As mentioned several weeks ago on this board, this hire comes as no surprise. He was the leading candidate. Because of the requirement that the coach be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, BYU's search is very narrow.
His first job, beyond getting some good players into the program, is to learn how to beat Randy Bennett and St. Mary's. There is too much of an obsession with Gonzaga, and it's led to the Cougars actually having a worse record (I believe) vs. the Gaels than they do against the Zags since they joined the WCC.
WCC has humbled BYU basketball. it needed it imo, we'll see if Pope can adjust to it
Beast of luck to him...Maybe Coach Pope can instill a mindset where defence is a priority...
I suspect Pope is going to be a winner there. Don’t sleep on him.
I have to admit, "Coach Pope" has a nice ring to it![]()
Or to put it another way, "Pope is in charge of BYU basketball" or a couple more; "BYU hires Pope", "BYU looks to guidance from Pope", "Pope in charge at BYU". The possibilities are endless.

BYU, Seeking Miracle (Winning WCC), Looks to Pope for Answer.
I watched his press conference and I have to say I am impressed.
He wants the bar to be high. He embraces the high expectation level.
He has praise for Gonzaga and Mark Few, but his focus is internal.
He wants players that want to be there.
He wants a loyal staff that works relentlessly.
I think he is the best possible hire for BYU's narrow, specialized set of requirements. Won a national championship as a player. Played in the NBA. Assistant coach in the NBA. Assistant coach at BYU. Successful in his first attempt as a head coach. The resume is solid.
I wish him good fortune and a long career.
I miss Mike Hart
