Default Women’s Basketball to Play in Gulf Coast Showcase

The Lady Zags OOC schedule is beginning to come into focus. The Lady Zags will play in the Gulf Coast Showcase over Thanksgiving Weekend in Estero, Florida. The 8-team field includes five (5) teams that made the NCAA tournament this year, a historically mid-major powerhouse (Dayton) and a representative from the Big-10 (Purdue). Looks like a challenging field for the Zags.

Here is the information from GoZags.com:

ESTERO, Fla. – The Gonzaga women's basketball team will play in the 2019 Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla. The three-day tournament takes place Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at the 8,284-seat Hertz Arena.

The tournament field includes eight teams and will feature four games a day over the three-day event. The 2019 field features six teams that won at least 20 games during the 2018-19 season and five teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament; both Gonzaga and Arizona State advanced past the first round of the NCAA Tournament while Auburn, Drake and Maine each fell in the first round. The full bracket, along with first-round matchups, will be released at a later date.

"We are looking forward to bringing our team to the Gulf Coast Showcase," head women's basketball coach Lisa Fortier said. "It's always great to play in a tournament of this caliber and to test ourselves early in the season."

This will be Gonzaga's first trip to the Gulf Coast Showcase since its inception in 2013, while Arizona State, Dayton, Maine, Middle Tennessee and Purdue have each played in the tournament previously. The tournament field features three potential first-time opponents for the Zags in Auburn, Drake and Maine. The full list of teams is as follows:

    Arizona State – 22-11, 10-7 (5th in Pac-12 Conference) / NCAA Tournament
    Auburn – 22-10, 9-7 (T-6th in Southeastern Conference) / NCAA Tournament
    Drake – 27-7, 17-1 (1st in Missouri Valley Conference) / NCAA Tournament
    Gonzaga – 29-5, 16-2 (1st in West Coast Conference) / NCAA Tournament
    Maine – 25-8, 15-1 (1st in America East Conference) / NCAA Tournament
    Middle Tennessee – 23-11, 11-5 (T-3rd in Conference USA)
    Dayton – 17-14, 10-6 (T-4th in Atlantic 10 Conference)
    Purdue – 19-15 overall

Gonzaga is coming off one a record-breaking season that saw the Zags reach new heights, earning a program-best No. 12 ranking in the Associated Press and as well as a program-record No. 11 ranking in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in program history, earning a program-best No. 5 seed.

In addition to the women's tournament, the Gulf Coast Showcase also features a men's tournament Nov. 25-27 that will feature Drake, Wright State, Northeastern, Weber State, Miami (OH), South Alabama and an additional two teams yet to be announced.

From the Gulf Coast Showcase web site:

The women’s tournament, played on Nov. 29-Dec. 1 with four games each day as well, features six teams that won 20+ games and five teams that competed in the NCAA Tournament. Arizona State advanced to the Sweet 16 while Gonzaga narrowly fell to Oregon State in the Round of 32. ASU, Dayton, Maine, Middle Tennessee and Purdue have all played in the Gulf Coast Showcase since its inception in 2013. The full field of the women’s tournament features:

    Arizona State – 22-11, 10-7 (5th in Pac-12 Conference) / NCAA Tournament
    Auburn – 22-10, 9-7 (T-6th in Southeastern Conference) / NCAA Tournament
    Drake – 27-7, 17-1 (1st in Missouri Valley Conference) / NCAA Tournament
    Gonzaga – 29-5, 16-2 (1st in West Coast Conference) / NCAA Tournament
    Maine – 25-8, 15-1 (1st in America East Conference) / NCAA Tournament
    Middle Tennessee – 23-11, 11-5 (T-3rd in Conference USA)
    Dayton – 17-14, 10-6 (T-4th in Atlantic 10 Conference)
    Purdue – 19-15 overall

“The fact that five teams in the women’s field has played here before tells you what college basketball thinks of the Gulf Coast Showcase,” said Women’s Tournament Director and ESPN analyst Debbie Antonelli. “We set out to create the best women’s tournament in the country, and once again, this eight-team field highlights the best the sport has to offer. And, this year’s field is as wide-open as any since the tournament’s inception.”

For the fifth consecutive year, the tournament will support the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The hospital is the only children’s hospital between Tampa and Miami and provides vital health care for the region’s sick and injured children and their families. The hospital’s new $242 million facility provides 300,000 square feet of space, 128 pediatric and NICU beds with space to expand to 160 beds, a 17-bay emergency department, a freestanding pediatric pharmacy and in-hospital school classroom.

Have the Zags run into Arizona St. in years gone by? ASU lost quite a bit to graduation but they always play physical defense and are one of those teams that aren't much fun to play against. Could be an interesting matchup if they face off in this tourney.

Drake has been on a solid run for at least the last 3 years.

I am sure we have not played ASU in at least the last 7 years and maybe never. WSU and Stanford have had no trouble playing home and home series with the lady zags, the rest of the Pac-12 has not been as agreeable. I also do not know how hard Gonzaga has tried to play other Pac-12 teams. I would have thought KG and the Ducks would have been willing to set up a home and home series if asked.

Any time the Lady Zags play in a tournament that they may get a chance to play one or more P-5 conference teams, it simply adds to our resume and I am all for it. Drake, as a mid-major, has had a very good run the last 3 years. Dayton has historically been a very good mid-major program but not so much last year. With 5 of the 8 teams in the NCAA tournament last year, it is a pretty good field. I would like to have seen more P-5 conference teams, but this line-up is pretty good.
