That was a quote from a WCC assistant coach, so they better be familiar with WCC hoops.

[QUOTE=TexasZagFan;1478300]SMC will be in trouble when another school makes inroads in Australia. Seems like they've gotten the lion's share of Australian talent for a decade.

Pretty much dead wrong. There was a brief time, circa 2007-2009, when SMC was the premier US destination for Aussie talent. We signed the number one rated Assuie recruit in 2007 (Patty Mills), 2008 (oddly enough, Clint Steindl - who is now married to a former Zags women’s player), and 2009 (Dellavedova).

I remember Bennett being asked how he continued to sign the #1 Aussie, and him responding: “In Australia, they don’t know the difference between Duke and Saint Mary’s and I don’t tell them.”

But those days are long gone, and the big boys have been poaching Australian talent for the last decade. We are still in play for top ten or even top 5 guys, but we no longer get the elite of the elite. That’s been the case for years. Bennett now gets underrated recruits even by Australian standards - Naar was considered to small / slow and had no D1 offers while Jock Landale was an overweight kid who literally did not play high school basketball.

Have a look at the below list - most if not all of these guys were heavily recruited by SMC but to no avail.

    Current NCAA Players:

    Isaac White (Stanford)
    Jack White (Duke)
    Dejan Vaselijic (Miami)
    Deng Gak (Miami)
    Josh Green (Arizona)

Recent (ish) NCAA Players / Recruits:
    Jonah Bolden (UCLA)
    Isaac Humphries (Kentucky)
Dante Exum (straight to NBA, would have committed to Indiana by all accounts)
    Matur Maker (Dayton)
    William McDowell White (Fresno St)
    Tom Wilson (SMU)
    Ben Simmons (LSU)
    Harry Froling (Marquette)

Coach Bennett is a great recruiter. He doesn’t win a lot of recruiting battles against the blue blood programs, but he finds excellent players that those programs overlook. He finds tough, smart gym rats who shoot and pass as well as any players in the country. Gael recruits remind me of the kids Gonzaga used to recruit during the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Yeah, what LIzF said, and the roads to and from Malibu make it seem even further away.

LMU is in by far the best position to challenge the GU, SMC, BYU hegemony long term. It is in that great location with tons of local talent. It is also one of the best academic schools in the conference, one of the oldest, and very wealthy. Strange that they've languished so long.

Agree. LMU's gym and facilities suck though. Would love to see them invest and be able to recruit local and SoCal recruits who are good enough to have the option to either take a backup position on a Pac 12 team or a starting position at LMU. USD and SCU should also be contenders... Would love to see all these schools up their game. If that happens, and the WCC improves, Pepp and Portland will follow.. accepting Pacific to the league... Awful decision. Awful.
