    From the Wizards' twitter feed:

Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich on Rui Hachimura: "He’s a skilled player. He’s an unselfish player...He’s already very difficult now but he is going to be something else. Great competitor.”

It was a wild game that went back and forth at the end. Rui is fun to watch!

Rui raking in the endorsement deals.

On top of his $4.5 million playing salary, Forbes estimates Hachimura’s off-court earnings could reach $10 million this season, second to Zion Williamson among rookies and within the top 12 of all NBA players. The rest of the rookie class is not in the same zip code as Zion and Rui.

Fantastic story touching on Rui and his relationship with Jordan brand and such:

Because of Hachimura's status as a national icon, there was a unique competition to land him as a sneaker endorser. It was a process that began long before Hachimura walked across the stage at Barclays Center on draft night, and it's one he took seriously.

"I was looking for a unique and special partnership that was true to my background," Hachimura said.

Initially, seven companies presented to Hachimura, including basketball staples like Nike subsidiary Jordan Brand and multiple China-based companies. But, because of Hachimura's background, that group also included a pair of basketball outsiders.
    ---
However, Hachimura decided to sign with Jordan Brand, which offered a blend of proven performance products, marketing ability around the world and an opportunity to join a smaller stable of players within the larger Nike umbrella.

Rui Hachimura said of his decision to sign with Jordan Brand, "They had a very good plan for me in Japan and internationally." Courtesy Jordan Brand
"They were making him the first and only Japanese Jordan athlete," Ranne said. "They were focused on making him a global ambassador, and not just a Japan or North America ambassador."

They also had an ace in the hole: Michael Jordan himself.

In addition to highlighting the company's upcoming designs, innovations and marketing ideas in store for Hachimura during their May 10 pitch meeting, the Jordan team pulled out a mid-presentation surprise. "The Boss" was calling in to personally express his desire for Hachimura to join his Jordan Brand family.

    Default Rui

    Today’s Washington Post.

Whenever Rui Hachimura walks onto the court for pregame warmups, the Washington Wizards rookie typically takes a seat next to player development coach David Adkins. Rookie Season 101 begins another session, just one class in an 82-game stretch.
“I’m a rookie, so I don’t know anybody [on opposing teams],” said Hachimura, the ninth pick in June’s draft, before making his 14th consecutive start Sunday night against the Sacramento Kings.
Hachimura’s first weeks in the NBA have been peppered with lessons, from studying opponents’ tendencies via video on Adkins’s laptop to remaining on the sideline in the fourth quarter of close games.

While Hachimura ranks in the top 10 in scoring and minutes among rookies, he is experiencing his share of up-and-down moments.
In Sunday’s 113-106 loss to the Kings, Hachimura got off to a strong start by drawing contact, shooting confidently and recognizing a mismatch, scoring seven points in the opening quarter.

But the 21-year-old played only 12 more minutes the rest of the game and sat the entire fourth quarter. He didn’t score again and finished with four rebounds.

Quote from Wizards head coach Scott Brooks about Rui following their upset 119-113 W vs 76’ers last night in which Rui was leading scorer w 27pts on 11-18 shooting.

“He’s like a seven or eight-year vet,” Brooks said. “He just chips away at the game every time. That guy, he’s a winner. He just plays the right way.”
