History! Baseball Earns First-Ever NCAA At-Large Berth
GU will take on Arizona State on Friday at Noon PT
INDIANAPOLIS —The Gonzaga University baseball team earned its first-ever at-large berth to the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship on Monday, being selected to play in the Fort Worth Regional on June 3-5.
Gonzaga (35-19) is the No. 3 seed in the regional to be played at TCU and will play No. 2-seed Arizona State (34-21) in opening game at Noon PT/2 p.m. CT. Top-seeded TCU (42-15) will take on Oral Roberts (38-19) on Friday following the GU-ASU game at 4:30 p.m. PT/6:30 p.m. CT. The trip to Fort Worth is also a return for Gonzaga this season as the Zags went 1-2 in a three-game series against TCU on March 4-6.
“Today is a very exciting day for Gonzaga baseball,” said Gonzaga head coach Mark Machtolf. “We received our first at-large bid in program history. We’re very excited for our guys and for the entire athletic department.”
Gonzaga has an overall record of 35-19 during 2016 with 23 of those wins coming in road games, the second-most in the nation. The Bulldogs earned a share of the West Coast Conference regular season title – the third in program history – with an 18-9 conference mark, and their 35 overall wins are the most since 2009.
Last weekend, Gonzaga won two games at the WCC Championship and competed in the tournament’s title game. The Bulldogs opened the tournament with a 5-3 win on the back of Brandon Bailey’s 17 strikeouts on May 26, and they clinched their spot in the conference finale a day later with a Tyler Frost walk-off home run to down Pepperdine.
This is the second time the Zags have competed in the NCAA Tournament during its current Super Regional format. The first came in 2009 when the Zags clinched the WCC’s automatic qualifier with two wins over Loyola Marymount in the WCC Series.

Congrats Coach Machtolf, staff & players. Good Luck!

GU will hit the ball just fine. The critical factor will be whether they can get more than just Brandon Bailey and Brandon Morgan to pitch well, especially if they make it to a third game. #3 starter has been a huge question mark all season. Plus decent middle relief and closers absolutely have to pitch up to all their maximum ability.
Thanks Terp.

ABOUT GONZAGA:
•The Bulldogs are making their first NCAA Regionals appearance since 2009 and second in the current Super Regionals format. In all, Gonzaga has reached NCAA play nine times with the first seven coming between 1971 and 1981. They received the program’s first at-large bid on Monday; Gonzaga picked up the West Coast Conference’s automatic qualifier in 2009 due to their win over Loyola Marymount in the WCC Series...
NCAA HISTORY:
•Gonzaga is 8-16 overall in NCAA Regionals/Districts play, most recently going 1-2 at the Fullerton Regional in 2009. As a No. 3 seed, the Zags beat No. 2 Georgia Southern in the opening game but lost the next two
•The Zags’ first-ever NCAA appearance was at the district series in 1971, where they took on BYU in Provo, Utah. Gonzaga won the first game of that three-game series but the Cougars won the next two for the series win. They also reached Districts in 1973 and 1974 before making four Regionals from 1976 to 1981...
ZAGS VS. SUN DEVILS:
•Counting Friday’s game, the Zags and Sun Devils will have played each other in each of the past five seasons (since 2012). Gonzaga is 0-5-1 during that stretch, losing 5-2 last year in a single game at Phoenix in ASU’s Phoenix Muni Classic. In 2013, the two teams tied at 6-6 due to a travel curfew. Overall, Gonzaga is 2-16-1 against Arizona State, last beating the Sun Devils in 2006. That was a 9-1 win in Surprise, Ariz.
•Six of Gonzaga’s typical hitters have played against the Sun Devils before as OF Sam Brown, OF Tyler Frost, and IF Justin Jacobs are each hitting .500 (2x4) against ASU. Frost’s first career home run came against the Sun Devils.
•Three pitchers have taken the bump against Arizona State, including Friday starter Brandon Bailey. As a freshman in 2014, Bailey faced the Sun Devils in his third career start, allowing four runs in six innings of work, suffering the loss. Two other Zags - RHP Gage Burland and RHP Eli Morgan - pitched scoreless innings in relief against ASU last season...

Stout Pitching, Early Runs Push Zags to NCAA-opening Win
Five runs in first three innings leads to 5-1 victory
June 3, 2016
Box Score
FORT WORTH, Texas--The Gonzaga University baseball team jumped out to an early lead and rode Brandon Bailey's right arm to a 5-1 win over Arizona State on Friday afternoon to open the NCAA's Fort Worth Regional.
The Zags scored all five runs in the first three innings, and Bailey kept the Sun Devil offense at bay. Bailey threw 7.0 innings, giving up just one earned run on five hits, while striking out five and walking just one. Sam Hellinger finished off the final 2.0 innings without allowing a run and giving up just one hit.
Taylor Jones, Jeff Bohling and Nick Brooks notched two hits apiece on the day with Jones picking up a pair of runs batted in and Bohling and Brooks plating one run each.
The designated visiting team, Gonzaga wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Bohling gave the Zags a one-out base runner in the first with an infield single, and he scored when Jones doubled off the wall in left center. Two batters later, Jones scored on a ground ball from Justin Jacobs for a two-run GU advantage.
After Bailey retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame, the Zags added on a pair of runs in the second, doing so on four straight singles. Bohling and Jones posted the key hits with both bringing in a run, Bohling plating Jace VanDeBrake and Jones scoring Sam Brown.
Gonzaga's fifth run came in the third when Brooks hit a double to left center, allowing shortstop Dustin Breshears to come home. Breshears drew a one-out walk for the Zags' first base runner in the frame...
