Zags Take 11-Game Win Streak To Hilltop

    Face USF on the road

    Jan. 26, 2018

    Gonzaga Notes

Gonzaga (16-4, 9-0 WCC) at San Francisco (10-10, 5-4 WCC)

    DEFENSE:

    - The Gonzaga Bulldogs made it 11-straight wins and defense led the way again on Thursday night as they defeated Portland, 75-36, at home.
    - That defense forced 19 turnovers, one short of the third-straight 20+ turnover game for GU. It turned into 27 points off turnovers and 13 steals
    - Offensively, Jill Barta was fantastic for GU, hitting eight-of-her-12 shots for 21 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Zykera Rice, 13, and Jessie Loera, 10, joined her in double figures, both shooting above 50 percent from the field themselves.
    - The 36 points allowed against Portland is the lowest total allowed this season and the lowest since Gonzaga gave up 24 at Portland in 2014, the school record for lowest points allowed in a game. It was the largest margin of victory in a WCC game under coach Fortier.
    - Emma Stach moved into 10th place all-time at GU with her 117th made three.

    NOW IT GETS FUN:

    - The Zags have started WCC play with a 9-0 record just four times prior in their history, most recently in 2014-15. In three of those cases the Zags went undefeated in conference play at 14-0, prior to BYU and Pacific joining the West Coast Conference.
    - The Zags started 15-0 in head coach Lisa Fortier’s first season in 2014-15.
    - GU started the WCC season 9-0 in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

    SERIES HISTORY:

    - The Zags lead the all-time series 40-26 and are 15-15 all-time in San Francisco.
    - The Zags faced USF just two weeks ago in Spokane. GU won that game 74-47, as the Zags led in 15 of the 16 statistical categories, and had control of the game after three quarters. Jessie Loera led the Zags with a career-high 15 points on six-of-eight shooting, and added a career-high nine assists to lead GU as well. She added four steals and was two-of-two from three, matching her career-high with five rebounds.
    - GU’s loss in San Francisco in 2016 ended a 21-game win streak in the series the Zags had been on. Over the past six meetings, GU is 4-2 including a dominating 77-46 win over USF in the West Coast Conference Tournament Semifinals last year. GU is on a two-game skid in USF, as last year the Dons hit a three with 1:37 left to capture a lead they would not relinquish, and Gonzaga fell 77-72. The Zags did not hit a three pointer for the first time that season, and Jill Barta had her ninth game with 20+ points on the season, leading all scorers with 26.
    - Dating back to 2003, Gonzaga has won 30 of the last 35 games. Prior to the last two games, GU had won 12-straight games in San Francisco dating back to 2004.
    - The best game of the series, and one of the best in Gonzaga history, was a 91-84 four-overtime win on February 7, 2015 in Spokane. The game featured 21 lead changes and 14 ties. The game lasted two hours and 50 minutes with four overtime periods. The four overtimes were the most in WCC history during league play, and it was also the longest game this season at any level of women’s college basketball. Keani Albanez led all scorers with 20 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the field. Sunny Greinacher added 19 points and three blocks.
    - San Francisco had the majority of their success in the series in the 1990’s, winning nine straight from 1995-1998 and eight straight at home from 1992-1999.

    SCOUTING THE DONS:

    - The Dons had been on a run when they came to Spokane two weeks ago, but dropped that contest and after beating Santa Clara, were upset by Pepperdine in double overtime, with all games coming on the road. On Thursday they won at Pacific 81-71 to move to 5-4 in conference.
    - Four Dons average double-figures with Anna Seilund leading the way at 15.4 per game, joined by Michaela Rakova, 12.9 per game, Shannon Powell, 10.2 per game, and Kalyn Simon at 10.2 per game. Seilund had a career-high 36 points against Portland.
    - Rakova leads them on the glass at 9.7 rebounds per game.
    - The Dons lead the WCC in threes per game at 6.6 and defensive rebounds per game at 29.15
    - In conference games only, USF ranks first in three-point field goals made (six per game).
    - Molly Goodenbour, a two-time national champion at Stanford, is in her second year leading the Dons. She finished her first year on the Hilltop in 2016-17 with an 18-13 overall record that included an 11-7 mark in West Coast Conference play, good for a fourth-place finish, the Dons’ highest since the 2002-03 season. This year, she became the winningest coach in USF history through 50 games at 27-23...

    WINNING FORMULA:

    - The season is far enough along, some trends are starting to become consistent in Zags’ wins.
    - The Zags are second in the WCC in points per game, 72.8, and points per game allowed, 58.5. They are the only WCC team in the top-three in both categories.
    - GU has not let a late lead slip. They are 16-0 when leading or tied at halftime, ahead or tied to start the fourth quarter, and up with five minutes left.
    - Shooting percentage is vital, as GU is 15-1 when shooting better than their opponent.
    - Rebounding is just as important, as Gonzaga is 11-1 when leading on the glass.
    - Defense leads to wins once again, as GU has 11 wins when holding their opponent under 59 points.
    - Gonzaga held Portland to 36 points, the lowest point total allowed in four years. Santa Clara scored 44 points and San Francisco scored 47 in Spokane...

According to the Dons website, tomorrow is their annual "Play4Kay" game and if you wear pink you get in free. Courtside and baseline tickets are $10 and all other tickets are a $1.

Great cause and I hope they get a big turnout. A hostile crowd is better than a dead gym, but somehow I think if they break 1,000 fans tomorrow, they will be lucky.

Everybody is a little late with their preview write-ups on tomorrows game. If the Dons, Spokesman or Slipper get their articles out by tomorrow AM, I will post them.

Get a good nights sleep as it is into the Wolf's den we go. Until we beat them at home a couple of weeks ago, USF had a 2 game winning streak against us. Never underestimate the impact of War Memorial Gym.

    Go Zags,

I tuned in as GU trailed at the end of the 1st. Complete domination for Zag's in 2nd qtr..... up at half by 12. There were a few mistakes, but like the aggressive play from guards and pounding the ball inside! LS took a nice jumper, wish she would limit her shots to these types. Leanne Worth with a few buckets off nice feeds... Both Barta and Z. Rice performing well.

[Zags] Dominate Second And Third Quarters Leads To Zags 12th-Straight Win

Now hold three-game lead in WCC

          Jan. 27, 2018

          Final Stats

SAN FRANCISCO - Gonzaga dominated San Francisco in the second and third quarters, and won big again, 81-57, at USF on Saturday afternoon for their 12th-straight win.

Jill Barta led Gonzaga with 24 points, her seventh 20+ point game of the year, and nine rebounds. Zykera Rice joined her in double figures with 14, and Laura Stockton, Jenn Wirth, and Chandler Smith all scored eight. GU shot 51 percent from the field and outscored USF 55-21 in the second and third quarters. They forced 20 turnovers, the third time that has happened in four games. Jessie Loera had seven points and six assists off the bench.

Rice opened the game with a short corner jumper, but USF scored on their first two possessions leading 5-2. The Zags had a couple shots go in and out, and trailed 7-4 at the 3:53 mark. Barta hit her second baseline spinner and GU led 8-7 with two minutes left in the quarter. After going on a three-and-a-half minute field goal drought, USF scored the final four points and led 13-11 after one. Barta scored six points to lead GU. USF grabbed a 16-11 lead with an early three in the second quarter, but paint points from Barta and Rice, and a drive from Rice regained the lead, 17-16. Loera drilled a three and USF took a timeout, GU leading 20-16, three minutes into the second. The USF drought hit two-and-a-half minutes as GU completed the 9-0 run. Both teams went scoreless for over two minutes before Stockton found Barta with a beautiful wrap around pass in transition. The USF scoreless streak reached five-plus minutes and GU went on a 10-0 run. Barta led all GU with 14 points and five rebounds. Rice added eight and Stockton had four points, three rebounds, two assists, and forced multiple turnovers. GU shot 47 percent and held USF to 30 percent. Gonzaga outscored the Dons in the paint, 16-6, and 8-0 off the bench.

Gonzaga opened the half on a 9-0 run with seven points coming in transition, leading 43-22 with six minutes left in the quarter. Gonzaga hit a two-minute scoreless streak, but USF only closed the lead to 17 before Barta hit another spinning jumper. The USF scoreless streak hit three minutes as GU built a 26-point lead, their largest of the game to that point. Loera beat the buzzer with a running hook and GU led 56-34 after three. Gonzaga forced six turnovers in the quarter as points off turnovers reached 20 for GU. Rice broke into double figures with 12 points and Stockton had four assists. GU stayed hot, shooting 56 percent in the quarter.

USF hit two early threes in the fourth to cut the lead to 16, 58-42. Barta doused the run with an offensive rebound and putback to hit 20 points. The Dons trimmed the lead to 15, but Jenn Wirth rebounded her own shot, and found Smith in corner for a three as GU led 71-48 with five minutes left. Emma Stach hit one more three and GU won going away, 81-57.

The Zags shot 51 percent, led on the glass, 41-35, and outscored USF in the paint, 46-18. GU dished 18 assists with Stockton adding four to Loera's six. They scored 23 points off those 20 USF turnovers for 12 steals, led by Stockton and Barta with three each.

"Our team played a great offensive game today," Gonzaga head coach Lisa Fortier said. "We rebounded, we finished tough plays around the basket, and knocked down some threes. San Francisco plays so hard and they have some very versatile players. They made a hard push, but we were able to finish the game out on the road."

The Zags (17-4, 10-0 WCC) broke a two-game skid at War Memorial Gymnasium and after BYU lost to Pacific, now hold a three-game lead in the West Coast Conference. GU remains on the road all week next week, beginning with San Diego on Thursday at 6 pm. Live links are available at GoZags.com.

Game summary from the USF Dons:

#Play4Kay Game A Success on the Hilltop, but Dons Fall to Gonzaga

              THE RUNDOWN

SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's basketball team was defeated by Gonzaga, 81-57, Saturday afternoon at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center. Although it was a loss for the Dons (10-11, 5-5) the game was an overall success as teams and fans alike celebrated the #Play4Kay game.

The Dons and the Bulldogs opened up the game the same way they opened up play in Spokane just two weeks ago – trading buckets and keeping it close. With three minutes to go in the first frame, the Dons led 7-6. Although Gonzaga went on a 10-0 run, USF managed to close out the quarter ahead 13-11.

The Dons struck first in the second quarter with a triple, but the Bulldogs promptly responded by going on an 11-point spree. Once Gonzaga heated up, the Dons had a hard time slowing them down. Shooting 57.9 percent from field-goal range, the visitors outscored the Dons 23-9 in the quarter, giving them a 12-point advantage at half (34-22). Besides Gonzaga's sharp shooting, USF's eight turnovers in the frame hurt their efforts to rally.

Time in the locker room didn't slow down Gonzaga as they transitioned into the third just as hot from field-goal range, again outscoring the Dons 22-12 to find their largest lead of the contest (26 points) with 2:30 to go. The Bulldogs scored 16 in the paint and 12 points off turnovers in the third.

Even though the Dons paced the Bulldogs in scoring in the fourth, 23-25, the damage had been done. Gonzaga would not surrender the lead again and would instead finish out the contest with an 81-57 win.

              GAMENOTES:

Anna Seilund led the Dons with 16 points, five rebounds, and two assists.
Michaela Rakova added 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal in her 29 minutes of action.
Moa Lundqvist recorded 12 rebounds, one shy of her career-high 13 from earlier this season (Jan. 11, LMU).
The Dons had 20 turnovers, matching a season high that has been done on four occasions in the 2017-18 campaign.
USF shot 35.1 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from beyond the perimeter.
The Dons outscored Gonzaga 13-11 in the first quarter and shot 50.0 percent from field-goal range in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs had 46 points in the paint to the Dons 18.

Although the #Play4Kay game has now passed, our efforts to combat and cure women's cancers have just begun. Starting in February, we join a national initiative across high school and college teams to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Sponsored by John & Sue Gibbs, Play4Kay National Free Throw Challenge raises money by having fans and patrons pledge to donate for every free throw that is made by their team. Donators can then follow along on the National Leader Board to see how their team's donations stack up against other teams across the country.

Although the challenge officially begins in February (Feb. 1 vs Saint Mary's), please visit the USF women's basketball PledgeIt.org page to pledge now! Follow along on the women's basketball twitter to track how many free throws the Dons are making throughout the month of February. Use the hashtags #FT4Kay and #Dons4Kay to join the conversation and let us know you're donating!

              WHAT'S NEXT

Today's contest marked the start of a three-game home stand. The Dons will play at home on Thursday and Saturday of next week, taking on Saint Mary's on Feb. 1 and Santa Clara on Feb. 3. If you bought a ticket for the #Play4Kay game, you will be admitted free to both of those games. Contact our ticket services for more details.

Unfortunately as I noted above, $1 dollar tickets, $10 tickets for courtside and baseline seats plus free tickets to the next game encouraged a total of 415 brave fans to the Play4Kay game. It really is too bad the rest of the WCC chooses not to support their women's sports teams.

Good win against a decent team on the road.

A couple of concerns over the last couple of games against Portland & USF. 2nd game in a row we started out really slow in the first quarter. 2nd game in a row we shot really poorly from the free throw line (47.4% against Portland, 50% against USF). We shoot that poorly from the free throw line against St. Mary's we lose the game. I think it may be time for some more free throw practice.

4th quarter was very sloppy today and not just by the reserves. Gotta keep your heads in the game ladies.

On the positive side, the 2nd and 3rd quarters were very good offensively and defensively. Very good team when they play at this level.

Consistency ladies will bring you the WCC title. Big week, USD and BYU on the road. A couple of wins will give us a 4+ game lead in conference.

                  Let's bring it home Zags.

I had posted some of this information in another thread.

Back in the days of the fun and gun, we had Bowman (#1), Vandersloot (#2), Standish (#7) and Redmon (#9) all on the same team for two (2) wonderful years. Talk about having some serious scoring ability. HB came to the Zags the year before CV and KR and KS came to the Zags a couple of years after HB.

Bowman lead the team in scoring three (3) straight years (soph-senior). Courtney lead the team in scoring her senior year after Bowman had graduated.

Keep in mind that Redmon's numbers were for only 3 years, because she played her freshman year at the University of Washington.

If JB stays healthy, she should pass Jessica Malone relatively early next year. How far up the scoring list she goes will depend on the type of season she has. A really good year would put her in reach of TT and CV. To catch HB will take an exceptional year, but certainly is possible.
