    Baseball: Zags Shutout Tigers

Gonzales Wins Pitching Duel As Zags Shutout Tigers

SPOKANE, Wash. - Marco Gonzales struck out eight batters as he went all the way to lead the Gonzaga University baseball team to a 2-0 victory over the University of the Pacific Saturday evening.

Pacific's Kyle Crawford (1-2) also threw a complete-game with two strikeouts and a walk, but the Tigers (3-15) offense could not break down Gonzales to help their starting pitcher.

Gonzales (3-0) was in command for a majority of the game. The sophomore allowed five hits and walked one in his first complete-game performance since May 16, 2011. The Bulldogs (11-5) were limited to singles on their 10-hit evening. Eric Lane, Royce Bolinger and Alex Stanford had two hits while Steven Halcomb, Clayton Eslick, Maxx Garrett and Alex Bonczyk added one...

With the non-conference series clinched, the Bulldogs will look to sweep the Tigers Sunday at 1 p.m.

Zags Can't Complete Ninth-Inning Rally; Fall To Pacific

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University baseball team tried to rally from a three-run deficit in the ninth inning but came up short as the University of the Pacific defeated the Bulldogs 4-2 in the non-conference series finale Sunday afternoon.

Marco Gonzales had three hits on the day, including his first career home run in the seventh inning, to lead the Bulldogs (12-6). Royce Bolinger, Clayton Eslick, Maxx Garrett and Billy Moon also added a base hit for the Bulldogs.

Andy Hunter (2-1) threw 6 1/3 frames, striking out four and allowing two earned runs on six hits and a pair of walks. Zach Abbruzza surrendered a double and a walk in 1 1/3 innings of work while David Bigelow struck out one but allowed a run on two hits in the ninth inning....

The Bulldogs will take Monday off and then make a trip to nearby Pullman to open a three-game season series with in-state rival Washington State University Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Following a day off Wednesday, the Bulldogs will welcome the University of Hawai'i for a four-game non-conference series starting Thursday at 6 p.m.
