Arcata, Calif. - Gonzaga University baseball right-hander Kenny Smith has been honored as the 2012 Horizon Air Summer Series Pitcher of the Year Award Wednesday.

This summer, the junior-to-be from Petaluma, Calif., pitched for the Humboldt Crabs in the Far West League. Smith had a 6-1 record with a 1.29 ERA in 49 innings while striking out 29 batters. Opposing hitters hit a mere .195 against him with 34 hits all season.

The Horizon Air Summer series is a unique eleven-week long competition among elite college summer wood bat baseball clubs from the Western United States. Fulfilling a mission of keen competition, the Horizon Air Summer Series crosses collegiate league boundaries to form a "league of leagues".

"It's obviously a great honor for Kenny," Gonzaga head coach Mark Machtolf said. "We know it's a good pitching league and being named the best pitcher in the league is impressive. He is a very tough competitor and is one of the best, if not the best, teammate on our team."

The Crabs won their second straight West League Championship this past weekend when they defeated the Neptune Beach Pearl's 4-3 on a game winning walk-off squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 11th inning. Smith started the game and allowed three runs over 7 innings and left with the game tied 3-3.

Including the postseason, Humboldt finished their year with a 37-9 overall record and a Far West League best 17-4.

For the Bulldogs last season, Smith had a 2-2 record in 11 appearances with a 2.70 ERA in 33.1 innings.

"For Kenny this upcoming season, the sky is the limit. We have a lot of returning guys and new guys so time on the mound is going to be a dog fight. Kenny has proved in big games that he is consistent and can do a good job. We are looking forward to great things from him," Machtolf said.

The Far West Baseball League is one of the premier collegiate summer leagues in the country. Teams are located mainly in Northern California and the league is devoted to providing a memorable and first-class experience for all participants. The league is a mixture of Division I/II/III, NAIA and junior college players.
