    Sister Laura Michels Passes Away

    Feb. 8, 2018

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Sister Laura Michels, a longtime member of the Gonzaga University Ministry team, passed away yesterday evening--Wednesday, February 7--as a result of an ongoing medical condition.

During her 26-year tenure in University Ministry, she coordinated liturgies, retreats, and oversaw the Confirmation program. For a number of years, she has served as Chaplain to the Women's Basketball and Men's Baseball teams, as well as to Welch and Alliance Halls.

Sr. Laura's smile and joyful spirit brought happiness to all those she worked with throughout her time with University Ministry. She was beloved by the Gonzaga community and will be dearly missed.

Sr. Laura attended the Holy Names Academy in Spokane and entered into the Holy Names community upon graduation. She went on to teach for 19 years in the Seattle area, coming to Gonzaga from 1986 to 2000. She left Gonzaga in 2000 to serve in a leadership position at Holy Names. In 2006, she returned to Gonzaga.

University Ministry will offer their regular 12:10 p.m. Mass in the University Chapel (College Hall, 3rd Floor) on Friday, February 9 in honor of Sr. Laura. As able to do so, the University will share more information about funeral services and opportunities to celebrate Sr. Laura's life.
