". . .just as good as going to Duke."

Re: The Aussie Pipeline to Moraga ( from ESPN )

From Patty Mills and Matthew Dellavedova to the current roster, Saint Mary's College's romance with Australia's basketball talent has been a mutually beneficial relationship.

    Favorite quote, from Coach Randy:

Said Bennett: "They don't have a basketball hierarchy the same way as the kids in the United States do. Saint Mary's to them is just as good as going to Duke."
    Um, okay, Coach. . .

“They go to school. They do their homework. They shake hands. They say please and thank you. But once you throw that ball up, they will rip your heart out and watch you bleed.” -- Jay Bilas

I've speculated that some of Gonzaga's success recruiting foreign players might have something to do with the lure of the blue blood programs not carrying as much weight for kids not living in the US. But St. Mary's just as good as going to Duke? Well this coming from a coach who thinks playing a garbage OOC is the ticket to getting to the Tourney, which keeps blowing up in his face. So take it with a grain of salt.

Come on now... read the actual quote/article and don't take it out of context. He isn't saying going to SMC/SMC Basketball is as good as going to Duke. He is saying that to the Aussie kids, they don't differentiate as much as the American kids do between the Blue Bloods and other schools, which is true. If they did Mills, Delly, and a number of others would have more than likely not ended up at SMC.

If Mills, Delly, et al had gone to Duke, they would have learned what a "Burger Boy" is, from the bench. They sure would not have been playing as freshman or sophomores, except during blowouts.

No slap at them, you could say that about just about any all-WCC team member for the past 20 years, with a few exceptions, of course. That's what SMC has going for them, the opportunity to play a lot of minutes.
