    Default Opponent Point Guards

Frankie Ferrarri played very well last night. Got me to thinking of who might be the best PG that the Zags have faced in recent memory.

    I'll start.

How about Mickey McConnell? The kid was a lights out shooter and ran the pick and roll as well as any collegiate point guard in the last twenty years. Exceptional handle. Extremely dangerous. Never understood why he never got much of a shot at an NBA roster. Size maybe, but Nash made it work.

Maybe not the best, but TJ McConnell was a quintessential PG. Having a surprisingly decent NBA career as well.

Jason Richards was the point guard when they beat Gonzaga in 2008....he had the good sense to pass the ball to Curry the #2 guard and averaged more than 8 assists per game ….. or maybe he was told to pass the ball to Curry ….ya think ???

The next year.... 2009..... Curry played point...

Yeah. Heard of selective memory? My selection was to forget about that game.

Well now we are stretching "recent" memory. If you wanna go back further, some really good ones. Jameer Nelson. Deron Williams. Jason Gardner.

Would've faced Steve Nash quite a few times, he was okay.

Ty Lawson during UNC's '09 Championship run was about as good of a college PG as I can ever recall seeing.

Put 40 on the Zags in an OT game in K1 (5 in the 1st half).
    But we don't play nobody.

One guy who really stood out to me was Tyus Jones, of Duke. I havent rewatched the game, so maybe it wasnt 1 on 1 the whole time, but its one of the few games where Pangos was just eaten alive.

I mean, he was a physically composed indiviual. His accomplishments speak for themselves. But he was nothing special athletically, and this game really stood out in stark contrast to the rest of his career. A game where his numbers are pretty bad, his match up was not great but very good, and while the game was decently close for a majority I never felt like he could over come his disadvantage, for one possession, on either side of the ball. Now, I am not sure it cost them the game. Winslow, if I recall correctly, sort of took over. I also think they defended him with multiple defenders, and I think with about 5 min left, Wiltjer missed a bunny that may have tied it up. But man, I always think about this game and how odd it felt for Pangos to be nullified. There are lots of games where players put up more points, or GU had a player perform worse. Heck, Pangos was physically mismatched often, but rarely or even never was so ineffective. Jones seemed a big part of that. Not like Curry or any number of others, but still.

Watching Jones the younger this year just reminded me of this. A player who was more physically gifted, equally cereberal, and with Winslow going nuts beside him.

I dont mean this to be a knock on Pangos, just that, as far a PG go, it always stood out to me.

Edited for spelling and grammar. And I added a bit for clarity, full disclosure.

And he was a freshman that year, if I recall correctly.
