Back in the Pac-12 Win Column
    - This week, Gonzaga took down last year's College World Series participant Washington in a single-game midweek contest, 5-4. The Zags got out to leads of 3-0 and 4-3, before breaking a four-all tie in the bottom of the eighth.
    - Ernie Yake knocked home Brett Harris with a hard-hit ball to the first baseman's left for the deciding run. Michael Spellacy came out in the ninth and went 1-2-3 for his first career save.
    - Freshman Daniel Naughton started the game, his first college action, and pitched 2.0 perfect innings with two strikeouts.
    - Yake and Harris each had three hits for the Zags.

    Series Salvaged
    - Gonzaga found itself down two games in the three-game set at Pepperdine and down 2-1, three outs away from being swept on Sunday. But, the Zags scored two runs and slammed the door to beat Pepperdine 3-2.
    - Alek Jacob was named the WCC Pitcher of the Week for his work in the Sunday victory. He entered the game in relief with no outs in the second inning, and proceeded to pitch the next 8.0 innings scoreless, allowing just two hits and striking out six while walking just two batters in the win. In the outing, held opposing hitters to just a .091 batting average. Gonzaga won the game with a two-out, two-run single in the ninth inning by Troy Johnston.
    - For the series, Johnston hit .385 (5-for-13) with a team-high three RBI and one double.

Zags Go 2-1 to Open WCC
    - Gonzaga started the West Coast Conference season with a pair of wins in a three-game set at BYU. In series originally scheduled for Spokane, but moved due to late winter weather, Gonzaga still found a way to win the bookends by similar scores of 4-2.
    - Gonzaga closer Alek Jacob had an outstanding week out of the bullpen, pitching in all three of Gonzaga's wins as the Zags went 3-1 on the road. He collected two saves and one win, pitching 8.0 total innings, allowing zero earned runs (1 unearned) and just three hits, while striking out 10.
    - Ernie Yake hit .474 (9-for-19) with six extra-base hits (5 2B, 1 3B) to help Gonzaga go 3-1 in four road games. On Thursday in the WCC opener at BYU, Yake tied the score in the fifth with an RBI, then knocked home a pair of runs with a double in the 11th inning to break a two-all tie and propel GU to the win.
    - Yake led off three of the four games in the week with an extra-base hit...

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga baseball battled back to tie the score late, but San Diego came up with the timely offense to win 4-2 in a 12-inning affair at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field.

After Gonzaga (10-12, 3-4) tied the score at 2-2 in the eighth inning, San Diego (18-8, 4-3) mustered two runs in the 12th for the series-opening win.

Gonzaga was solid on the mound, getting a quality start from Mason Wells with 6.2 innings of work. He allowed just two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks. Taylor Davis threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, and Alek Jacob threw the final 4.0 innings. Jacob pitched well, but took the loss despite giving up just two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

The top three spots in the GU lineup reached base a combined 10 times in the game with eight walks and two hits. Ernie Yake and Guthrie Morrison each earned three walks. Brett Harris and Austin Pinorini each had a hit and an RBI in the game.

The Toreros got on the board first with two runs in the fourth inning and held the Gonzaga offense scoreless until the eighth. USD starter Chris Murphy left the game after seven scoreless innings, and GU got to the bullpen.

Gonzaga drew three walks to start the inning, loading the bases with nobody out. After a strikeout, Austin Pinorini brought home one on a groundout and then Brett Harris hit an infield single to tie the score.

GU threatened again in the ninth, leaving two on base, and again in the 11th, leaving the bases loaded.

It was San Diego that came up with the clutch two-out hit to score two runs in the top of the 12th.

The Zags and Toreros will be back on the field on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the second game of a three-game series. Check GoZags.com for available links to live coverage.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga baseball put up 10 runs between the fifth and sixth innings on the way to a 15-3 win over San Diego on Saturday night at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field.

Already leading 5-3 in the sixth, Gonzaga batted around and scored six runs in the inning before scoring four more in the seventh to take a big lead.

"This was a great team response after a disappointing outcome on Friday night," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We are looking forward to a huge Sunday battle."

The Zags got a solid effort on the mound from starter Daniel Naughton and the bullpen. Naughton went 3.0 innings and gave up two runs on two hits with one strikeout. Trent Schulte, Michael Spellacy and Justin Blatner then pitched 2.0 innings apiece and combined to give up just one run on one hit.

Centerfielder Guthrie Morrison did the most damage on offense, going 4-for-6 with five RBI and a run scored. Ernie Yake, Austin Pinorini, Brett Harris, Mason Marenco and Daniel Fredrickson each had two hits, while Fredrickson, Jack Machtolf and Troy Johnston each had two RBI in the game.

San Diego jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a home run in the top of the third, but Gonzaga answered three in the home half of the inning and never relinquished the lead the rest of the night. In that inning, Yake and Morrison each knocked home a run.

GU added two more in the fourth with a two-RBI single by Machtolf, but the bulk of the offense then came in the sixth and the seventh. Morrison had two RBI on a single in the fifth and two more on a single in the sixth. Fredrickson and Johnston each also had an RBI in both innings.

Fredrickson Walk-Off HR Beats USD, 11-9

Gonzaga scored five in the bottom of the ninth to win

Gonzaga 11 - San Diego 9 Final Box Score Link

SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga's Daniel Fredrickson hit a three-run walkoff homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to propel the Zags to a game and series win over San Diego on Sunday afternoon at Patterson Baseball Complex and Coach Steve Hertz Field.

GU (12-12, 5-4) gave up a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to fall behind 9-6, but put the first three batters on and scored twice with a Brett Harris two-RBI double to bring the score to 9-8. After two more runners reached and USD (18-10, 4-5) got two outs, Fredrickson stepped to the plate and ripped a home run to right field for the win.

"It was a resilient effort, the grand slam was a gut punch, but our guys just battled in our half of the ninth," head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We had some great at-bats in the guys leading up to [Daniel] Fredrickson, and then the fireworks happened. It couldn't have happened to a better guy, these are games and moments that we point to."

Along with his two RBI in the ninth, Harris had four on the game to go along with two hits and two walks. Austin Pinorini and Troy Johnston each had two hits and an RBI, while Johnston scored three times and Pinorini twice.

Right-hander Michael Spellacy got the win after Fredrickson's heroics despite being touched up for the grand slam in the ninth. He came on for a scoreless eighth and had San Diego on the ropes with two outs in the ninth. Mac Lardner got the start, going 4.0 innings and gave up just two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Trent Schulte and Justin Blatner each pitched 0.2 scoreless innings.

After San Diego got one in the top of the first, the Zags answered with three of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Harris got his big day started with a two-run double down the line, and then Mason Marenco pushed won home when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Then in the fourth, Gonzaga answered another single run by USD with three of their own. Johnston knocked home the first run with a double, followed by an RBI sac fly from Pinorini. Johnston then scored the third run when he scampered home after Harris got in a run-down between first and second.

San Diego chipped away with one in the seventh before exploding with the grand slam in the ninth to take a 9-6 lead. That set the stage for Fredrickson's heroics in the home half of the final inning.

Gonzaga hits the road for a midweek matchup at Washington State in Pullman, Wash., at 5 p.m. Check GoZags.com for available links to live coverage.
