St Mary's pulled within 5, but Zags stayed tough.

    http://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/

"The real challenge begins now for Gonzaga after topping Saint Mary's for the West Coast Conference title. The Zags should have a No. 1 seed locked up. Now it seems like anything short of its first Final Four appearance will be a disappointment."

    http://www.sbnation.com/college-bask...-berth-gonzaga

“Despite a disappointing home loss to BYU in its regular season finale, Gonzaga will carry a sparkling 32-1 record into the NCAA Tournament. Whether that mark — which also includes impressive non-conference victories over Arizona, Florida, and Iowa State — is enough to earn the Zags a second No. 1 seed in the last five years is now in the hands of the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee.”

With the win tonight, Karno is just 1 win away from tying the NCAA record of most wins in a collegiate career. Two and he's got it. Man, here's hoping!

“And there’s no question about this: There’s a sizable gap between WCC top seed Gonzaga and second-seeded St. Mary’s. The Zags completed a three-game sweep of Saint Mary’s by a combined 51 points.”

College basketball fans are getting used to seeing underling Saint Mary’s try to chop down powerhouse Gonzaga.

from sports illustrated “Gonzaga (32-1), the regular-season WCC champion, was not particularly sharp in the WCC semifinals, beating Santa Clara by nine to reach the title game for the 20th straight season.
The Zags got their mojo back in a dazzling first half against Saint Mary's, then had to hold on after a shaky start to the second.”

all the WCC website has so far is some video of the game, but no article yet

Despite the media being on GU's side, I am still mighty scared of the committee giving that number 1 to Oregon if they win the Pac 12 tourney.

Lots of stupid comments beneath various tweets and articles. One guy says Zags are overrated because they have 5 top 25 RPI wins, and 3 of them against SMC. The RPI is garbage.

Fine go to kenpom.com then. Still #1 with the 8th ranked offense and the 3rd ranked defense.

    from WCC website
    http://www.wccsports.com/news/crumpa...ilt-03-07-2017

“Saint Mary’s coach Randy Bennett was in such a funk after the game that he declined to make an opening statement upon arriving for the press conference. He did warm to the moment a little later, however.” “We were so poor, I can’t even tell you,’’ he said. “In the first half, there wasn’t a phase we were good at. That’s about as bad a half as we’ve played all year.’’

“What a difference a day made for the Gaels, flying high on Monday and shot down on Tuesday. Playing a 32-1 team will do that to an opponent.

“We were crazy efficient in that first half as far as what we were doing with the ball,’’ Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. “We were aggressive. … We played outstanding in the first half, almost flawless with our defensive performance.’’

    and

    from CBS sports
“But sometimes, the best teams win. And that was the case in the WCC tournament, as No. 1 seed Gonzaga rolled through the league’s tournament to advance to 32-1, including a title-game victory against rival Saint Mary’s, which the Bulldogs dominated for the most part. The Zags appear set to enter the Big Dance as a No. 1 seed when the selection committee hands down its seeds Sunday.”

    http://www.cbssports.com/college-bas...tourney-title/

    and

From the Oregonian (except this journalist overlooks our recent Elite 8 in 2015)

"Gonzaga (32-1) will go to the NCAA tournament with the automatic berth. Their best finish was an Elite 8 appearance in 1999.
The Bulldogs looked like the No. 1 seed after steamrolling through first half when they took a 39-18 lead into the break."

I'm not scared... I am expecting it. I'm thinking that GU ends up the top #2 unless someone other than Oregon, Arizona, or UCLA wins the P12 tourney.

Myron Medcalf coverage of WCC Championship at the link above

"We've been good from Nov. 10 to March 7 and haven't taken any nights off," Few said after Gonzaga's 74-56 victory over Saint Mary's in the West Coast Conference tournament title game on Tuesday night at Orleans Arena. "[The NCAA tournament selection committee] can seed us fifth or whatever the hell they want to do. These guys are going to show up and they're going to fight."
    Medcalf on Zags "D": http://www.espn.com/blog/collegebask...al-four-dreams

    The improvement starts with Williams.

His length and combination of defensive execution -- in space and at the rim -- limits the mismatches Gonzaga faces on that end of the floor. He's comfortable against big men or perimeter players.

    And he's smart.

On Tuesday night, Few said Williams pushed Saint Mary's guards left after he noticed on film that they seemed more comfortable going right. Few said he'd trust Williams to guard any player on an opposing team with the game on the line.

"He's quite a weapon to have," he said.

Just my opinion, but the Zags cemented their #1 seed last night. They finished strong with those 3 tournament wins, the last one against a top-25 team on a "neutral" court.
