    Default Other Games - 01/07 to 01/13/2019

Not too Many Games early in the week. Big game comes Thursday 01/10 when #1 Notre Dame plays #2 Louisville.

    Monday - 01/07/2019
#17 Iowa defeats Wisconsin at home 71-53.

    Tuesday - 01/08/2019
#9 Maryland goes into Lincoln and defeats the Cornhuskers 81-63 where Maryland Head Coach Brenda Frese earned her 500th career victory. Frese has a career collegiate record at Ball State and Maryland of 500-150 in 20 years (443-120 at Maryland). She has led Maryland to one National Championship and three (3) final fours.

Several Top-25 teams in action on Wednesday. Nobody directly in front of the Zags in the poll plays a difficult game tomorrow but #18 Minnesota plays #23 Michigan State in East Lansing.

Big game today as #1 Notre Dame meets #2 Louisville on ESPN. Here are Wednesday's Top-25 results:

    Wednesday - 01/09/2019
#3 UConn trounced unranked Cincinnati 82-38.
#4 Baylor handled unranked Kansas St. (who just released their starting center) 65-50.
#11 Texas stumbled in the 1st quarter against a poor Oklahoma team but got it together for a big 2nd quarter then cruised home 73-63.
#18 Minnesota continued its losing ways by falling to #23 Michigan State 86-68.
#20 Iowa State had no problem with league opponent, unranked TCU, routing the horned frogs 92-54.

Louisville leading 35-33 at halftime. Notre Dame getting some of the most blatant home cooking I've ever seen. They're not even trying to pretend, it's so bogus. 15-6 foul disparity, pretty much everybody from Louisville has 2 fouls and 2 players have 3. 23-6 FT disparity. Only thing keeping this game close, Louisville is clearly outplaying ND. I hate refs.

Halftime, Louisville leads ND 35-33. Louisville has two, double-digit starters with 3 fouls. UofL's all-american Durr, has 2 fouls but is keeping the Cardinals in the game by scoring 19 pts on 7 of 13.

#16 Kentucky is giving it to #13 Tennessee in Knoxville 38-28.

One week after getting into the Top-25 for only the 5th week in their history, #25 Indiana falls to 4-8 Ohio State 55-50.

#25 Indiana's stay in the top 25 is going to be short. They just lost to 5-8 Ohio St. 55-50.

Notre Dame took control in Q3. Ogunbowale is the dirtiest player in women's hoops.

#16 Kentucky took a 12 point lead over #13 Tennessee into the 4th quarter, then Tennessee started the 4th quarter on a 10-2 run.

5:00 minutes left and Kentucky still leads 62-58.

I quit watching ND-Louisville, too frustrating. Apparently Lou cut a 10 point deficit down to 2, but then refs stepped in w/ a bogus technical foul, gave ND multiple FTs and the ball back and staved off the rally. Crap game. ND is a really good team, they don't need the refs helping them out, but they get it anyway.

Kentucky held on by 2. Sounds like Tennessee got some serious home cooking during their come back but it wasn't enough.

Iowa was up as much as 8 but Purdue battled back and is going to get the upset. Up 62-57 w/ 3.8 seconds left. Iowa's best player Gustafson has been in foul trouble most of the game and fouled out.

The Big-10 keeps beating each other up and the SEC and ACC need that home cook'in from the refs to keep on rolling. Thursday's results are :

    Thursday - 1-10-2019
#1 Notre Dame playing at home stretches out the point differential over #2 Louisville in the 4th to win 82-68.
#7 Miss. St. pulling away from unranked Georgia at halftime 42-33.
The last undefeated P-6 team #8 NC State had no problem with Pittsburg tonight 63-34.
#13 Tennessee only made up 10 of the 12 pt deficit in the 4th quarter to lose to #16 Kentucky 73-71. A two game losing streak at home by Tennessee is not very common.
#17 Iowa traveled to unranked Purdue only to get beat 62-57.
#21 South Carolina had no problem with a bad Florida team 71-40.
#25 Indiana celebrated their first week in the Top 25 in many years (and only 5th week in the Top-25 ever) by losing to a poor Ohio State team 55-50. The Hoosier's time in the Top-25 will be limited to 1 week.

So who is leading the Big 10 after tonight's games? Yes, Rutgers is currently leading the Big-10 with an overall record of 12-3 and a conference record of 4-0.

Tennessee will probably fall below the Lady Zags in the next poll but knowing the "expert" pollsters, they will likely jump Kentucky over the Lady Zags, so likely no change in poll position after tonight.

I kind of like that the Pac 12 has Friday nights just about all to themselves. All of those games are intriguing. Stanford @ ASU jumps out because both teams are ranked. Cal may still be in the poll but I actually think Arizona should be favored in that one. Oregon St. got killed @ UCLA last year. The Bruins were better then but gave Stanford all they could handle last Sunday. I'm worried about OSU getting thumped again. Not listed above because of course neither is ranked is 0-3 Colorado @ 0-3 Washington. Somebody will get their first conference win. Both have been competitive in most of their losses.

For those interested in the WCC, here are the results from last night:

    Thursday - 1-10-2019

LMU takes down the Dons in Los Angeles 66-58
St. Mary's wins their 2nd game in a row at home against San Diego 74-60
Pepperdine easily holds serve at home against Santa Clara 74-48
BYU stays undefeated by taking down Pacific in Stockton 77-74

Big game on Sunday as BYU travels to St. Mary's for round 1 of that series.

    Hey SeaCat,

I don't know if you have seen this sight yet, but here is an interesting write-up on this weekend's Pac-12 Wbb games:

Cool, thanks ZagDad. I'm sure I've seen articles from that site before, but it's not on my regularly visited pages list. Might have to change that.

Anybody know if GU beat Cal, or not, in the private scrimmage?

I'm amazed with all the talent in SoCal, how UCLA and USC are just so-so most years.

Halftime at ASU, Stanford leads 34-22. Stanford not looking impressive, ASU getting lots offensive rebounds. ASU simply can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Cal stinking it up, losing to Arizona 33-22 at half.

I know I can be dismissive of the WCC generally speaking. I think you have to have some familiarity w/ ASU. It's almost impossible to look good against them. Just the way they play. Ugly it up, slow the tempo, gritty scrappy team, almost every game is a grinder. As bad as they shot in the first half, they were on fire in quarter 3 and got back within 1. Stanford weathered the storm and won 72-65. That was a pretty decent performance I'd say. Any time you can go to Tempe and get a win you have to be satisfied.

Washington St. was getting crushed by Utah 37-16. They came all the way back to tie it at 64. Looks like they'll lose, now down 5 w/ a couple minutes left.

Cal tied the game but Arizona pulled it out. Aari McDonald has scored 30+ in 3 straight games. Anigwe nearly had a 20/20 game w/ points and rebounds for Cal.

#15 Marquette had no trouble with Villanova 91-55.

With the game against Portland today and no Pac-12 games, it looks like this thread was forgotten today. The Top-25 results for today are:

    Saturday 01-13-2019
#4 Baylor routed unranked TCU 79-55.
#9 Maryland was behind after 3 quarters, but scored 30 on Michigan in the 4th quarter to run away from the Wolverines 83-69.
#11 Texas and #20 Iowa State were tied at half, but Texas built a 7 pt lead after the 3rd quarter and held on in the 4th quarter for a 64-62 victory.
#14 Gonzaga ran away from unranked Portland in the 4th quarter to win 97-71.

    Saturday - 01-13-2019 - WCC Scores
BYU holds on against St. Mary's 74-73.
Gonzaga blows it open in the 4th to defeat Portland 97-71.
Santa Clara takes 3 overtimes to undermine LMU 83-75 (that's all the points with 3 overtimes??)
Pacific Blows out San Diego 79-47.
Pepperdine scored almost half their points in the first quarter (31) and with both teams struggling to score held on to beat USF 69-50.

    Current WCC Standings
    - BYU 6-0 & 14-3
    - Gonzaga 5-0 & 15-1
    - Pepperdine 4-2 & 10-6
    - Pacific 3-2 & 10-5
    - LMU 3-3 & 10-8
    - St. Mary's 2-3 & 9-7
    - Santa Clara 2-3 & 9-7
    - USF 1-4 & 5&11
    - San Diego 1-5 & 8-9
    - Portland 0-5 & 8-8

Lots of good games tomorrow, but no Top-25 match-ups so little change the Lady Zags will move up based on tomorrows results.
