Stiles leaving Missouri St. to join Oklahoma staff

Missouri State women's basketball icon Jackie Stiles is leaving the school to become an assistant coach at Oklahoma.

Oklahoma announced Wednesday that head coach Sherri Coale hired Stiles, who was on the Missouri State coaching staff for six seasons under former coach Kellie Harper. The Springfield (Mo.) News-Leader reports that Stiles is leaving as Amaka Agugua-Hamilton replaces Harper as Missouri State's head coach. Harper took the Tennessee job on April 9.

Missouri State athletic director Kyle Moats declined to say whether Stiles was considered for the head-coaching job.

Stiles, 40, held the NCAA Division I women's career scoring record with 3,393 points until she was surpassed by Washington's Kelsey Plum in 2017. Stiles led the Lady Bears to the 2001 NCAA Final Four and was the school's first player drafted into the WNBA.

She is undergoing treatment for eye cancer, which was diagnosed in December 2017.

Perfectly understandable. Why stay as an assistant for a mid-major college when that college has already passed you over for the head coaching position when you can move up to a P-5 assistant coaching position. A big step up the coaching later for Jackie Stiles with a significant increase in pay. A significant loss for Missouri State.

Interesting move. Oklahoma has gone downhill fast and Coale is probably on the hot seat. Stiles may not be there long if the HC is dismissed. OU keeps losing their best players to transfer, pretty hard to rebuild that way.

very disappointed probably that she wasn't chosen as head coach....she's put in her time.....but also, was she not even asked about coming along with Harper?

and its not like MSU was looking for head coaching exp....they chose an assistant from another school...

Good luck Jackie Stiles........hope Ok has a great season.....

I forgot OU recently added former Penn St. head coach Coquese Washington to their staff. She was HC for 12 years before being let going following this season. So I think if Stiles was considered the top assistant at Missouri St., she won't be in the same role at OU.
