    Exclamation Selection Committee "First 16" Discussion Thread - 2. 08. 20

    TV: CBS . TIME: 9:30am . ANNOUNCERS: Gumbel, Kellogg, Davis + NCAA MBB Comm Chair, Duke U. AD Kevin White.

    Previews:

    Pat Forde, Sports Illustrated: https://www.si.com/college/2020/02/0...low_twitter_si

    “The number of quality teams that have a legitimate chance to advance to the Final Four and win the national championship is greater than in recent years,” Gavitt said. “In general, you usually have six to eight teams with a chance (to win it all). You can easily double that this year.”

    Which means this: in the eyes of the committee, just about every team they put on the board Saturday could become the national champion.
    This is the fourth season the NCAA has done the early look at the tourney seeding, and it has largely held up come Selection Sunday. In 2017, 15 of the 16 teams retained their top-four seeding. In 2018 it was 13 of 16, and last year it was 11 of 16.

    Kansas with the overall #2?

    They put Gonzaga as the #1 in the West.

    We win out, I think we keep it.

    If we drop 1 we may keep the 1 seed (They said there was a big gap between 4 and 5), but I think San Diego State overtakes us for the West.

    Why wouldn't they get their closest site being the overall #5?

    They have a billion alums in the area, play games every year there — the Garden and Barclay. Just saying they’re wired. Why not the south?

    Because protected seeds get their closest geographical site.

    Our 8/9 matchup would be Winner of Houston and Michigan, which of course it can't be because you can't have rematches in the second round. So I'm guessing, Palm originally had San Diego as the #1 in the west when he put his bracket together.

    Dodo Seth just conceded enormous advantage Koach would have in NYC vs SDSU, a true road game for Tecs.

    Reactions coming out via social media and MSM websites:

    Jeff Goodman
    @GoodmanHoops
    The NCAA tournament committee should place more emphasis than usual on conference tourneys this year due to the minimal disparity between resumes. Would make Championship Week into complete mayhem!!!

    Jim Meehan
    @SRJimm
    Duke AD and selection committee chair Kevin White on GU/SDSU seeding: “It’s such a fine line. I think at the end of the day across the 10-member committee it was the fact that the Zags have two really good wins, maybe better wins, over Arizona and Oregon."

    Slipper Still Fits: https://www.slipperstillfits.com/202...source=twitter

    Obviously, the biggest thing here is that Gonzaga was placed ahead of San Diego State. As of now, both teams are clearly number one seeds. Most experts had pinned the Aztecs ahead of the Zags in recent days, but the committee saw otherwise. Considering Gonzaga has, in all likelihood, three more quadrant one opportunities and San Diego State may only have one, there’s reason to believe the Bulldogs will be the top seed in the West if they win out.

    #1 seed in West is officially Zags’ to lose. Great incentive to stay locked in and amped up for every game.

    Gonzaga can’t count on SDSU to lose. If the Zags want to play in the Staples Center, instead of Madison Square Garden, they need to win out.

    I don't see any way the national champs this year aren't Baylor, Duke or Kansas. I've thought it for a while and now they are 1-2-3 on Kenpom.

    Nobody else close to balanced enough. Zags' defense and depth will be insurmountable (as far as winning 6 games in a row) but I do look forward to a great postseason and enjoying the rest of the regular season.

    If anyone out there thinks anyone other than Baylor/Duke/Kansas can win a national championship, I'd love to hear reasons. It would possibly help sway me to believe more in the Zags!
