I hope we aren't Pre-season #1. AND I hope we are not #1 at the beginning of the season. I prefer starting back a ways and working our way up the ladder. I'd like to begin with a rank of about 5, or up to #7. It would give us something to work toward. Being #1 in pre-season isn't all that important to me, and I doubt that it is to Mark Few. What is important is what Few said. The Zags are going to be really really good. What that translates to me is that at some point during the season the Zags will be #1. AND what a team it is going to be. Will we have a 4 who can shoot the 3?

    Go Zags!!!

Great question, thank you for asking. I think the short answer is, "no." I've been thinking a lot about that, as we typically do have a stretch big, whether it's Tillie or Wiltjer or Olynyk. Next year it looks likely that we won't, before *hopefully* bringing in another one for 2021 in Chet Holmgren.

Watson is that stretch 4 for us. With Kispert at the 3 and Watson at the 4, I think you will see Watson have a huge year as a stretch 4.

I was thinking about Watson too, but my memory of him is that he WOULD NOT shoot from the outside, and the person defending him wouldn't come out to guard him, kind of the way they do with guarding Timme or Petro this year.

As of now we have 2 spots for grad transfers (I believe) and perhaps more depending on who leaves in an attempt to play in the NBA. 3 obvious areas of need are if we want to get greedy are (in no particular order):

*Stretch 4 or 5 (to go along with Anton).
*An athletic big with shot blocking presence. We don't have that at all this year and it shows with how many easy layups or drive-kicks we give up. Teams are not afraid to attack us on offense.
*Another shooter in the back court.

The staff is aware of these needs and I am sure they will try and fill accordingly.

I have no clue here, but isn't this Ballo?

I honestly don't think Watson showed much of what he is capable of this year, he was still trying to learn our system then got hurt. I expect huge things from him next year, like bigger jump than Filip this year.

A lot will go into who is returning, but I agree with you on these. I just believe that any grad transfer we get will have to be comfortable coming off the bench. Also, don't rule out one or two of those open spots going to traditional transfers as well.

I know he's not a true 4, but I can see Strawther playing the 4 at times and he can definitely play the stretch role

Next year release the beast Ballo on the rest of college basketball and shock the world . Have Suggs bring his buddy Holmgren a year early. bring back Petrosev , and have a big jump from Pavol. Undefeated season and beat BYU 3 times by an average of 37 points, and send Pope home crying. what a season it could be. Let Haws play for one more year just so we can beat him 3 more times.

I almost forgot another big jump from Kispert, with Strother to back him up and Ayeye back and playing like he does on the french team and Harris to be as good as we suspect he is. Heck we might be able to field 2 top 6 teams next year, and this year isn't even over yet. What a great time to be a Zag fan. All this and I didn't even mention Watson, and Timme.

We certainly hope so! Ballo is big, strong, and could be dominant. I am picturing a run and jump athlete (similar to the Clark model but obviously won't be that good) as something we are lacking. Watson fits the bill somewhat but I am hoping we can find a defensive specialist to play some minutes at the 5.

Lol I had nearly the same thing typed out on a big similar to Clark, we must talk to similar people

The above is the key. No grad transfer is coming to Gonzaga next year with the expectation that they will start. We will be recruiting grads to be specialists and hole-fillers on a very talented roster. For example, a big that can shoot. A 2 guard that can really shoot. A shot blocking center to play a few minutes, etc.

Funny lol but this is just my untrained eye wish list. These are the obvious weaknesses though for an otherwise terrific roster.

Agreed! And my untrained eye sees very similar, but also sees a team that is going to be really good!

Where does Zakharov fit into the equation?

Ballo will shock people when he finally plays. Non stop motor and a superior athlete. Quick, big, nimble, tough... rebounds like a demon.

Assuming he figures things out (he is struggling there right now even in practice) he fits into the equation and will play a large role on the team.

With what we are going to have next year it would be a good year to red-shirt Zakharov, would it not ?

Probably not a bad idea. Reminds me of Ayayi in that way. Didn’t quite figure it out in year 2.

Is anybody able to get in and see practices at all or are they strictly sealed off? I used to watch the Beavers practice when I was a kid, back when they were 1/2 seeds.

That depends. If we don’t add the above mentioned grad transfer big that I am hoping for, then our front court is:
Timme, Ballo, Watson, Zakharov. That front court could be terrific but it clearly lacks experience and depth. Essentially we have Timme and 3 freshman (because Watson and Pavel barely played). So I don’t see a redshirt for Pavel unless we sign another immediately eligible player who can play minutes. All of this changes if somehow Filip returns.

Practice is essentially closed to the public. You would need to know someone or be invited, otherwise you can expect to get booted lol.
