    Season Opening Surprise
    - Gonzaga is opening in Surprise, Arizona, for the fourth straight season.
    - This is the 19th consecutive season the Zags have started the year in a warm-weather climate (since 2002)...they've played 11 season openers in Arizona since 2003, including six of the last seven (2014: Tucson, 2016: Phoenix, 2017-18-19: Surprise).
    - Head coach Mark Machtolf is entering his 17th season at the helm of the program, and his 30th season on the Gonzaga coaching staff overall. He has a career record of 481-387-2.

    GU Picked to Win WCC
    - Gonzaga baseball was once again tabbed the favorite to win the West Coast Conference, while three Zags were named Preseason All-WCC in the league's preseason poll, voted on by the 10 head coaches.
    - Junior righthander Alek Jacob – a 2019 Preseason All-American – headlines three Bulldogs on the 2020 WCC preseason squad. Junior infielder Brett Harris and senior infielder Ernie Yake earned spots and all three earned 2019 All-WCC honors.
    - Gonzaga earned 71 points in the poll with two first-place votes, just three points ahead of BYU, who earned five first-place votes and 68 total points.
    - LMU was third with three first-place votes and 65 total points. Pepperdine and San Diego finished tied for fourth with 52 points.

    Jacob Named Preseason All-American
    - Junior right-hander Alek Jacob was named a Preseason All-American by three different outlets, including a First Team not by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
    - He was named Second Team by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Third Team by Perfect Game.
    - A two-time All-WCC honoree pitched in 25 games with four starts in 2019. He compiled a 7-3 record in 78.2 innings with a 2.17 ERA.
    - Jacob had 12 saves and 87 strikeouts, leading the team in both categories.
    - Jacob follows last season's Preseason All-America nod earned by Casey Legumina. Prior to Legumina, Jeff Bohling was the last Zag to earn Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-America honors in 2016. Marco Gonzales was also a preseason All-American ahead of the 2013 season.

    Returning for 2020
    - RHP Alek Jacob was named to the All-WCC First Team and led a group of six returning players recognized by the league last season.
    - SS Ernie Yake was named to the Second Team and LHP Mac Lardner, 3B Brett Harris and CF Guthrie Morrison were named Honorable Mention.
    - Mason Wells was named to the All-Freshman Team.
    - Jacob, Yake and Harris were all named to the 2020 All-WCC Preseason squad.
    - Jacob ranked 23rd nationally with his 12 saves, but will move into a full-time starting role in 2020.
    - Yake was the third toughest-to-strikeout nationally last season, going down on strikes only once every 17.3 at-bats.
    - Lardner led the squad and was 62nd nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 4.60.

    Strong 2020 Schedule
    - Gonzaga head coach Mark Machtolf has put together another strong schedule with 15 games against NCAA Tournament teams from last season.
    - The non-conference schedule is highlighted by a four-game series on the road against 2019 College World Series participant Arkansas and four total games against last year's regional host and No. 1 seed Oregon State.
    - Three-game sets against Loyola Marymount and Cal, as well as a single mid-week game late in the season at Stanford round out the matchups against some 2019's most successful squads.
    - Machtolf on the schedule: "Our goal every year is to play as competitive of a schedule as we can that will put us in the best position to win the WCC, advance to the NCAA tournament and ultimately make it to Omaha. We feel this non-conference schedule accomplishes that goal on paper, our players will have the opportunity to play in some big-time venues and atmospheres throughout the season. We also look forward to giving our great fans in Spokane 24 opportunities to see us play at Patterson Baseball Complex."

    30 Wins Again in 2019
    - Gonzaga hit the 30-win barrier for the fourth straight season and seventh time in the last nine years in 2019, combined for a 31-24 overall record.
    - During head coach Mark Machtolf's now 16 years at the helm, GU has won at least 30 games 10 times.

    2019 Recap
    - Gonzaga is made its sixth trip to the WCC Tournament in the seven-year history of the four-team format, falling to Saint Mary's a game shy of the championship.
    - GU finished in second in the West Coast Conference with an 18-9 league record.
    - Gonzaga finished ninth nationally in doubles per game at 2.22, led by draftee Troy Johnston's 27 on the year. Returners Guthrie Morrison (13), Ernie Yake (12) and Brett Harris (12) had the next three highest totals.
    - Gone from the 2019 squad are three MLB draftees, including eighth-round selection Casey Legumina, 17th-round pick Troy Johnston and 22nd-rounder Austin Pinorini.

      Baseball Drops Opener to BYU

Lardner threw 6.0 scoreless in no decision

BYU 7 - Gonzaga 1 Final Box Score Link

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Gonzaga baseball gave up six runs in the eighth inning of a tie game to drop its season opener to BYU on Friday night at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz.

Playing West Coast Conference foe BYU (1-0) in a non-conference matchup, the game lived up to the high-level expectations with a tie score through seven innings. But it was the Cougars that opened it up with a six-run eighth without an answer from GU (0-1).

"We had some positive takeaways from the first game, especially encouraged by Mac Lardner," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "The biggest thing for us is bouncing back and getting ready to give Oregon State our best shot tomorrow."

Gonzaga starter Mac Lardner was on top of his game to start the season for the Zags, striking out nine in 6.0 shutout innings to keep the Cougars at bay. He allowed just one hit and walked just two.

Junior Tyler Rando led the way at the plate with two hits in his first game as a Zag, while Mason Marenco, Stephen Lund and Gabriel Hughes each had a single.

Gonzaga's offense was slow to get going against BYU starter Justin Sterner. After the Cougars got a solo homer off of GU reliever Daniel Naughton in the top of the seventh, Gonzaga got going in the bottom of the inning. Three singles led to a run for the Zags with the RBI coming from Mason Marenco to tie it 1-1.

In the eighth, BYU got to the Gonzaga bullpen in a big way, hanging six runs on the board on five hits and three walks.

GU went in order in the eighth and ninth to end the night without a rally.

Gonzaga will face Oregon State on Saturday at 1 p.m. PT/2 p.m. MT in the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz. Links to live coverage are available at GoZags.com.

Baseball Overpowers No. 25 Oregon State, 10-4

Sullivan hit a 3-R HR among four hits

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Gonzaga baseball was unstoppable offensively, pounding out 17 hits in a 10-4 win over No. 25 Oregon State on Saturday at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz.

Senior right fielder Ryan Sullivan led a Gonzaga onslaught with four hits, including a three-run homer, three runs and four RBI. Freshman Gabriel Hughes added four hits, a run and an RBI, and Stephen Lund, Brett Harris and Ernie Yake each had two against the Beavers (1-1).

"We were focused today from the first rep in pregame and it translated throughout," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "Alek Jacob gave us a good start, and we swung the bats as well as I have seen. We are looking forward to another good Northwest battle against the Beavers again tomorrow."

On the mound, the combination of Alek Jacob and Alec Gomez led the way for GU. Jacob went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts, while Gomez went the next 4.0 innings and allowed just one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Freshman William Kempner came on and finished the ninth and allowed no runs on one hit.

Gonzaga got on the board right away, tagging the Beavers for two runs in the first. Two-out RBIs came from Sullivan on a double to score Brett Harris and from Gabriel Hughes to score Sullivan.

Meanwhile, Jacob continued to set down hitters through the first three innings, notching five strikeouts in that span. The junior continued into the fifth, but got into a jam before being relieved by Gomez. The Beavers put up four in the inning with a three-run homer to bring the score to 7-4.

Two innings later, GU answered with the red-hot Sullivan, who deposited an offering over the left-field fence for a three-run homer.

From there, Gomez and Kempner kept the Beavers off the board to finish off the win.

Gonzaga will face Oregon State again on Sunday at Noon PT/1 p.m. MT in the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz. Links to live coverage are available at GoZags.com.

Baseball Downed by Oregon State, 5-1

GU wraps tournament Monday vs. New Mexico

Oregon St 5 - Gonzaga 1 Final Game Box Score

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Gonzaga baseball managed just one run against No. 25 Oregon State on Sunday in a 5-1 loss at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball in Surprise, Ariz.

Gonzaga (1-2) scored first to take a 1-0 lead, but the Beavers (2-1) quickly answered and tacked on some insurance runs in the seventh and eighth. Jack Machtolf had two of Gonzaga's five hits in the game.

"This one was a tough battle that didn't go our way," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "I thought Nick [Trogrlic-Iverson] gave us a good start. Their two arms were a good challenge and learning from games like that should make us tougher to beat going forward."

On the mound, Nick Trogrlic-Iverson got the start, going 4.0 innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. After Mason Wells got an out in relief, three Zags made their college debuts: Jacob Rutherford, Ben Larson and Trystan Vrieling. The trio was solid in the final 3.2 innings, allowing a combined four hits and three runs with four strikeouts and three walks.

In the third, Gonzaga got on the board first for the second straight day against the Beavers, taking a 1-0 lead on a deep sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Rando. OSU was fortunate to get out of the inning with just the one run as GU had the bases loaded with one out.

Oregon State answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third, notching three hits in the inning to take back the lead.

The GU bullpen entered in the fifth and got outs from Wells and Rutherford to get through the inning. Redshirt freshman Ben Larson entered in the sixth with a runner aboard and struck out a pair to get out of the inning.

Vrieling came on for the final 1.2 innings, allowing just a run on two hits with a strikeout and a walk.

Gonzaga will wrap up the tournament in Surprise, Ariz., on Monday morning with a 9 a.m. PT/10 a.m. MT tilt against New Mexico. Links to live coverage are available at GoZags.com.

Baseball Rallies With Three in Ninth to Win 5-4

Gabriel Hughes made collegiate debut with six scoreless IP

Gonzaga 5 - New Mexico 4 Final Game Box Score

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Gonzaga baseball remained resilient after losing a 2-0 lead in the ninth, scoring three in the home half to beat New Mexico 5-4 at the Sanderson Ford College Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz.

The Zags' (2-2) rookie trio of Gabriel Hughes, Reagan Haas and William Kempner kept the Lobo (2-2) bats quiet all game long until UNM got to Kempner in the ninth for four runs. Despite facing the deficit, GU loaded the bases with three walks in the bottom of the ninth before a grounder off the bat of Stephen Lund scored two when UNM's shortstop threw it wide to first. Hustling home on the play was Isaac Barrera from third and Ernie Yake all the way from second for the walk-off win.

"That's not how we would have scripted that one out, but we are happy to leave with a win," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "That kind of resilience will serve us well going forward. We are excited to get back on the diamond this weekend down at Arkansas."...

Check out the short video clip of the Gonzaga game's last play at the Gonzaga Article Link...

Hughes, the starter, went 6.0 innings and allowed just two hits with six strikeouts and three walks in his collegiate debut. On offense, Mason Marenco had a pair of hits, Ryan Sullivan knocked in one with a triple, Yake scored twice and Alex Brenner stole a base and scored.

The GU offense got on the board in the bottom half of Hughes' final inning. Yake led off the inning with a single, but remained at first until Sullivan came to the plate with two outs and delivered an RBI triple for a 1-0 lead.

Gonzaga pushed its lead to 2-0 in the eighth inning when pinch runner Alex Brenner came on for Tyler Rando and executed a perfect double steal with Sullivan to put runners on second and third. Brenner then sprinted home on a wild pitch.

New Mexico would not go away as the Lobos loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth and got a bases-clearing triple to take the lead. UNM added one more on a passed ball for the 4-2 lead.

In the bottom half of the ninth, GU's Marenco and Barrera drew walks to start the inning, and after a strikeout, Yake also reached on a walk. Brett Harris knocked home the first run with a sacrifice fly to set up runners and second and third for Lund's ground ball to shortstop to win it.

Gonzaga hits the road for possibly its toughest opponent of the year at No. 7 Arkansas for four games in three days in Fayetteville, Ark. Check GoZags.com for links to live coverage.

Heartbreak in Arizona; Lobos fall to Gonzaga 5-4

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The highs and lows of a baseball game played out over the course of one inning in the University of New Mexico baseball team's final game of Opening Weekend in Surprise, Ariz. as they took on Gonzaga on Monday afternoon at Surprise Stadium.

In this case, it was the decisive ninth inning that featured all the theatrics and heartbreak. Trailing 2-0, the Lobos (2-2) had the bases loaded, but had two outs and were down to their final strike. Senior second baseman Justin Watari then came up clutch with a bases-clearing triple to right-centerfield to give the Lobos a 3-2 lead. Warati scored a run himself on a passed ball on a walk to Kemuel Thomas-Rivera in the at-bat following, giving the Lobos a 4-2 lead....

Suddenly in the lead, the Lobos went to the bullpen and called upon Miguel Reyes Jr. to potentially close out the game. The Bulldogs drew consecutive walks against Reyes Jr. and prompted the Lobos to go the bullpen once more, this time for Payton Strambler.

Strambler would register a strikeout of the first man he faced then issued a full-count walk to load the bases. The two-run lead was cut in half in the next at-bat as the Bulldogs got a sacrifice fly out to deep left field to make it a 4-3 game. The other two base runners also advanced on the play putting the tying run at third and potential winning run at second.

In the next at-bat, the high of a potential victory turned into the lows of a heartbreaking loss as a throw from the Lobos' shortstop was just up the first base line and pulled Kyle Landers off the bag. As he was coming off the bag to handle the throw, Landers attempted a swipe tag on the runner going by, but safe was the call, and with two outs, the potential winning run was able to score from second, giving the Bulldogs the walk-off win.

Prior to all of the craziness of the ninth inning that saw seven total runs scored, the game was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel that did not see the first run cross the plate until the bottom of the sixth.

Lobo starter Justin Armbruester made his debut and the junior right-hander was solid on the mound as he scattered five hits, did not issue a walk and struck out five in 6.0 innings of work. The lone run surrendered by Armbruester came with two outs in the sixth.
