Thread: BYU GONZALES IS BACK, GUSTIN REBOUND MACHINE, COUGARS WANT TO POUNCE SAT. 23 JAN.

Default BYU GONZALES IS BACK, GUSTIN REBOUND MACHINE, COUGARS WANT TO POUNCE SAT. 23 JAN.

BYU is coming to the Kennel on 23 Jan. 2021. The last meeting at home was like a UFC fight. First JT was knocked out of the game with a broken nose. Then Katie Campbell suffered a season ending leg injury going up for a layup.

Next JT came back in the game with gauze hanging out of each nostril and shot and made two free throws for Katie. Then with the game still on the line 24 second clock near 0, one of the Truong's covered behind the 3 point line shoveled the ball to JT. Jill with players all around her put up a 3 pointer with gauze hanging out of each nose and made it.

Lets look at the BYU player starters and then their key subs so far this year.

    * #2 Gonzales (5'10") Averaging 20.2 points per game, has 23 steals, shooting 37% on 3 pointers (20-54). #2 has attempted 155 FG.

    * #12 Gustin (6'1") Averaging 12. 3 points, and 13.5 rebounds per game. Good at following up her shots. #12 has attempted 98 FG.

    * #13 Harding (5'9") Averaging 12 points per game. Shooting 32% on 3 pointers (16-50). #13 has attempted 106 FG.

    * #5 Albiero (5'8") Averaging 5.2 points and 4 assists per game.

    * #22 Hamson (6'7") Just moved past her sister on the all time block list at BYU. Number one is her mother. From Lindon, Utah.

    #10 Graham (6'0") Averaging 7.5 points per game. Shooting 48% on 3 pointers (15-31).

    #11 Smiler (5'8") Averaging 4.8 points per game. Shooting 50% on 3 pointers (13-26).

#15 Perri (6'5") From Pleasant Grove, Utah.

So looks the BYU has two starters #2 and #13 that like shooting 3 point shots. In addition they have 2 sub players #10 and #11 that are very proficient at 3 point shooting.

Also #2 Gonzales loves driving to the hoop if you give her chance. #13 Harding also gets her share of layups.

#12 Gustin is always hits the boards and gets her points in close.

BYU game Thursday with Pacific was canceled to due to Covid tracing concerns. This info was on the Pacific web site. BYU web site had nothing.

Just a reminder Covid is public enemy number one. Our game Thursday with San Diego already has been canceled due to Covid, as San Diego program is currently in a 14 day shut down.

Lady Zags keep your guard up against Covid 24/7 and hope BYU WBB does the same.

BYU’s Gustin, Gonzaga’s Ejim Collect UCU WCC Weekly Honors

Story LinksSAN MATEO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its University Credit Union Women’s Basketball Player and Freshman of the Week for January 18, 2021.

UCU #WCCHOOPS PLAYER OF THE WEEK LAUREN GUSTIN, SO., F – BYU
Sophomore forward Lauren Gustin racked up a game-high 16 rebounds and 12 points in the Cougars’ lone contest last week, an 80-63 home win over Saint Mary’s. Gustin, whose double-double was her seventh of the season, also tallied three assists and two steals in 36 minutes of action. Gustin’s relentless effort on both sides of the floor helped limit the Gaels to 37% shooting and gave BYU a 34-22 advantage in points in the paint.

UCU #WCCHOOPS FRESHMAN OF THE WEEKYVONNE EJIM, FR., F – GONZAGA
Freshman forward Yvonne Ejim was instrumental in GU’s sweep of Santa Clara and San Francisco this week as the freshman averaged a season-best 8.5 points over the two-game span. Against Santa Clara, Ejim came off the bench to score seven points in 16 minutes of play, finishing 2-of-3 from the floor and 3-of-6 from the charity stripe. She added two rebounds in the win.

The Calgary, Alberta native shined in Saturday’s 76-52 victory at San Francisco, finishing with a season-high 10 points off a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor. Ejim provided much-needed assistance when GU’s starting forward LeeAnne Wirth struggled with foul trouble, and she handled San Francisco’s posts inside, helping the Zags outscore USF 42-24 in the paint. For the weekend, Ejim missed just a single shot, finishing 87.5 percent from the floor. She also contributed 1.5 assists per game for the Zags.

In the AP poll the Lady Zags stayed at 20th.

A interesting team to watch is Georgia they move up 4 spots to #22 in the AP poll, they are 12-1. Georgia plays their next 2 games against top 25 teams. Their next game Thursday 1/21 is against #4 South Carolina. On Monday 1/25 they play #15 Arkansas.

So Georgia is nipping at the Zags hills in the rankings. Zag Fans need to root for South Carolina to put on a good showing Thursday against #22 Georgia.

#4 South Carolina just beat #15 Arkansas 104-82.

Just got done watching Celebrating America hosted by Tom Hanks. Awesome performances by a wide array of singers. You may never see anything like this again it was awesome. Tom Hanks is in front of Lincoln Memorial where several of the singers perform.

John Legend was so impressive. Katie Perry closes the program singing her lungs out while in back of her behind the National Monument the most beautiful fireworks display I have ever seen in my lifetime. Singers that I remember country artists Tim McGraw and Tyler Hubbard duet of their new song "Undivided". Lets see the Foo Fighters will make you jam. Ant Clemons sing Better Days with Justin Timberlake. Wow Ant Clemons is quite the singer high range.

Bruce Springstein is the opening singer you don't want to miss it. Also singing Jon Bon Jovi, Lin Manuel Mirand, Black Puma.

I'm sorry I can't remember all the singers names.

They will be having Celebrating America on the local channels from 8:30 PM to 10:00 PM tonight again. Don't miss it because of the times it was a virtual celebration shared for all of America to watch and we may never see anything like this again. I was deeply moved it gave us direct access to performances from all over the United States, and unfettered access to everything.

If you enjoy music and you Love America and its diversity you won't want to miss this once in a lifetime chance. Come and sing and dance along. God Bless the United States of America

Portland WBB web site says their game with BYU is canceled today in abundance of caution (Covid). Said Portland next game is Sunday (non conference game) but that is still to be determined.

Guess we will sit back and cross our fingers about Saturdays game with BYU. The big question is this on BYU end. BYU has a little blip with how long ago the game was canceled going on 4 hours something.

Perhaps our local Spokesman Review can give us some info on our Saturdays game with BYU?

DePaul vs. Butler. Butler is truly awful, there's almost no possibility of DePaul losing to them. UConn just beat them something like 100-35.

BYU beat Pacific today 81-60. I watched the game.

#2 Gonzales looks like she is getting faster as the season progresses. She was 7-11 FG, with 5 steals in the first half alone. For the game she scored 23 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists, 6 steals. She set the tone in the first half that Pacific could not recover from. Several times a opposing player send a slow pass on top and she would jump out steal it and take it coast to coast. She also after making a basket would linger and steal a inbounds pass after making a bucket, catching the opposing team sleeping.
Gonzales also was good at getting to the basket around a curl screen for a layups. She also while dribbling to the basket passed off to #5 Hamson for wide open lay in. Several times a opposing player made a pass on top and she would jump out steal it and take it coast to coast.

#22 Hamson had a good game 6-9 FG, 9 rebounds, 5 blocks, 3 steals. BYU broadcaster said she has been improving as the season goes on.

#10 Graham was 3-5 on 3 pointers today, and added a long jumper for 11 points.

#5 Albiero had 6 assist and 6 rebounds.

#15 Perri (6'5") Played a lot of minutes in the 1st half. She has a nice range on jumpers, and also capable on 3 point shot. She was 3-5 FG in the 1st half.

    Note:

#10 Graham is now shooting 50% on 3 pointers.

Its going to be a battle underneath the basket.

    Must stop #2 Gonzales.

Lady Zags going to have to play their best game of the year in the WCC.

CLF must bring the killer extinct to a game for the first time this year in the WCC.

#2 Gonzales played in 2019, when she was named WCC Newcomer of the Year after leading the Cougars to three straight wins over Gonzaga (which lost only two other games all season). Gonzales averaged 18.7 points in the three wins. BYU coach Jeff Judkins has called her the best player in the WCC.

“Shaylee is really hard to guard,” Fortier conceded.

#2 Gonzales has extra help this season in sophomore forward #12 Gustin (12.3 points, 13.5 rebounds), who is second nationally in rebounds per game among players with at least five games. Gustin sat out BYU’s game against Pacific on Tuesday due to a contact tracing issue but is cleared to face Gonzaga.

Won't go over the previous analysis for the BYU game, it stays the same, just delayed a couple of weeks.

Some added incentive for BYU and the Zags tonight. ESPN's bracketologist has dropped the Lady Zags to a 6th seed despite a pair of double digit wins last week. Once again, it is not so much what the Lady Zags do, but what the P-5 teams do. If the Zags want any chance at a decent seed, they need to "Just Win Baby".

BYU is currently listed in the 64 team bracket as an 11th seed with an "at-large" bid. They are not included at all in the 48-team bracket. To move up, they need some quality wins and maybe the conference championship. Tonight gives them the opportunity to move toward both.

    Three keys to tonight's game:

    1. Stop the dribble drive before it gets to the key. Limit the number of lay-ups. Make the Cougars hit jump shots.
    2. No wide open shots, keep a hand in the face of every shooter. BYU can run up the score if you give them wide open shots.
    3. Value the ball. Every turnover is one less chance to score for the Zags and one more chance to score for the Cougars.

Only 3 hours until game time,

JT needs to start taking jumpers. Forget the layups among the trees, better percentages with JT jump shots, and lets get some more 3 point shots also. Playing BYU game right now not to our advantage. Stop playing JT in the post. Why is JT riding the bench so much in 1st half. CLF bad idea playing JT in post.

Kayleigh 3 pointer at the buzzer before halftime sweet. Zags up 34-22 at the half.

Cierra seems slow to play against BYU speed. Like the the Troung twins playing together, like Abby on the court with JT. We need to take more jump shots and 3 pointers. Stop playing JT in the post with the trees, let her take jump shots and 3 pointers.

Good finish to the first half. Now lets keep the pedal on the gas in the 2nd half CLF.

Zags up 44-34 going into 4th quarter. It was a ugly 3rd quarter tons of turnovers for Zags not playing well. Still posting up JT underneath why I don't know. Troungs getting sloppy with ball, no one stepping up for Zags in 2nd half thus far.

We left BYU with wide open 3s lucky they made one and missed the rest must do a better job in 4th quarter, must get our offense going Lady Zags.

Another Good day we got to play beat Covid for another game and escaped with a win. ZAGS win 63-56.

LeeAnne, Jenn, and Jill all missed a free throw at the end of the game, come on Lady's practice those free throws.

Zags win 63-56. Bonehead move towards end of the game Cierra Walker pushing off a BYU player with both hands then ramming her on the way up the court lucky she did not get thrown out of the game. Then after cooling off on the bench momentarily, Cierra was brought back in and hit two clutch 3 pointers that won the game for the Zags.

Jill needs to practice her free throws, choking on the 2nd one twice this game in the clutch when every point counts. Why should we give the ball to you at the end of the game when you can't make the free throws?

OK lets start with the positives:

    WE WON

JT turned on the switch in the 2nd quarter and hit a couple of 3 pointers etc., Kayleigh put a explanation point on the end 2nd quarter putting us up 12 points at half time and ending the half on a 18-2 Run.

Jill finished with 18 points and hit a couple of key jumpers in the 2nd half when BYU was threatening. JT also had 1 block and 2 steals. Kayleigh finished with 11 points. Cierra finished with 9 points, including 2 clutch 3 pointers that stopped the bleeding after BYU had tied us with one of many made 3 pointers in the 4th quarter.

Jenn had 3 steals and 2 blocks, 7 rebounds. LeeAnne had 2 steals. Melody had 6 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block off the bench. I thought Abby played well in the 1st half.

Kayleigh, Kaylynn, Anamarie and Melody made both of their free throws (8 points) way to go ladies without those points we would have lost. Every point and every free throw matters in tight games.

Good job getting to the free throw line tonight Lady Zags, 22 attempts from the Charity Stripe.

Out rebounded BYU 36-28. Though one time BYU where they had 2 offensive rebounds and ended with a forever possession for BYU.

    Negatives:

We played horrible defense on BYU from the 3 point line, just left them wide open all game. Lucky for us they did not hit many of them until the 4th quarter, but it came close to costing us the game in the 4th quarter.

Other than the 2nd quarter we played a lousy game. Zags only had 9 assists for the game (2 of those were at the end of the game finding Cierra. JT was on fire in 2nd quarter. So I was complaining several times about CLF using JT as a post player, especially with taller players, why when you have so many big tall bodies IE Wirths etc on your team.

With the Cougars trailing 52-47 with 3:14 to go, a Gonzaga flagrant foul gave the Cougars two free throws and the ball. BYU capitalized, as Harding nailed both free throws and Gustin scored a layup to bring the Cougars within one, 52-51.

Troung twins got really sloppy in the 2nd half they both finished with 4 turnovers.

Jenn had a bad shooting night. Both Jenn and LeeAnne contributed on defense, especially the first half. Jenn still scored 8 points.

We did not pass the ball well tonight. Cierra looked to being playing slow in the 1st half, then went off the deep end mentally when we were up 5 points late in 4th quarter, by getting a technical not something you expect from a Senior especially. But Cierra re-tied the boot strings and came back tough, getting those two clutch 3 pointers that's what we want from our Seniors.

To sum it all up we won, lets learn from our mistakes, and when we play BYU next time lets apply lessons learned.

Bummer Negative its along time until our next scheduled game next Thursday. Lets keep our guard up 24/7 Lady Zags against Covid, and hope our opponents next week do the same. We Love our Lady Zags.

Interesting Hamson was only on the court for 17 minutes, had some foul trouble early also. Even though we had a height advantage with Wirth twins when Hamson was out could do nothing underneath. Perry only played 2 minutes.

Please someone explain to me when we had this height advantage why was CLF using JT in the post with a Wirth twin hovering around the 3 point line? My worst moment of the game was a pass to JT in the post, boom instantly covered by a triple team, she managed to get the ball out to a wide open LeeAnne for what would have been a uncontested layup, but LeeAnne was in la la land looking in back of her. Talk about not having your head in the game, broadcaster tried to make a excuse for LeeAnne but I did not see it as plausible. JT cutting to the basket is good but with all of our bigs having her in the post is a head scratcher for me.

I am going to chalk this up as another poorly coached game for CLF. Was hoping this would be a statement game for Zags, but once again CLF in the 2nd half seemed to send the message to opposing team that they can play with us.

Or was the BYU coach Judkins some how out manuerving CLF, putting his team in position to win.

Another observation Cierra in full court pressure by herself is another head scratcher. She is not the speediest of guards in the first place, it just seems to set her up for failure. Then on the one play that she blew a top you had 3 BYU in the back court, and they were clearly setting her up to make a stupid foul in the first place. So she ran in to the player just standing their who was hoping to get a foul called on her. Well we all know what happen from their. As a coach you need to put your players in the best possible situations to succeed. My opinion CLF was like a deer in the headlights the 2nd half. CLF never got her players to buckle down and start covering the 3 point line. What was really terrible is we kept on giving their best 3 point shooters wide open shots.

Looking forward to getting Ejim and Eliza back in the mix next week. Should also be a telling week for the WCC, who will make a move in this weeks Thursday and Saturday games?

JT in the 2nd quarter once again you looked like the player from last year. JT shoot about 50, three point shots a day in practice muscle memory. Of course continue to practice your mid range jump shots, 2 of them missed everything last game, oh and yes my pet peeve those left handed layups.

With 6 or 7 games left to go in the WCC for the Zags, now it's going to become very interesting. We play San Diego once or twice, BYU, LMU. We have something to prove against all 3 of those teams. WCC games to follow this week below:

    Thursday 4 Feb.
    Loyola Marymount
    San Diego
    6:00 P.M.

    Pacific
    Santa Clara
    6:00 P.M.

    Saturday, February 6
    Loyola Marymount
    Brigham Young

    A win...

A mid season struggle can be good... reminds everyone that these games are not going to get easier.
Every game will be one where you will be challenged by a team that if they can beat you.. it will make their season.

GU WBB needed this type of game... something they haven’t seen since the first few games of the year. Makes you work harder knowing there other good teams out there.

Time to rest and heal and get ready to finish the season out...

    Go Zags!! “Just Win Baby”
