Default Gonzaga vs BYU.... predictions and other thoughts about the game

    Gunzaga 84
    BYU 67

The Zags finally get to play a game that really gets me excited. However I don't think that BYU is even close to being as good as they have been in recent years. And Gonzaga's defense is just so good. I'm looking to see our Ninja shooters return to form. Finally, I really look forward to seeing the match-up between Mt Karno and Eric Mika. It's been awhile since Karnowski has played someone who might be his equal. We'll see.

KenPom has us as 15-point favorites. I suspect the Vegas line will be a little less than that, but no reason not to expect a double-digit win.

We are good. BYU is not.

They do have 3 players in double digits in scoring and another 3 close. Our defense will be a game key.

With 10 minutes left in the game, GU will be up by as much as 25-30 points. Against our subs in the last 5 minutes the lead will get widdled down and the final margin will be 12 points.

Zags will be up and ready for the challenge. I think Matthews plays his best in the biggest games, and BYU is one of the bigger WCC games for Zags, so he will be knocking down 3's. Melson is oozing confidence this season and I've a hunch we see a breakout performance from him as he leads Zags in scoring this game. Zags win by 15 in a game that isn't as close as that score suggests: 85-70

BYU will put up a fight for the first 10-15 minutes, but NWG and Melson will eventually overwhelm their guards defensively. They will start rushing possessions. They will squander possessions with bad passes and tightly contested jump shots. The Cougar offense will collapse.

The Zags will go on a run and put it away just before halftime. The BYU fans will blame the refs.

Definitely want to see some sweet 3 shooting by Mathews. How things go with 3s may hinge on whether the Cougars enlist more than Mika to cover Mt. K. Zags have some time to prepare for this game although I expect BYU to play better than they have been of late being that GU will be in their house along with the likelihood of a #1 ranking. Would love to see the Zags win by over 20. Just think BYU will keep it a bit close in the first half then suffer the Zags' depth & D in the 2nd half.

Does anyone know why Kaufusi isn't getting minutes? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's not. He's reckless and a injury risk, but just seems odd to me he's not getting time. Looks like the most he's play is 7 minutes.

Big game for Zag's. They win. Karno aka "The Presence" Karnowski becomes all-time Zag leader in career wins.

Cougars try to outrun-and-gun GU (what else could they do?); it works for a half, but Zags defense cools off Emery and Haws. Refs let it get rough, swallow whistles for the most part. Combo time for Shem and Collins produces bounty of "paint points".

I think Childs has done a good job so far and Kafusi joined the party late (after football season ended ). I worry about Kafusi doing an "enforcer" thing and taking cheap shots. If he fouls out or commits a flagrant 2, it's no great loss to BYU. That's their MO. No reason to think it will change.

Zags 80 Byu 71. Byu worries me. Not so much because they might beat us at their place, but because of the way they often play us. Injuries are a big concern. Byu is at home and will be hosting one of the best teams in the country...they will do anything to win.
