Zags Place Fifth at Penn Relays

Men’s 4xMile team has solid finish on big stage

PHILADELPHIA — Gonzaga's quartet of Mason Villarma, Yacine Guermali, Scott Kopczynski and Brandon Pollard came in fifth place at the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field Saturday.

The Zag foursome exceeded expectations as they were seeded 11th in the 13-team race, and finished in fifth with a time of 16:45.89.

Villarma opened the race running the first leg at 4:11.7. Guermali followed with the fastest mile at 4:09.6. Kopczynski's time was 4:10.9, and Pollard's anchor leg was 4:13.7.

Wisconsin won the event at 16:39.82, followed by Indiana (16:39.86) and Georgetown (16:40.63).

The GU men will send a select group of runners to the Payton Jordan Invitational Thursday in Stanford, Calif. Live video via FloTrack, along with live results, will be available on GoZags.com.

XC (and limited track) has come a long way since they got the Mead coach, and also the wise (but overdue) decision to make the coaching job full-time.

Excited to see where things stand in a couple years. Anyone know how many scholarships the team provides? That was always part of the challenge (they didn’t even offer a single full scholarship not too many years ago).

Things have certainly changed since I laced up.
