Gary Bell to Aris in Greece

Looking forward to seeing Gary play for Aris in the Greek league, as announced in Eurobasket:
Gary Bell (ex Cholet) joins Aris - Sep 27, 2017

    POSTED BY:
    EUROBASKET NEWS

Aris Thessaloniki (A1) agreed terms with 25-year old American guard Gary Bell (192-100kg-92, college: Gonzaga, agency: Higher Vision Sports). He played last season at Cholet Basket in French ProA. Bell managed to play in three leagues in two countries last year. In 17 ProA games he had 8.6ppg, 2.2rpg and 1.9apg. He also played that season for Rosa in Polish PLK where in 16 games he recorded 12.1ppg, 3.1rpg and 1.1apg. Bell helped them to win the Supercup. He also played 14 games in Basketball Champions League where he averaged 12.8ppg, 3.3rpg, 1.6apg and 1.3spg.
Bell was voted All-WCC Defensive Player of the Year in 2015 at his college time.
Bell has played also professionally in Poland (Siarka).

He attended Gonzaga University until 2015 and it will be his third season as a professional player.

On Bell: Gary Bell is a tremendous shooter. An outstanding one-on-one player. A high energy player with an excellent physique and a winner as evidenced by his collegiate years. At nearly 6'4" he can play both guard spots and defend full court. Could potentially make a NBA roster or extend himself to the Euroleague.

In case you're curious, as I was, below is a map that shows the location of Thessaloniki in Greece, relative to Italy and other European locations. Thessaloniki is in the middle of the map, and the blue line below it shows the driving route and distance (5 hrs. 10 mins.) to Athens.

This story is interesting and .... challenging. Aris fans riot after their loss in a home game in the Greek Cup. http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/basketb...game-in-greece

Fans of Greek basketball team Aris Thessaloniki clashed with police on Saturday (Sunday NZT) at an indoor arena after their team lost the Greek Cup basketball final in Thessaloniki.

Fans tore out seats and threw them at police who responded with volleys of tear gas and stun grenades.

Panathinaikos Athens became Greek Cup champions for the sixth straight season, after beating Thessaloniki 68-59.

Hah...that seems like a normal day of pro bblall in Greece and the Balkans. Their passion for bball is unrivaled.

Good move for Gary. He started in Poland last year, played well and moved midseason to Cholet Basket of the French top league (Series A). Also a FIBA Champions League team. This is a bit of an upward move from Cholet but I am a little surprised he is not back with Cholet as he played well for them. Looks like Aris wanted him more. The Greece and French top domestic leagues are comparable in quality and both are FIBA champions League teams. However Aris has had a long history of being a top team in Europe in the 80s/90s/and 00s. Hover more recently they have been mismanaged and hit bankruptcy. The last couple years they are under new ownership and improving every year - could be a good club to be associated with if they are striving to regain their top tier status.

Gary's team won that game vs. AEK 64-62, so Aris is now 1-1 in the Greek league. Gary with 7 points and two rebounds. He's #44 in yellow, important to remember because his name on his jersey is in Greek.

That stadium where they play their home games looks to be on fire with enthusiastic fans. Looks fun! Love watching Gary play fierce defense, like always.

I feel like Greek fans sometimes tend to forget why they are fans to begin with. They remind of the English football fans/hooligans from 2-3 decades ago - not real fans, just ordinary thugs who are seeking for a reason to get into fights. It wasn't about the game anymore.

Gary's Aris team took a beating today in the BCL, falling to Cez Nymburk 70-99. Gary, however, was high scorer for Aris, coming away with 15 points on 5/9 three-point shooting(!!). Box Score.

Gary spoke at the press conference following the game, about the two-minute mark in the first video below:

Brief highlight video of the game (Gary as #44 in the black uni):

Aris' next BCL League game, vs. Nanterre, is on for tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 25. Box Score will be here.

In the meantime, I came across this photo of our guy #44 I liked from the last game:
