The Ivy League is set to cancel all fall sports in a move that could reverberate nationwide.

The conference won't entertain any sports competitions until after January 1. That obviously means several winter sports that begin during the fall will have shortened seasons on top of the fall sports disappearing for the year. That's an enormous move, and the Patriot League could be following closely behind.

Ivy League schools don't rely on the money generated from sports as much as other schools do, so this may not directly lead to other conferences doing the same thing. That said, you can bet schools across the country will look at this as a sign things may wind up going this way nationally.

Honestly, whatever happens needs to be agreed to nationally. You can't have the SEC playing fall sports while the Pac-12 waits a few months to open up. The NCAA needs to lead on this issue and, frankly, a decision has to be made soon. We're in July and college football is supposed to kick off in late August. There isn't much time left to formulate a plan.

I said it before and I'll say it again.

Lock down, everybody and every thing for 6 weeks. Only essentials. Health care, grocery and pharmacy to put you online or phone orders in the trunk. Truck drivers to deliver to food and prescripts to those places, Skeletal staff for utilities, for prescription delivery through the mail, and Law Enforcement to pick up those idiots that just refuse to obey. They will serve the 6 weeks (or until they are up) in jail, extended to 14 days after the lock down is over.
Every worker gets $5000, including landlords and bosses, but no corporations or companies. NO RENT for 2 months, but no payments to the banks by the landlords for two months. Utilities, cable tv, cell phone, credit cards etc get paid.
When the 6 weeks are up, people will burst out ready to spend that money. The economy will rebound.

We lose this season of MLB, Nascar etc, but we get ALL the college sports, the NFL and all fall, winter and spring sports. The NBA can go ahead because of their bubble/campus plan.
All tests go to health care, people that are transported and those they live with. Their quarantine lasts until they are proven clean.

Nope. Should have been long enough to dwindle the numbers where contact tracing and isolation could have been done to stay ahead of it, like nearly EVERY OTHER COUNTRY DID. That's the whole idea of lockdown/curve flattening (plus keeping hospitals from being overrun). Now we have overrun hospitals in addition to all the other societal problems (including lack of sports). Had we not jumped the gun, this would have been a minor endeavor in comparison going forward. The U.S. now has 25% of the deaths worldwide with only 4% of the world's population. Mindboggling.

Willandi is correct. Now that we have too many infections to contact trace, severe testing shortages, and another PPE shortage that will kill healthcare workers, there are two options. Hard social distancing, or a vaccine. Trace out the infection curve trajectories and see where they are heading without intervention. Even if the peak were today (which it's not), you have the other HALF of the curve to get back down to. UW says 200,000 deaths by November without intervention.

The lockdowns WERE completely useful. Saved tens of thousands of U.S. lives. Leaders (and the public) panicked, reversed course early, and didn't see the plan to its fruition.

It's fine if people have differing opinions on this. But for those who disagree, I'd want to hear alternatives with evidence to prove its effectiveness. So far, Washington is doing well in comparison. Test positivity is holding relatively steady. Contact tracing and isolation is ongoing here, thankfully. A lot of other places have really gotten out of hand, with worse to come.

Edit into a selfish rant: What really pisses me off is that our semi-annual family trip to Arizona is obliterated. One of our favorite places is a hotel in Scottsdale. Some will know where. Bagpipes, evening fires at the edge of a golf course, multiple swimming pools, and water slides that my kid insists I have to go down, year after year. Not to mention the snakes that invade the BBQ stations. Age is a real thing. I'm not doing the surfing simulation anymore like I'm in a Star Trek holodeck. Accelerated water up your butt is not usually a good experience. Or sidewalks that burn your toes to the point of having to find a Quickie Mart that sells sunburn lotion.

Life will be very different from here on out. And I hate it every which way.

On the news this evening, Bob Lutz (Spokane County Health Officer) said he sent out employees to a variety of busy, retail establishments over the weekend and simply monitored the mask usage in Spokane and Spokane Valley.

The Results - Across the city, the average mask usage was 65% - That is not good enough folks.

Hopefully with Inslee's mandate of having to wear masks, we can get the usage up far over 80% in busy retail establishments by this weekend.

Personally, I have seen a significant increase in mask usage this week (since the mandate has gone into effect) in the retail establishments that I have visited with most having employees at the doors making sure you are wearing a mask before entering. However, you still have that group of people who pull their mask down below their chin after they enter the store.
