Lightbulb Another Gonzaga / Big East Thread

This subject has been beaten to death but it's fascinating. Here's my pitch:

    Big East Expansion

    EAST
    Providence
    Seton Hall
    St. John's
    Villanova
    Georgetown

    CENTRAL
    Marquette
    DuPaul
    Butler
    Xavier
    Saint Louis or Dayton

    WEST
    Creighton
    BYU
    Gonzaga
Saint Mary's (contingent upon new arena)
    San Diego

    New teams in italics.

    Scheduling
2 games (home and home) in division - total 8 games
1 game all other teams - total 10 games

Basically, teams in the West would play a home and home against divisional teams, and have 5 home games and 5 away games east of Omaha. Away games could be done over the course of 2 road trips, if 3 games are played around a holiday weekend or school break. Worst case they have three trips east of Omaha and play Creighton as part of the swing on the third trip. Same rules would apply in other divisions as well.

All of the schools are private and religious-based and Catholic, with the exception of BYU which is a private and religious school.

I include San Diego because the Bay Area market is covered by Saint Mary's and because San Diego is a relatively big market and they have a viable Big East arena.

That shipped has sailed my friend. Gonzaga got everything it wanted from the WCC during the offseason. Like with the MWC, the whole Big East flirtation was to put pressure on the WCC to change revenue sharing, to lessen the league schedule to 16 games, etc. Gonzaga got everything they have been striving to gain from the league for years. Moreover, the Zags could have up to 18 games on the ESPN channels this year, and they continue to have their exclusive deal with Root Sports where the school collects most of the money.

Let's just create one big league and call it The NCAA. This is offseason banter.

    * Sorry if that comes across harsh.

You're fine. Don't be afraid to post topics, we need more people weighing in, not fewer.

If people don't want to talk about it, worst that can happen is no one posts, it's not like you used up valuable internet space. For every kitten on the net, there's a GU to Big Eas-Mid-Wes Conference thread!

BTW, substitute Santa Clara and LMU for SMC and USD and I think you're on the right track, but won't happen soon.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

I'd love to see it. The Creighton game, every conference road game would be like that. Villanova, Georgetown, Butler, Xavier, etc it would be awesome. Unfortunately it's years away if it ever does happen.

The way I would do it is try and take BYU with, but that's it. It would be two divisions of six teams, East and West, and work out the schedule so that all the teams back East only make one trip west. For example if Villanova played at Creighton and at BYU then they wouldn't play at Gonzaga. And if St. John's played at Creighton and at Gonzaga then they wouldn't play at BYU. I'd let people smarter than me work out the schedule kinks, but I'm sure they could come up with something in that regard.

It's a pipe dream for sure, but one that's fun to think about regardless.

Why can't the WCC be the best conference in the country? Why not here? I remember this being asked about Gonzaga 20 years ago. Now they're the best team in the country. Anything is possible.
