This is what passes for basketball analysis at "God Is a Gael" :

They probably think Mark Few should wear a tie, too. . .

I have faith in Junior's range from way downtown.

    Do you ?

I have faith Byron Wesley is wise beyond his years and is showing us a display of grace under pressure.

    Do you ?

    Beat the Gaels.

Show them who the champions are.
Pretty prophetic ... especially these two.

    Huge Jr. 3.

Our "third" guard grabs 9 boards and does the inverted post-up guard ala Bouldin (one of my favorite Zag sets). Byron's been great. Quietly.

There's a corkboard above my credenza where the Gonzaga basketball schedule resides from late October to the start of the WCC tournament. That space is empty now, signalling the beginning of the end of another season.

The Saturday night loss to BYU felt as bad as some of the NCAA Big Dance losses. It shouldn't. Season isn't over. Vegas awaits. Selection Sunday is 13 days away. Zags are 29 - 2.

Still, there was something about the way they lost that bothered me and put me in a foul funk all day Sunday.

You were not alone, I felt the same way. I think all of fans who stayed after the game for the senior night speeches felt the same way. It was the most somber senior night in the twenty plus years that I have had season tickets that I can remember.

If you know who Robert Christgau is, you should read this review of his autobiography:

That's a review that might convince me to buy the book

    I was there, too.

And, the weird thing was, I don't think it was the loss so much as the way the team looked getting the loss, and I don't think it was so much how they "looked" in terms of play so much as how they looked in the eyes and facial expressions. We looked like the younger, more afraid team on the court.

I have one theory. The team knew darn well it hadn't been playing well. It knew darn well that BYU was red-hot. That combined with feeling like senior night was an absolute must win, put a pit in their stomach from the very beginning. They began the game with a few bad plays, shots that just didn't fall (but weren't far off) and this worry just grew. It grew until the last 4 minutes when it seemed like they just decided to play with reckless abandon - still, they got close more b/c BYU tightened up (missed FTs) than it was they played a lot better.

    That's my current feeling.

And, I've got to say, that doesn't bode well for the big tournament. If the pit in the stomach came about b/c of feeling that Senior night was "must win" - how are they going to respond to games that truly are - must win? The hope that I have is that they play so much better in the WCC that they don't go into it worrying about the must win aspect.

    That sound right to anyone.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.

It was a great time, Beast. Caught a cold, but that serves me right for staying up too damn late and walking those teeming streets filled with humanity's melting ###. . .

Looking forward to the opening weekend of March Madness and all of the fun & games that come with it. And the BBQ, beers, shots, and other stuff.

Since the WCC tourney landed in Vegas, I have been going there, using up vacation time ( I get five weeks) and have forgone taking the Thurs-Friday of the Big Dance off.

May have to rethink my strategy next year. . .
