Baseball’s Legumina Selected in 8th Round of MLB Draft

GU has had a draftee in the 8th round or higher in five straight years

SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga pitcher Casey Legumina was drafted in the eighth round by the Minnesota Twins in the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday afternoon.

The 239th overall pick, Legumina was the first Gonzaga player drafted this year as 10 rounds are complete through Tuesday. Rounds 11-40 will take place on Wednesday beginning at 9 a.m. PT/12 a.m. ET on MLB.com.

Legumina, a native of Chandler, Arizona, completed his junior season with the Zags in 2019, going 1-0 in four starts with a 1.50 earned-run average before missing the remainder of the season. A preseason All-American, Legumina entered the year after a standout sophomore season as the team's closer, saving a school-record 13 games and compiling a 2.77 ERA in 26 appearances. For his career, he struck out 117 batters in 130.1 career innings, while walking just 31.

The right-hander was selected in the 35th round by the Cleveland Indians in the 2018 MLB Draft, but chose to return to Gonzaga for his junior season.

Legumina becomes the 14th player drafted in the top 10 rounds in the last 10 seasons, and his eighth-round selection marks the fifth straight season GU has had a draftee in the first eight rounds.

Two More Selected on MLB Draft Final Day

Johnston taken in 17th round, Pinorini in 22nd round

SPOKANE, Wash. – Two more Gonzaga baseball players were selected on the final day of the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday afternoon.

Outfielder Troy Johnston was taken by the Miami Marlins in the 17th round with the 501st overall selection, and catcher Austin Pinorini was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 22nd round with the 670th overall pick.

Along with pitcher Casey Legumina's selection on Tuesday in the eighth round, Gonzaga's total of three draftees marks the fifth consecutive year with at least three draftees.

Johnston, a junior from Puyallup, Wash., had a breakout junior season at the plate, hitting a team-best .330 with team-highs of 10 homers, 27 doubles, 72 hits and 133 total bases. His 27 doubles tied a school record, and he added 43 runs and 46 RBI, both second on the team. Johnston was named to the All-WCC First Team.

Pinorini, who handled the GU pitching staff behind the plate, had a solid season, hitting .270 with 34 RBI and 16 doubles, good for second on the team. The Everett, Wash., native was third on the team with 19 extra-base hits and fourth on the team with 57 overall hits. Pinorini also reached base a team-best 35 times via either a walk or hit-by pitch.

    The 40-round draft concluded Wednesday.
