Baseball Falls in Extras to CSUN, 4-3

Machtolf homers, knocks home three in loss

CSUN 4 - Gonzaga 3 Final Box Score Link

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga baseball tied the game in the ninth to force extras, but CSUN had the answer in the 10th to win 4-3 on Friday night at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field.

After leading 2-0 early, Gonzaga (3-9) found itself down 3-2 heading into the ninth and came back to tie the score on a single from Jack Machtolf before the Matadors (9-3) scratched out a run in the 10th.

Gonzaga starter Mac Lardner was solid in his outing, going 6.0 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Michael Spellacy pitched three innings of scoreless relief, and Gabriel Hughes struck out three in the 10th before CSUN got their final run.

On offense, Machtolf led the way with two hits and three RBI, including a homer. Stephen Lund had two hits and scored once, while Tyler Rando reached twice on a hit and a walk to move his on-base streak to 12 games.

Gonzaga got on the board first with Machtolf's first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field to score Lund for a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

CSUN came right back with single runs in the third and fourth to tie the score, and then the Matadors added another in the fifth on a solo homer to take a 3-2 lead.

Gonzaga got more offense from Machtolf to tie it in the ninth inning. With runners on first and second, Machtolf hit a shallow single down the left field line to score pinch runner Alex Brenner from second. GU loaded the bases after a walk from Bristyan, but a hard line drive off the bat of Grayson Sterling was caught in centerfield.

CSUN answered right back in the 10th with a leadoff triple and then a two-out single to go ahead 4-3. Gonzaga put the leadoff runner aboard on an error, but went down in order after that.

Gonzaga and CSUN will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field. Check GoZags.com for links to live coverage.

              Baseball Splits Doubleheader with CSUN

GU took a walk-off win in Game 1, fell late in Game 2

Gonzaga 4 - CSUN 3 Final Box Score Game #1

CSUN 4 - Gonzaga 3 Final Box Score Game #2

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga baseball earned a 4-3 walk-off win in the opener of a doubleheader against CSUN, but fell to the Matadors 4-3 in the nightcap on Saturday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field.

Gonzaga (4-10) came from down a run in the ninth in the first game, but CSUN (10-4) erased a two-run deficit late in the second game to win.

              Game 1 – Gonzaga 4, CSUN 3
Gonzaga got a walk-off single by Jack Machtolf with two outs in the ninth inning to complete a come-from-behind win over the Matadors.

Gonzaga trailed 3-2 entering its final at-bat and put together three hits and a walk to set up Machtolf's game-winner. Ernie Yake singled to start the inning and then scored on a double by Brett Harris. Harris moved to third on a fielder's choice and then Machtolf deposited his game-winning hit.

Starter Alek Jacob went 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts, before giving way to Alec Gomez in the sixth. Gomez was nearly unhittable, pitching a scoreless final 4.0 innings with two strikeouts, a walk and just one hit allowed.

On offense, Yake and Harris led the way with three-hit games, while Anthony Garrett had two in his first-career start.

The Zags put two on in the first inning and Ryan Sullivan knocked home the first with a sacrifice fly. One batter later, Stephen Lund ripped a single to make it 2-0 Zags.

CSUN answered right away in the second with a three-run inning, but Jacob settled in after that and combined with Gomez to keep the Matadors off the board the rest of the way.

              Game 2 – CSUN 4, Gonzaga 3
CSUN took advantage of three Gonzaga errors in the game to score four unearned runs, including two in the final two innings to get the win.

GU took a 3-1 lead into the eighth inning, but a two-out, two-run homer after a GU error tied the game. The Matadors then scored their final unearned run in the ninth after Mason Le reached on an error.

GU starter Nick Trogrlic-Iverson had a fantastic outing, going 8.0 innings and allowing three runs (zero earned) on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks. On offense, Ernie Yake went 2-for-3 with a homer, while reaching base three times.

Gonzaga scored first, getting a solo homer from Stephen Lund to make it 1-0. Meanwhile, Iverson was cruising through four before giving up an unearned run in the fifth.

GU answered to go up 3-1 with another solo homer, this time off the bat of Yake.

Later, Iverson appeared to be out of the inning in the eighth, but an error put a runner on with two outs and CSUN's Denzel Clarke hit a two-run homer to tie it at 3-3.

Gonzaga and CSUN will wrap the four-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. Check GoZags.com for links to live coverage.

Baseball Scores Late for 4-2 Win over CSUN

GU’s bullpen pitched 5.0 scoreless innings of relief

Gonzaga 4 - CSUN 2 Final Box Score Link

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga baseball scored three runs in its final two at-bats and got 5.0 scoreless innings from its bullpen in a 4-2 win over CSUN on Sunday at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field.

The win gave the Zags (5-10) a split in the four-game series with the Matadors (10-5), with both wins in come-from-behind fashion.

Trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Gonzaga scored one in that inning and then two in the eighth while the bullpen continued to keep CSUN off the board. Daniel Naughton came on with one out in the ninth to get the save. His outing, combined with 2.2 scoreless innings from Trystan Vrieling and 1.2 scoreless innings from William Kempner backed up a nice start from Mason Wells.

Wells kept the CSUN bats from getting going in his first start of the season. Wells allowed just two earned runs on two hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Tyler Rando led the offense with three hits, including a single to start an eighth inning in which pinch runner Alex Brenner scored to tie the game. Jack Machtolf reached base twice and knocked in a run.

Gonzaga got on the board first for the fourth straight game against the Matadors with Ryan Sullivan bringing in a run on a fielder's choice.

After CSUN hit a solo homer in the top of the third, GU put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom half, but didn't come up with a hit.

On the mound, Vrieling entered for Wells in the fifth and threw 2.2 innings of shutout work, allowing four hits with one strikeout.

Gonzaga tied it up in the seventh, manufacturing a run with a sacrifice fly from Brett Harris to score Josh Bristyan from third.

Kempner then came on in the seventh and worked out of an inherited runner and put the Matadors down in order in the eighth.

GU then plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth, starting with a bases loaded walk from Jack Machtolf to take the lead. With the bases still loaded two batters later, a fly ball by Bristyan led to Lund getting in a rundown between second and third. That allowed Sullivan to score from third to make it 4-2.

Gonzaga travels to Washington State on Tuesday for the first matchup with the Cougars this season. First pitch is slated for 3:05 p.m. PT. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
