SAN BRUNO, Calif. – (May 4, 2011 – – Gonzaga University baseball redshirt senior catcher Cameron Edman and junior pitcher Ryan Carpenter have been named the West Coast Conference/Rawlings Player and Pitcher of the Month for April, respectively, as announced by the conference office Wednesday.
Edman led Gonzaga during the month with a .414 (24-for-58) batting average, eight doubles, five home runs and 17 RBI. Edman had three hits including the go-ahead three-run home run in the ninth inning to give the Bulldogs a 5-3 win at Loyola Marymount April 15. In the rubber match of the series, Edman hit a pair of doubles to help the Bulldogs to beat the Lions 7-1. Edman also hit his first multiple home run game against Saint Mary’s April 23.
Edman is hitting .348 and is leading the ballclub in doubles (16) and home runs (6) this season.
Carpenter went 4-0 in five starts with a 1.62 earned-run average in 39 innings. Along with pitching back-to-back complete-games, one included a shutout, he struck out 40 and maintained a .194 opposing batting average. He threw the first complete-game of his career against Saint Mary’s April 21. He also matched his season-best of 11 strikeouts and allowed two runs on three hits. One week later, Carpenter went the distance again and flirted with a no-hitter in Gonzaga's 8-0 win over Santa Clara Friday. The left-hander was perfect for six innings but in the seventh he allowed a leadoff walk followed by a single. He finished the evening with nine strikeouts and five hits allowed. He also had three 7-inning outings, one of which was a shutout against New Mexico April 1.
Carpenter is 6-1 with a 2.65 earned-run average in 11 starts this season. He leads the WCC in strikeouts with 82 and is second behind teammate Cody Martin in opposing average with a .212.
This is the Bulldogs first monthly accolade this season and the first for both Edman and Carpenter in their careers.
The Bulldogs head to Provo, Utah, to play future WCC member Brigham Young University in a two-game series starting Monday at 2 p.m. PT. The Cougars will join the conference this summer.
