2018-19 Player Preview: Laura Stockton
Senior year and a name like none other

Going in to her senior year as a Zag, Laura Stockton continues to pave her own way and make a name for herself despite the mere fact of being a “Stockton.” While she doesn’t mind that everyone has heard of her dad, John Stockton (unless you live under a rock), and she was well aware of the expectations when donning a Gonzaga jersey, she is entirely her own player.

During Laura’s recruiting visit to Gonzaga, head coach Lisa Fortier showed her clips of both John and of Courtney Vandersloot, who was often compared to John Stockton. Fortier noted, “We talked about how she was a different point guard than them, but how she had potential to be just as good.” Even though it was an easy decision for Laura to play for the Zags, Spokane should still consider itself lucky to have such raw talent and pure grit.

Wearing No. 11 like her brother David did during his time as a Zag, Laura already ranks No. 7 in career assists at Gonzaga – and she still has one more year to go. Last year, she led the team with 3.8 assists per game, eighth in the WCC. At Pepperdine, in perhaps her best showing last season, Stockton matched her career-high with nine assists and set a career-high with eight rebounds, just short of a triple-double with 11 points.

In the past few years, Laura has become one of the Zags’ best defenders not because of her foot speed, but because of her basketball IQ. Quite frankly, opposing teams must find her downright annoying – she loves to sneak passes into the lane and surprise defenders with off-balance floaters.

While the Zag women continue to have upward success and motion, they still struggle with establishing themselves as a consistent mid-major team. Laura is well aware of this challenge and knows what her role is in trying to improve critics’ opinions. With letters spelling “Stockton” on her back and moving into a senior leadership role, we could possibly see Laura making great contributions to the program that will eventually become a powerhouse force. No pressure, right?
