Bob Friend, who pitched more innings than anyone else in Pittsburgh Pirates history, died Sunday. He was 88.
The Pirates said Friend died at his home in Pittsburgh.
Friend holds Pirates record for innings (3,480 1/3), starts (477) and strikeouts (1,682). The right-hander was an NL All-Star in three seasons.
The 1st bet I ever made in my life was as an 8 yr. old on the 1960 World Series. Bet .50 with my Dad & took the Yankees (my team at the time).
Friend (& Mazeroski) beat me.
Paid my Dad off in pennies.

Frank Robinson, 83
First African-American manager in the MLB.
Only player to win MVP in both leagues. Triple crown winner in 1966... and World Series MVP.
Very good features on Frank Robinson here: https://www.si.com/mlb/2019/02/07/fr...incinnati-reds
and here: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/8...on-got-away-itWhen the Reds went out in Cincinnati to celebrate their NL pennant in October ’61, Robinson and Vada Pinson, the team’s two best players, were stopped at the door of the party—“no Negroes allowed.” The doorman let them through when he was told who they were. But the damage had been done. Wrote Robinson in his 1988 memoir Extra Innings, “We marched into the place, through the bar, and out the back door. I never looked back. I wanted to be at that celebration with my teammates, but I couldn’t be. And there was nothing I could have done about it except make a scene and mess things up for everyone.”
With that 1966 season, Frank Robinson became the first -- and remains the only -- player to win the MVP in both leagues. He also finished third in the MVP voting twice, fourth twice and in the top 10 a total of 10 times. He made 13 All-Star teams. He won National League Rookie of the Year in 1956, hitting .290 with 38 home runs at age 20 for the Reds. And while he never led his league in a Triple Crown category other than in 1966 when he managed it in all three, he led his league in slugging percentage, OPS and OPS+ four times, including three years in a row (1960-62). And he led his league in runs scored three times, in being hit by pitches seven times and in intentional walks four times.

Albert Finney, 82
A guy whom American audiences probably "knew" but likely never put the name to the face. But has done a tremendous body of work.
Notables: Erin Brockovich, Big Fish, A couple of the Bourne movies, and his last film... Skyfall.
