Gonzales Fans 10 As Collegiate National Team Tops Japan 4-1

HAARLEM, The Netherlands - Gonzaga University junior-to-be Marco Gonzales went seven innings, struck out 10, walked two and allowed just one earned run as the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team defeated Japan 4-1 Saturday in its Honkbal Week opener.

    Honkbal is Dutch for baseball.

The lone run off Gonzales, who went into the seventh inning with a no-decision in his last outing in Cuba, was touched for a solo home run by Yoshiki Eto in the third inning that tied the game 1-1. The CNT had taken the lead in the bottom of the first on Michael Conforto's RBI-single to score Trea Turner who got a leadoff walk.

A sacrifice fly by Conforto in the bottom of the third gave the USA a lead it would not relinquish.

Gonzales pitched out of several jams. Japan opened the second inning with a walk and a single, but an infield fly, a strikeout and a groundout ended the inning. In the third inning he surrendered a one-out walk but picked the runner off prior to Eto's round tripper. Gonzales was touched for another single following Eto's homer, then retired the next 13 batters before giving way to reliever David Berg who struck out five of the six batters he faced - including striking out the side in the ninth - to pick up the save.

The next game for the Collegiate National Team will be Sunday against Cuba, which took 3-of-5 games from the CNT in Havana prior to the teams departing for The Netherlands.

Marco Gonzales strikes out 10 in seven solid innings

HAARLEM -- Starting pitcher Marco Gonzales (Gonzaga) struck out 10 in seven strong innings and combined with David Berg (UCLA) to retire the final 19 batters of the game as the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team defeated Japan, 4-1, in its opening game of the Haarlem Honkbal Week on Saturday at Pim Mulier Stadium.

"Marco really got us started on a good note," Team USA manager Dave Serrano said. "We played good defense, Marco pitched extremely well for seven innings and then David Berg came in and did what he does. It was a wonderful atmosphere, the fans really get into the game. I hope we are playing in the last game when this place is rocking."

Gonzales allowed just one run on three hits and two walks to pick up the win and Berg then twirled the final two innings, fanning two batters to record the save.

"They did a good job of throwing strike one, cross-counting and keeping them off-balance," Serrano said. "Japan kind of guesses a little bit at the plate and I thought our pitchers did a good job of keeping the ball down for the most part." ...

From there, it was all Gonzales and Berg as they completely shut the Japanese offense down, not allowing even a single baserunner over the final 6.1 innings.

Team USA will continue pool play against on a familiar foe in Cuba at 7 p.m. on Sunday before squaring off with Puerto Rico, Taiwan and the Netherlands over the next three days. Medal-round games are set to begin on Friday, July 20.

Turner helps U.S. push past Cuba, 5-2

HAARLEM -- Trea Turner went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base and the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team scored three runs in the seventh to defeat Cuba, 5-2, and improve to 2-0 in pool play in Honkbal Week at Pim Mulier Stadium on Sunday.

"What a great baseball game between two very well respected teams in a fun and exciting atmosphere," Team USA manager Dave Serrano said. "We had five battles over there in Cuba and I think those prepared us for this victory tonight"....

Team USA will have Monday off before continuing pool play against Puerto Rico at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The U.S. will also play Chinese Taipei on Wednesday and the Netherlands on Thursday before the beginning of the medal-round games on Friday, July 20.

Gonzales Ends Hitless Streak With Single Against Puerto Rico

HAARLEM, The Netherlands - Gonzaga University junior-to-be Marco Gonzales broke out of an 0-for-16 slump with a pinch-it single Tuesday, but it wasn't enough as Puerto Rico edged the USA Baseball Collegiate National 3-2 in a Honkbal Week game Tuesday.

    Honkbal is Dutch for baseball.

Gonzales, whose hitless streak was in non-exhibition games, singled sharply to right field in the top of the seventh to advance Jose Trevino to third with the potential game-tying run. Trevino led off the inning with a single to center and finished 3-for-4 after singling again to lead off the ninth. Kyle Farmer hit into an inning-ending double play to quell the seventh-inning threat...

Puerto Rico hands Team USA 3-2 loss
Jose Trevino goes 3-for-4 with an RBI

HAARLEM - Behind 6.1 strong innings from former Major League pitcher Juan Padilla, Puerto Rico handed the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team its first loss in Honkbal Week, 3-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Pim Mulier Stadium.

"I hope this is a wake-up call to our team," Team USA manager Dave Serrano said. "We can't just out there with the USA jersey on and expect to win. Puerto Rico wanted the game more than we did today and they deserve the victory. You have to tip your cap to them."...

Team USA threatened to bring the game back to a deadlock in the seventh, using singles by Trevino and pinch-hitter Marco Gonzales (Gonzaga) to put runners on the corners with one out and knock Padilla out of the game. Relief pitcher Benigno Cepeda escaped the jam, however, inducing an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.

Down to its final three outs in the ninth, the Red, White and Blue put the tying run on base once again as Trevino dropped a broken-bat single into left for his third hit of the game to lead off the frame. The next batter got a bunt down but Puerto Rico was able to force Trevino out at second before turning another 4-6-3 double play just seconds later to end the game.

Team USA will close out pool play with games against Chinese Taipei on Wednesday and the Netherlands on Thursday before beginning medal-round games on Friday, July 20.

Gonzales Goes Hitless; USA Baseball Blanks Chinese Taipei 2-0

HAARLEM, The Netherlands - The hitting woes continued for Gonzaga University junior-to-be Marco Gonzales Wednesday as he went 0-for-3 as the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team stopped Chinese Taipei 2-0 to run its Honkbal Week record to 3-1.

    Honkbal is Dutch for baseball.

Gonzales, who got a pinch-hit single Tuesday to snap a 0-for-16 streak in non-exhibition game play, was back in the lineup Wednesday batting sixth. Gonzales struck out swinging in the second inning, popped to third in the fifth and grounded back to the pitcher in the seventh.

Kyle Farmer drove in the go-ahead run to give the CNT the lead in the eighth inning. Austin Cousino walked to open the eight, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Farmer's double to left field. Farmer scored on Johnny Field's two-out double to right.

The Collegiate National Team, 3-1 in pool play, will conclude pool play Thursday against the host team The Netherlands. Medal round play begins Friday with semifinal action.

Team USA blanks Chinese Taipei, 2-0
U.S. squad entertains fans during rain delay

HAARLEM -- It took eight innings, but the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team finally got to Chinese Taipei starting pitcher Chun Lin Kuo.

After the two teams traded zeroes for seven innings, Kyle Farmer (Georgia) and Johnny Field (Arizona) broke a scoreless tie with RBI doubles in the bottom of the eighth as Team USA shut out Chinese Taipei, 2-0, on a cold, rainy Wednesday afternoon at Pim Mulier Stadium.

With the win, the U.S. improved to 3-1 in pool play during Honkbal Week and clinched a berth in the medal rounds later this week....

Just seven minutes after the first pitch of the contest was thrown, steady rain forced the game into a rain delay that lasted nearly an hour. The U.S. squad wasn't going to sit on its hands though, taking the opportunity to entertain the 3,500 in attendance with comedy rather than sport.

After a solo performance as "upside-down man" by David Berg (UCLA) got the show started, the team mocked up a number of other events, including bowling, wrestling, hunting and even a wedding before the Chinese Taipei squad joined in to participate in a couple of dance numbers, as well as short jousting and sumo wrestling competitions, much to the delight of the crowd.

"I thought it was great for the crowd that sat through the rain," Serrano said. "We have a great group of guys who like to have fun and have really bonded together over the last three-and-a-half weeks. It's sad that our time together is coming to an end, but we hope to end it with a memory that we will all share forever."...

Team USA will close out pool play against the Netherlands at 7 p.m. on Thursday before beginning medal-round games on Friday, July 20.
