Baseball’s Johnston Named WCC Player of the Week

Outfielder earns honor for second time in three weeks

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga outfielder Troy Johnston was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week after his five-homer performance in four GU wins, league officials announced Monday. The award is Johnston's second in the last three weeks.

Johnston had a career week, going 10-for-17 (.588) with five home runs, 12 RBI and nine runs scored. In GU's Tuesday win over Washington State, he went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI, but his week was just getting started. In the first game of a three-game sweep over San Francisco, Johnston went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double, five RBI and three runs scored as GU posted a 15-8 win.

One day later, it was a nearly identical line with two more homers, another double, five more RBI and three more runs scored as GU won 14-3. On Sunday, Johnston reached base twice on a hit and a hit-by pitch and scored once in a 14-3 Gonzaga victory.

For the week, he had a slugging percentage of 1.588, on-base percentage of .611 and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on nine chances in right field.

Gonzaga will hit the road for a midweek game on Tuesday at No. 2 Oregon State at 5:35 p.m. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
