Default OT: Cougs Try to Cozy Up to Spokane

Meanwhile, the prominence of Gonzaga basketball has hijacked at least some of [Spokane's] interest in WSU.

"Gonzaga has stolen the town," says Moos. "They've done a great job, and they've reinvested in their success. But they don't play major-college football."
Note to Bill Moos...from what I've seen, WSU doesn't play major college football, either.

Just a matter of time. Riverpoint is a bunch of taxpayer supported buildings with no direction. Moos has been trying to figure out how to work with the Greater Spokane Inc group to get a bigger presence in Spokane.

They gave up on Spokane 30 years ago. Look for Moos to have WSU play a FB game in Spokane. They're just not in a Pac 10 city down there in Pullman. He must realize it by now. He should have worn a helmet when he played.

    I like the Cougs.

They aren't chickens and the bravery worked for them last year.

WSU used to play 1 or 2 football games per year in Spokane to a packed stadium. Then some dim wits decided that they needed to have a bigger presence in Pullman. They conned some Spokane alums to help expand the stadium in Pullman and then told Spokane to put it where the sun don't shine.

That was years ago, but a poor marketing manuver that they are paying for yet. Kind of like refusing to offer any courses in Spokane, until Dr. Frederickson of EWU decided to fill the void and the howles from Pullman led to the turff wars of yore. The good news was that WSU finally got off their rears and we have a much better situation now. Frederickson got bad mouthed but if he had not gone for it WSU would still only be offering a couple of courses in nursing.

My dad used to get season tickets to the Cougar games every other year so we could watch the Huskies in the Apple Cup. I always had a lot of fun at the Coug games, but they were a little better then. Spokane will support the Cougs when they are at least good enough to compete against other teams. I don't even think they need to be a winning team. They just need to stop embarrassing themselves.

I think they need to spend some money and get a good coach. They go cheap on coaches and that's why Bennett left. He was tired of riding the bus from Pullman to Spokane for road trips.

so is this a duck and weave maneuver?

To me it makes no sense: Major fundraising just underway to RENOVATE and UPGRADE Martin Stadium...yet your AD is in Spokane talking about playing games up there........

Makes me wonder if reverse psychology is being employed by Mr Moos to motivate his base to ante up money to help the renovation at Martin stadium (See Mr. X, we really want to play in Martin stadium but it just is not up to par for a Pac-12 program. Thus without the major upgrades we have aneed to look to play elsewhere for revenue drawing purposes so that we can tuck that extra revenue away so we can upgrade martin stadium in 2020. We would prefer it to start in 2014 but without fiscal backing it just wont happen)

Makes no sense to ship the players, coaching staff, cheerleaders, band an hour away to play in a smaller stadium that is far less acommodating for college football : The fans that go to the games will DRIVE down to Pullman. The students who go tot he game will NOT drive UP to Spokane....thus once again the students lose out on this proposal and I am not sold fiscally how it would pan out

The Cougs need to bring in a good opponent to the Spokane Arena. When was the last time they played anybody good in the Arena? About 1996 or 1997 when they played UCLA. Yea, I want to pay $25 (or more) to watch High Point.

Their comercials sound desperate, something to the effect of:
    "the fans are resiliant"
Yeah well you have to be when none of your teams can win a game and youve run out of p.ot.

I have completely lost respect for their athletic department over the handling of the drug issues.

    Default i'm a coug fan

whenever they are playing anyone but us. The "problem" is we are inextricably tied to each other geographically.

You can't turn around without running in to a coug, or an ex-coug (like ehlo, mark rypien) or an alum/fan/coach (Dick Fry, Jud Heathcoat) in Spokane.

Adding to the irritation for me is they're pretty nice folks, generally, and many I consider friends. A few of them have even become relatives.

6 is more than they have had the entire time Wulff has been there. Makes it seem a little further away.

If you want Spokane to you support you, it really is a simple formula. WIN!!! Spokane supports winners always has, probably always will. I hate to say this but if GU lost 3 or 4 years in a row the fans would vanish. GU had pretty decent teams in the 80's and very few fans. As luck would have it I don't see any huge drop coming anytime soon.

Bill Moos is a genious as an AD. He is soley responsible for building the juggernaut that is Oregon. He is now performing a marketing overhaul for WSU and I am pretty impressed with it so far (their new jerseys are so sick)...

Lets not be all high and mighty just because we get a free pass into the tournament every year...if we were in the Pac 10 this year we would have been elated with an NIT invite. If I remember right didnt they completely embarass us this year?

WSU has gotten away from targeting Spokane as its most important market, which it obviously is. (The whole point in the new marketing campaign) I havent heard anything about playing regular season games in Spokane, because thats not going to happen... having a spring game at Alby so that they dont force a demoralized fan base to drive to Pullman for an exhibition is a great move when trying to get some momentum behind the program.

Moos is trying to restore and capture the only market that has fans in volume: Spokane. It's about the money. Spokane has it and they want it.
The kids and teachers love it in Pullman.

WSU has done a lousy job in Spokane. Maybe they'll try to get some fan base in Spokane. If it's halfhearted ( it will be)....it'll be a silly experiment. Can't serve TWO masters fellas.

I like WSU and their fans..........but it only goes so far...... Hope they get better down there.

The "Undefeated Fan" ad campaign is the most hilarious marketing ploy I think I've ever seen for an academic institution. I laugh everytime I see that ridiculous commercial. It implies that most of the WSU fans have been defeated by years of poor performances by all their athletic programs. I guess they don't use the term "Couging It" for nothing... it's been well earned.

There may only be about an hour between Pullman and Spokane (depending on the speed trap in Colfax), but there are light-years between the student athlete institutions each school has put together. I'd rather see WSU keep there problems well south of Spokane. Thanks, but no thanks on WSU athletics in Spokane.

I'm not sure that is entirely fair. Of course, nothing says everyone has to be fair, but I want the best for the Cougs for two reasons. Most important, my best friend on earth grew up in Pullman/went to GU and cheers against the Cougs only when they play GU. Because of him, I saw the greatest football game ever playe that no one remembers, the WSU-USC match-up in about 91-92, when both teams were in the top 10, undefeated. Cougs up the whole game until Marinovich drove them downfield/scored/ two point conversion. One could say they "Couged" it, but - they were without their starting QB and played their hearts out. For that experience alone (I sat on the 50, 5 rows up in the student section, threw out fake yellow flags on what looked like a late hit.) That experience alone, will always endear them to me. I saw a game at Texas v. Ok St. quite the experience, but couldn't match that day.

Second reason I like the Cougs, they have to deal with the arrogance of the UW - which enjoys every advantage living on that side of the mountains imposes from the State House money, to the arrogant fan base and their disdain for the Cougs, reason enough for me.

I don't think they should play their games in Spokane, field a competitive team and I will drive down and see them. But they have to bring the kids up here and get them more involved in the community, more athletes at kids camps, helping at food drives, really getting some good will. Because GU is a basketball school (and baseball in another conference) there will never be much competition between the two for the dollar. Perhaps one game at the beginning of the season here (hell they play one in Seattle, a lot of alum here) before the students get on campus would work.

More than anything, they simply need some people who will come in and change the mindset, from victimization to the team that can. It sounds like they have a good start - and they need to quit their attitude that every player has to come from California - - Boise State is beating them there now, look to Eastern Washington/Montana/Idaho/even Texas, but they seem sooo focused on California.

That was quite a rant, would like some feedback, I am certainly no expert but I want to support them - but not until they show me they support themselves. And for Godsakes don't build a stadium improvement until you can justify it - - saw the same thing in Southern Miss, waste of money.

Here is a link to last years recruiting class, they recruit Nor-Cal because that is where Wulff is from and it is pretty underrecruited. Other than that look at the different areas where recruits are from...

Its actually pretty crazy how many states where involved. HI, OR, WA, CA, IA, FL, NC

Like you said though, I really never understood this dislike for WSU from Gonzaga fans, if anything they should be happy someone else hates UW just as much...
