thought that the Wilson-Cambage pairing doesn't really work, nothing about these playoffs is helping convince me otherwise. Here's my biggest theory of the day though--Chelsea Gray is playoff kryptonite at this point in her career. In '19 the Sparks were swept in the semis by the Sun and lost by 9, 26 and 22. In '20 the Sparks lost a one off to the Sun, by 14. And now this is happening to the Aces. I've never really been a fan of Gray. She does plenty of highlight reel stuff, but I don't like her game. And as I have pointed out her teams have sucked in the playoffs 3 years in a row. The starting PG has to take a lot of blame for that.

    From Some Highlights from ESPN:

2021 WNBA playoffs: Ranking the Semifinal Teams
    ESPN

Just like we all predicted, right? Not exactly. The Phoenix Mercury and Chicago Sky shook up the 2021 WNBA playoffs on Sunday and lead their respective semifinal series 2-1. Going into the playoffs, the No. 1-seeded Connecticut Sun and second-seeded Las Vegas Aces seemed on a collision course for a WNBA Finals meeting, but now both need victories on the road Wednesday to keep their seasons alive.

    2. Chicago (actual seed: 6): Chemistry seems to be working well for the Sky, too. Even after its Game 2 loss, Chicago seemed to understand what went wrong -- especially in the fourth quarter of that game -- and how to move on. This series has been evenly matched, but Chicago has been able to go at the heart of Connecticut's strength -- its defense -- and win twice.

Voepel: Courtney Vandersloot vs. the Connecticut defense. Sloot's playmaking has been the heart of the Sky's success in this series, like it has all season. She had a record 18 assists in the first game and 13 in Game 3. She had six in Game 2, which isn't bad, but the Sun defense took control of that game and limited Chicago to nine points in the fourth quarter and 68 overall.

Cohen: Can I pick the entire Chicago roster? I am so impressed by how well his team is playing. The Sky bamboozled most people who watched them all season, never finding any consistency and losing games they should have won. Vandersloot is possibly the best point guard the WNBA has ever seen, and playoff Candace Parker is an amazing thing to witness. And, of course, all the other players on the Sky are playing their roles, fitting in and helping the team peak at the perfect time.

Red hot start by the Sky. They jumped out to an 11 point lead. Sun closed to within 3 (hasn't basically the same thing happened every game this series?). Sky up 32-26 thru Q1. I think a high scoring, up tempo game favors them, but you'd like to see them limit Connecticut's scoring a little bit more than that.

January is out w/ an injury. Whoever is guarding Sloot...isn't doing a very good job. She had 13 in Q1!

Good thing Chicago is shooting lights out, because it's beyond obvious refs are trying to force a game 5. Sun allowed to mug Sky players w/ impunity, no calls, on the other end there have been numerous phantom calls. It's a joke how bad the officiating has been.

Sloot has 3 fouls, still in Q2.

Not really. Sloot is 3-3 from 3 and 5-6 overall. Bad news for the Sky is CV picked up her 3rd foul halfway through the second quarter. The 2nd foul was a clear phantom foul called by the ref from behind who could not see anything. Her 3rd foul was also a tough one that 90% of the time is not called.

Chicago is shooting lights out. Connecticut is trying to hang with the Sky. Parker has no chance against Jones unless she gets help. Numerous times Jones just spins around Parker and lays it in. If they keep up the scoring in the 2nd half, this could be NBA numbers we are talking about.

Sky up at halftime 54-41. Both the Sky and Sun slowed down the scoring in the last 5:00 minutes of the 2nd quarter particularly when Sloot went out with her 3 fouls to finish the half on the bench.

Sun trying to keep pace with Sky, but difficult to make up ground when the Sky are shooting 57.6% overall and 61.5% from 3 including 8 made 3's in the first half.

Two big issues for the Sky are rebounds and turnovers. In the first half, Sky staying close on the rebound end 17-19, but have allowed Connecticut to get 9 (out of 19 total) o-boards in the first half. On the turnover front the Sky are doing better only having 4 turnovers (unfortunately all 4 are Sloot's) in the first half compared to 5 turnovers for the Sun.

What are the Sky doing? Had an 18 point lead, down to 9. 9 TOs this quarter. Sloot has 8 for the game. I think 4 possessions in a row w/ a TO. Looks like the couldn't stand prosperity and trying to give the game away.

At the end of 3, Sky up 65-58. Sky scored all of 11 points in the 3rd quarter. If they weren't turning it over (6 turnovers in the 3rd quarter), they dribbled out the clock having to take a heave or shot a contested 3-point shot. Worst quarter I have seen in a long time.

Sky need to quit with the turnovers, and take good shots. Connecticut did make 5-6 3s in the 3rd quarter to help the Sun bring down the lead.

    10 minutes to go Sky.

I gotta hand it to Parker, she's made a BIG difference for the Sky in the playoffs. Copper has been really good, Stevens has been good, Sloot has been doing Sloot things.

And I can't stand the Sun, so I'm really happy to see them get ousted. That's some pretty big egg on their face, best record in the league, MVP, MIP, COY...whupped in 4 games in the semifinals.

Aces are going to force a Game 5, so Sky get a little extra rest.

Parker has been somewhat inconsistent with her play in these playoffs, but she has been very consistent as a team leader and motivator. I think she has been that steading influence the Sky have needed to level out the highs and lows. As a former defensive player of the year, she has been easily beat numerous times by this year's MVP Jonquel Jones. When she is on offensively she has been a big assist to the team and her rebounding has been a relatively constant. Might just be the last piece the Sky have needed to get over the hump.

Copper has had a breakout year. She is relatively long, and extremely athletic. If you try and guard her with a big, she simply drives around them. If you try and guard her with a guard she goes over, above and through them. She is simply going to get hers, and as an opponent, you have to limit the damage done by the other four players to stay in the game.

Stevens also has had a kind of break out year. At 6'6" she brings height and length to the Sky while retaining the ability to hit the 3. It will be interesting to see if she can handle Griner (6'9"-Phoenix) or Cambage (6'8"-Las Vegas) in the finals. Griner has played very well so far in these play-offs, while Cambage has been very hit or miss.

In game 1 when Sloot got those 18 assists, the Sun coach, MVP Jones and Dewanna Bonner all said that Sloot carved them up and if the Sun were to win the series, they had to make things difficult for CV. By game 4, the Sun backed off of Sloot, covered the passing lanes and clogged up the middle making passing into and through the key a dicey proposition. While this worked effectively covering the Sloot drives and CV passes into the key, leading to the eight turnovers. It also left CV very open around the perimeter and she made them pay going 5-6 from 3. I think Courtney was trying a little to hard yesterday in trying to get the ball to her teammates, trying to make passes, that simply were not there, but she made up for it with her shooting.

I think many of the WNBA commentators, both those at the game and those back in the studio tend to forget that while Sloot is the best facilitator in the league, she did score 2,000 points in college and if the Sky need her to score she has that ability.

Congrats to the Sky and to CV and AQ. It only took 7 years to get back to the WNBA finals so this time let's finish it; Let's put a ring on this season.

Well it's gonna be Phoenix as the opponent in the finals. Griner has been pretty much unguardable all during the playoffs. Taurasi is old and hobbled and her play has been up and down...but she's still DT. Won this game w/ 14 4th quarter points. Hell of a game, some big momentum swings back and forth during the final quarter, but the Merc emerge victorious.

Truly the regular season is meaningless. #5 vs. #6 in the Finals. Who would've ever thought that would happen?
