    - Wells went 7.0 innings at Portland last weekend, allowing just two runs on four hits with four strikeouts, to earn his first collegiate win.

Jacob on NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List
    - Alek Jacob was one of 45 players nationally named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Watch List.
    - Starting out the year as a starter, but converting to the closer due to need, he has racked up eight saves, leads the team with five wins, and has 60 strikeouts in 54.2 innings pitched.
    - The sophomore stepped back into the starting role against Santa Clara over the weekend and went 5.0 innings, earning a win.
    - Jacob is holding opposing hitters to a .188 batting average and has a 1.65 ERA on the year.

Zags Take Two of Three at Santa Clara
    - Gonzaga dropped the opener 4-0 at Santa Clara, but bounced back to take the next two games and win the road series.
    - Nick Nyquist had a huge second game, going 3-for-5 with a double, triple, home run and five RBI.

    - In March, Gonzaga took down last year's College World Series participant Washington in a single-game midweek contest, 5-4. The Zags got out to leads of 3-0 and 4-3, before breaking a four-all tie in the bottom of the eighth. Ernie Yake knocked home Brett Harris with a hard-hit ball to the first baseman's left for the deciding run. Michael Spellacy came out in the ninth and went 1-2-3 for his first career save.

    Harris Breaks Out

    - Harris' biggest game came in the series finale against San Diego with two doubles, four RBI and two walks. He got the Gonzaga rally started in the ninth inning with the team down by three when he ripped a two-run double to left, and GU went on to win in walk-off fashion.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga baseball got two home runs from Troy Johnston and 17 total hits from the offense in a 15-8 win over San Francisco on Friday night in Spokane, Wash.

Gonzaga (21-17, 13-6) got the offense going early and often, taking a 6-2 lead into a sixth inning where they added six more runs to break the game open against the Dons (24-18, 12-7). Johnston had four hits and five RBI to go along with his two homers, while Guthrie Morrison also had five hits, two RBI and two runs scored, and Daniel Fredrickson had three hits and three runs scored.

On the mound, Mason Wells got the win, going 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Nick Trogrlic-Iverson and Trent Schulte each threw a scoreless inning in the victory.

Johnston got his huge day started with a solo home run in the first, and Isaac Barrera added an RBI single in the second to tie the score at 2-2. After a scoreless third, GU got three in the fourth on an RBI triple from Fredrickson and a two-RBI single from Morrison for a 5-2 lead.

Then in the sixth, Johnston doubled two more home as part of a five-hit, six-run inning that was capped by a two-RBI single from Josh Bristyan.

GU's 12-3 lead turned into a 14-3 when Johnston hit his second homer of the day in the seventh inning and put the Zags comfortably ahead. USF mounted a rally with five runs in the eighth, but GU scored one more on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Slade Heggen for the final score.

Baseball Rolls to 14-3 Win Over USF

Johnston had two-HR, five-RBI in second straight game

Gonzaga 14 - USF 3 Final Box Score Link

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga offense picked up right where it left off last night's game, racking up 20 hits, including four homers, in a 14-3 rout of San Francisco on Saturday night in Spokane, Wash.

All four of Gonzaga's homers were of the two-run variety, with Troy Johnston hitting two, Mason Marenco hitting the first homer of his career and Nick Nyquist hitting his team-leading ninth of the year. The GU (22-17, 14-6) onslaught started with six runs in the first inning after opening the game with five straight hits against the Dons (24-19, 12-8).

"We did a good job against both of their starters, and that's the key," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We really put them behind the eight-ball with that six-spot in the first inning. Our guys are starting to learn that every inning is important in a three-game series, and we gave ourselves the opportunity to save some of our pitching by continuing to put up runs."

On the mound, Mac Lardner was effective, going 8.0 innings and allowing seven hits and three runs with eight strikeouts and two walks. Daniel Naughton finished a perfect final inning with two strikeouts.

Johnston's two-homer, five-RBI day was his second in a row. He had three hits in the game and scored three times. Brett Harris had four hits with two doubles, two runs and an RBI, and both Guthrie Morrison and Marenco each had three hits. Marenco totaled four RBI with a run scored.

In the first inning, GU posted six hits and scored six runs, getting a RBI doubles from Johnston and Harris, and a two-RBI single from Marenco.

After a scoreless second and third, the string of two-run homers started with Johnston's first of the day in the fourth. Marenco hit one in the fifth, and then Johnston and Nyquist capped the scoring with one each in the sixth.

Gonzaga and San Francisco will wrap up the series on Sunday at Noon in Spokane, Wash. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.

Sweep Complete! Baseball Beats USF 12-3 in Series Finale

GU scored 12 or more runs in all 3 games of sweep

Gonzaga 12 - San Francisco 3 Final Box Score Link

SPOKANE, Wash. — For the third straight day, Gonzaga baseball's offense came through with a monster day in a 12-3 win and series sweep over San Francisco on Sunday afternoon.

Gonzaga (23-17, 15-6) posted 12 or more runs in each of the three games and at least 15 hits in all three to knock the Dons (24-20, 12-9) out of the top spot in the WCC standings.

"It's a huge statement weekend, and for us to set ourselves up to play some meaningful games in May, it's really excited," assistant coach Brandon Harmon said. "It's contagious right now, and I think they are really celebrating each other's successes. We have guys that are maybe not doing things that show up in the box score, but they are really impacting what this team is doing. That's really the fabric of who we are."

Gonzaga starter Justin Blatner pitched well in his 4.0-plus innings, allowing just one run on three hits with four strikeouts and zero walks. Reliever Alek Jacob entered with one on in the fifth inning and went the distance to get his team-leading sixth win. He threw 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout and a walk.

On offense, Austin Pinorini and Nick Nyquist each had three RBI, while Mason Marenco drove in four on a grand slam. Nyquist had three hits in the game, while Pinorini, Marenco and Josh Bristyan each had two.

For the third straight day, Gonzaga jumped on the board early with three runs in first inning. Pinorini got his big day started with an RBI single for the first run and Nyquist then followed with a single of his own to score two more for a 3-0 lead.

USF got on in the second inning, but the game went scoreless until GU came to the plate in the fifth and posted five runs on six hits. Pinorini and Nyquist did more damage with the former knocking home two on a triple and the later knocking home one on a single. Josh Bristyan capped the inning with an RBI single up the middle.

Marenco then came to the plate with the bases loaded in the eighth and smashed his second home run of the weekend and first-career grand slam to left field to make it 12-3.

Gonzaga will hit the road for a midweek game on Tuesday at No. 2 Oregon State at 5:35 p.m. Links to live coverage will be available at GoZags.com.
