    WCC Player of the Week Thread

    WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – YOELI CHILDS, JR., F – BYU

    BYU junior forward Yoeli Childs led BYU to a pair of wins against in-state foes while averaging 31.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals. For the week, Childs shot 70.6 percent from the field and 92.3 percent from the free-throw line.

    In BYU’s 95-80 win against Utah State in Provo, Childs hit 11 of 18 from the field and 8 of 8 from the free-throw line for 31 points. He added seven rebounds, one block and a career-best five steals. In the first half, Childs totaled 14 points to help the Cougars claim a 53-34 lead at the break. In the second half, he scored 17 points and registered four steals to help BYU withstand a Utah State rally.

    Childs hit 13 of 16 from the field and 4 of 5 from the line for 31 points in BYU’s 74-59 victory against Utah in Vivint Smart Home Arena in the Beehive Classic. He also had 11 rebounds and two assists for his seventh double-double of the season. Childs scored BYU’s first 12 points on 5 of 5 shooting from the field and finished the half with 15. In the second half, Childs had 16 points on 7 of 9 shooting in the second half.

    With 31 points in both games this week, Childs has totaled 31 points in three-straight games. He is the first Cougar to score 30-plus points in three-straight games since Jimmer Fredette’s senior season.

    Childs was also named NCAA March Madness' National Player of the Week.

    Week of 12 /17/18: Anthony Townes, UOP

    WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – ANTHONY TOWNES, SR., F – PACIFIC
    Senior forward Anthony Townes was key in the Pacific men’s basketball 2-0 week against Big West squads – Long Beach State (74-68) and Cal State Northridge (79-77).

    Overall, Townes averaged 19 points on 70.6 percent shooting from the field and 93.3 percent shooting from the free throw line. In addition, he averaged 7.5 rebounds .5 steals and .5 blocks per game.

    In a rare Monday night game, Townes was one of three Pacific players to score in double-figures as he totaled 14. After only scoring two points in the first half, Townes went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and the free throw line to score 12 of his total points in the second half. Then in Sunday’s road game at Cal State Northridge, the Modesto, Calif. native produced his best performance of the season. In 30 minutes of work he scored a career-high 24 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field and 8-for-9 shooting from the free throw line and pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds.

    The two wins extends the Tigers win streak to 4 as they improve to 9-4 on the season. That record marks the best start since the 2013-14 season.

        SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for December 24, 2018.

        WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – TREY WERTZ, FR., G – SANTA CLARA
        Freshman guard Trey Wertz averaged 19.0 points on 56 percent shooting, 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds in leading the Broncos to a pair of wins last week.

        Wertz was impressive in Tuesday’s 102-92 double overtime upset of USC, posting a game-high 28 points, including 17 of the team’s final 19, on 10 of 17 shooting from the floor, The freshman guard gave Santa Clara the lead for good at 89-87 with a layup to open the second extra session. After missing his final two shots from the floor in regulation, he proceeded to hit 5 of 6 along with going 6-for-7 at the free-throw line in the two overtimes.

        The Charlotte, N.C., native had his first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high tying 10 assists to facilitate a balanced scoring attack in Friday’s dominating 77-56 win over Idaho. He keyed the offense of the Broncos who posted a season-best 24 assists and season-low six turnovers.

            SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference has named its Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for December 31, 2018.

            WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – AJARE SANNI, FR., G – PACIFIC
            Freshman guard Ajare Sanni led to Pacific to an impressive 84-75 overtime victory against UC Irvine, which entered the weekend contest with an 11-3 record. The win improved the Tigers to 10-5.

            Sanni shot 50 percent (8-16) from the field, including a 60 percent (3-5) effort from beyond the arc, and 80 percent (4-5) from the free throw line for a team-leading 23 points. At halftime, the freshman from Houston, Texas led all Tigers with 10 points. Then in overtime, Sanni opened the five-minute period with consecutive three-pointers. He finished the overtime session with 10 of the Tigers 21 points.

              WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – JADE’ SMITH, SO., G – PEPPERDINE

              Sophomore guard Jade’ Smith averaged team highs of 15.7 points and 8.0 rebounds along with 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals as the Waves won two of three games. He shot 58.6% (17-for-29) from the field and 54.5% (6-for-11) from three.

              He had a career-high 19 points in a win against Alabama A&M. He had 15 points and eight rebounds in the Waves' WCC-opening victory over Loyola Marymount. After an outstanding defensive performance that limited the Lions' high-scoring guard James Batemon, Pepperdine Coach Lorenzo Romar credited Jade's effort and said "he is about as good a defensive guard that I've coached."

              Smith's week ended with a 13-point, 11-rebound effort against San Francisco for his second career double-double. Though just 6-foot-4, Smith is Pepperdine's top rebounder at 6.6 per game. His scoring average has improved from 3.9 ppg last season as a freshman to 10.2 this season.

                WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – YOELI CHILDS, JR., F – BYU

                Junior forward Yoeli Childs led BYU to wins over Portland (79-56) and Santa Clara (80-74) while averaging 27.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals while shooting 60.0 percent from the field, 55.6 percent from 3-point range and 82.4 percent from the free-throw line.

                Against the Pilots, Childs totaled 28 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and one block. He hit 9 of 13 from the field, 2 of 4 from beyond the arc and 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. After an eight-point first half, Childs totaled 20 points in the second, tying his career high for points in a half. He helped the Cougars outscore Portland 43-26 in the second.

                In the Santa Clara win, Childs hit 9 of 17 from the field, tied his career high with three 3-pointers and made 6 of 8 from the free-throw line for 27 points. He also added six rebounds and two steals. He had a 16-point first half, helping the Cougars to a 40-33 lead at the break. With less than 10 minutes remaining, Childs scored six-straight Cougar points to help BYU maintain a two-possession lead. He finished the second half with 11 points.

                It is the second WCC weekly honor for Childs this season and third of his career.

                    WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – FRANKIE FERRARI, SR., G – SAN FRANCISCO

                    Senior guard Frankie Ferrari continues to be the catalyst in the Dons stellar season. While battling strep throat, the senior guard led the Dons to another 2-0 week, helping USF improve to 16-3 and 4-1 in the WCC. The 4-1 start by the Dons is their first since the 2013-14 season.

                    For the week, Ferrari led the Dons with 28 points, averaging 14.0 a game, while dishing out 4.5 assists. He shot 47.8 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from 3-point range. Against BYU on Saturday, Ferrari was at his best. He finished with a team-high 21 points, 18 in the second half. He shot an astounding 72.7 percent from the field going 8-for-11, he also shot 66.7 from 3-point range going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc while dishing out seven assists, helping the Dons snap an 11-game losing streak against the Cougars. His 21 points tied a season-high.

                      WEST COAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – COLBEY ROSS, SO., G – PEPPERDINE
                      In the Waves' only game this week, sophomore guard Colbey Ross scored a career-high 29 points to lead Pepperdine to an upset victory over Saint Mary's, which included 11 points in overtime. He also had nine assists, three rebounds and a blocked shot. He made both of his three-point attempts and went a career-best 15-for-16 from the free throw line.

                      Ross scored 12 of Pepperdine's final 17 points in regulation, including a free throw with six seconds left that sent the game to OT. He scored the Waves' first six points of OT and had 11 of the Waves' 15 points in the extra period. Up by two with under 30 seconds to play, Ross hit a dagger three-pointer to put the game out of reach.

                      Saint Mary's was a big favorite coming into the game, but the Waves ended a six-game losing streak to the Gaels behind Ross' effort. It was Pepperdine's 10th win of the season, giving the Waves their first double-digit win total since 2015-16.

                          I don't think they'll be able to give a POW consolation prize to a non-Zag this week. . .BYU, SMC, SCU, and UOP registered one win in league play

                            Because of their balance, it is difficult for a Gonzaga player to put up the kind of numbers you need to stand out....but in the end I think it will be Rui...….it would be ironic if he would make All American and not be the MVP of the WCC....but.....it could happen.

                              In kenpoms ranking system, BC is currently ahead of Rui, & has been for some time.
                              But we don't play nobody.
