Baseballís Fredrickson, Spellacy Named All-Academic

Five total Zags recognized for academic and athletics by WCC

SAN BRUNO, Calif. Ė Gonzaga baseball was led by Daniel Fredrickson and Michael Spellacy on the WCC All-Academic Team, announced Wednesday by the West Coast Conference.

Fredrickson, a senior who was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, earned his third straight honor from the league, while Spellacy, a sophomore, is being recognized for the first time in his career. Also recognized on the honorable mention was seniors Justin Blatner and Austin Pinorini and redshirt junior Trent Schulte.

Fredrickson, a native of Woodinville, Wash., has maintained a 3.85 grade-point average and graduated this month with a degree in mechanical engineering. On the field, he's also had a fantastic season, hitting .293 in 43 games played with nine doubles, two triples and a walk-off home run on the year.

Spellacy, who maintains a 3.96 GPA in psychology and philosophy, was one of just three sophomores on the 13-member all-academic team. A right-handed pitcher, he has appeared in 16 games with three starts on the year and is 2-1 with a 4.57 earned-run average.

Blatner, Pinorini and Schulte have all been major contributors to Gonzaga's 30-win season. Blatner, who has a 3.66 GPA and is in the Master's of Organizational Leadership program, has 11 appearances with nine starts on the mound and is fifth in strikeouts with 37. Pinorini has done the bulk of the team's catching this season and has maintained a 3.59 GPA while earning his degree in business administration. He's hitting .279 and is second the team in doubles with 16 and third in RBI with 34. Schulte, a left-handed reliever, has a 3.43 GPA in business administration and has made 19 appearances on the year with a win, two saves and a 3.92 GPA.

Gonzaga begins action as the No. 2 seed at the WCC Tournament on Thursday, taking on No. 3-seeded Saint Mary's in the opening round at 7 p.m. in Stockton, Calif.
