    Baseball’s Johnston, Jacob Earn All-WCC First Team

    Eight Zags honored on All-WCC teams


    SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Gonzaga baseball was well-represented on the All-WCC teams, led by First Team selections Troy Johnston and Alek Jacob, league officials announced Tuesday afternoon.

    Along with Johnston and Jacob among the league's 13 best on the First Team, Nick Nyquist and Ernie Yake were named the Second Team. A trio of Zags earned honorable mention, including Mac Lardner, Brett Harris, and Guthrie Morrison, while Mason Wells was named to the All-Freshman Team.

    Johnston, the team's right fielder, leads the squad in hitting at .327 and extra-base hits with 37, including 26 doubles and nine home runs. He's second on the team in RBI at 44 on the year, while scoring the third-most runs at 39.

    Jacob has been GU's do-it-all pitcher, going 5-1 with seven saves and a 1.60 earned-run average in league play, and 7-3 with 11 saves overall on the year. The Spokane native has held opposing hitters to a .202 batting average on the year.

    Nyquist turned in a spectacular senior season with a team-best 10 homers and 51 RBI with a .317 batting average on the year. Yake hit .305 on year with 29 RBI and 40 runs scored, good for second on the team.

    Harris and Morrison each hit over .300 on the year with Harris at .302, including a .353 average against WCC opponents. Morrison hit .315 on the year and was third on the team with 13 doubles. Lardner was one of the best one the mound, going 4-1 against the WCC with a 4.04 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 44.1 innings. Wells earned two wins in league play and went the distance twice in his eight starts.

    Gonzaga begins action as the No. 2 seed at the WCC Tournament on Thursday, taking on No. 3-seeded Saint Mary's in the opening round at 7 p.m. in Stockton, Calif.
