Default OT - Dave Rose reportedly out at BYU

    From Jon Rothstein's twitter:

Sources: BYU's Dave Rose is retiring. Has been the Cougars' head coach since 2005. Will hold a press conference today at the Marriott Center.

He is retiring ….well deserved....he had a fine run in a program that has some serious limitations...unfortunately for him he ran into a program that was nearly unbeatable in the Conference....I wish him and his family nothing but the best....

I watch his show on BYU TV and find he is honest and straight forward ….a real class act...

Cougar board must be getting hammered. Can't connect to it to see what the board there is saying.

Dave Rose had a remarkable run at #BYU that will be difficult to duplicate:
    348 wins
    .720 win percentage
    Six consecutive 25 win seasons
    13 straight trips to postseason
    Back-to-back 30 win seasons
    4 conference titles
8 trips to NCAA Tourney, 4 wins
1st Sweet 16 for BYU in 30 years

Is BYU much of an upgrade over Utah State? Feels somewhat like a lateral move.

Pope is HC at Utah Valley (not Utah State).'

I sure remember him from his H.S. days (and well as at UDub).

BYU is not an easy place to coach any sport and basketball might be even more so what with only 13 scholarship players and having players always going on Missions.../continuity always suffers with line-up changes every year.

I think Pope will take the job and do an excellent job and I believe their defence will improve immensely...in three to four years they will be very competitive in OOC and WCC play...JMHO that is

    There are built-in hurdles.

But, a lot of resources, a lot of powerful alum, and if one can get that drive to win and be getting to the tournament every year, seems like the perfect job for an up and coming LDS coach.

Great career for Coach Rose. He has one of the most competitive spirits in the sport. He beat the Zags a bunch. His teams were always tough as nails, physical.

I wish him the best. I feel like he'd be a great addition to the WCC admin or to BYU athletics, if he chooses to move on to a new career. Good luck to him and to the new coach that inherits the program.

No need to get into the LDS bashing. Jokes are fun but when a coach like Coach Rose retires they get one thread on this board. Let's not get off topic.

BYU message board peeps prognosticated recently that they would keep him around to set the all-time win record there, or some such. They noted how checked-out he has been and thought he didn’t have the competitive edge any more (recall his complaing about officiating and lack of warm up time recently. Read: excuse making). I’m surprised he didn’t stick around longer based off what they were saying.

    I wrote this on 3/12 :

"Introducing the next coach of the BYU Cougars, Mark Pope, currently the Utah Valley coach. He's done quite well, with limited material, and would be a great fit. (Um, he's LDS--that is what makes him a great fit-- go ahead, google up D1 Mormon college basketball coaches. Its Dave Rose and Mark Pope. And the bloom is off the rose. So, the Saints will elevate a Pope)"

I get so little right, let me be smug. :-)

Ahh, Utah Valley. That makes much more sense as far as a clear move forward, career-wise.

Here’s a look at the candidates who could replace Dave Rose as BYU’s basketball coach

Los Angeles Lakers assistant Mark Madsen, Utah Jazz assistant Alex Jensen, Dixie State College coach Jon Judkins and Portland State coach Barret Peery are also LDS, could be interested

The Deseret News even mentions BYU women's coach Jeff Judkins. That would be interesting:
