Default The official GU boards Nike Global Challenge 2010 thread

As Spy alerted us to last week the Canadian team for the Global challenge contains two players that the Zag staff are going after very strongly, Kyle Wiltjer and Kevin Pangos.

Here is the link to the team page which is a little inacurrate but at least has the last names right.

    http://www.nikeglobalchallenge.com/n...ams/canada.htm.

As ZN alluded to earlier today, Oregon Live have covered the event very well int he past and I hope that we can get the same level of coverage this year.....It should be found here>

    http://highschoolsports.oregonlive.com/boysbasketball/

Canada can't look past INSEP first up, as it is so hard to know what they will be up against, a hot shooting day for the French could make it difficult. If they win they will face USA Midwest in the 2nd game, a team that includes SG Bradley Beal (who has really blown up this summer) and fellow top 10 (ESPN) SG Ben McLemore. Highly rated PF Anthony Davis and C Amir Williams are also on this team so Canada will have to bring its "A" game to advance into the finals like they did last year.

Obviously Canada has one advantage in that they will have some familiarity with each other and hopefully some of this team play will help them through to the finals. while saying that, it can be said that this is the most athletic Canadian team I have seen, with players like Kabongo, Birch, Bennett and Wiggins able to match their American counterparts when it comes to jaw dropping plays. Just remember Wiggins is a 2014.

I do hope that some Zag supporters are able to make the games (wearing Bulldog gear of course) and cheering on both prospects. Any reports from the games would be really appreciated as the closest I will get to them will be this computer ;( Any takes on Bhullar and Birch would also be interesting...

Default I will be there with Zag Gear on display.

Friday may be my only chance, but looking forward to seeing Kevin and Kyle take on France.

Maxpreps - Players to Watch at the Nike Global Clallenge:
    10 Players to Watch

    Ulysse Adjabga, France:
Adjabga has been a staple at the point guard position on French youth teams that have experienced a great deal of success internationally in recent years.

Bradley Beal, USA Midwest: The St. Louis guard and Florida Gator commitment has had a great summer, including MVP honors at the FIBA U17 World Championship and leading his circuit team to a pair of major tournament finals.

    Sim Bhullar, Canada:
Can this 7-foot-4 giant really play? Most reports over the summer indicate Bhullar has serious potential.

Jabari Brown, USA West: The Oakland (Calif.) High School guard was spectacular two weeks ago in Las Vegas and it will be interesting to see if he can maintain that level of play against even tougher completion in Hillsboro.

Anthony Davis, USA Midwest: Nobody has improved their stock more since April than Davis, who is listed at 6-9 and 187 pounds for the event. The rising senior attends Perspectives Charter in Chicago.

Nick Faust, USA West/South: This will be my first glimpse of Faust. Like Davis, Faust wasn't a huge name coming out of his junior year at City College in Baltimore, but he has blown up on the summer circuit.

Kevin Pangos, Canada: One of the top performers at the FIBA U17 World Championship in Germany earlier this summer, Pangos would be a Top 100 prospect if he played high school ball in the United States.

Austin Rivers, USA East: "The Artist" is capable of putting up 35 or 40 points on any given weekend. Will the Winter Garden, Fla., scoring guard explode this weekend?

Adonis Thomas, USA West/South: The Memphis wing always seems to provide highlights, but also does the little things to help his team win.

    Andrew Wiggins, Canada:
The 6-6 wing has been touted as Canada's best prospect – ever. Barely 16 years old, Wiggins posted 20 points in the semifinals of the FIBA U17 World Championship against the United States.

Christophe tweets about the French roster, in response to a request from Travis Margoni for comments:
@travismargoni Abit of a strang team. You can find info on some players on my website. Biggest prospect in my opinion is Paschal

    EuropeanProspects
Margoni has a post up about the event here, but it only talks about the players for the USA teams, which I don't believe include any Zag current prospects.

Sidenote: I do remember there being a bit of a stir here on guboards last year regarding Fabien Paschal ...

Nice review post of the key players.
Bhullar is still a project but has improved tremendously over the year.
Pangos - nothing but great potential
Wiggins - definitely a star in the making. This good at 15 and can only get better. The kid has got 'it'

    From OregonLive.com:
Nike Global Challenge: Nigerian basketball team scratches over visa issues
    The Oregonian, August 04, 2010 10:51 a.m.

The Nigerian basketball team scheduled to compete at the Nike Global Challenge this weekend was unable to secure necessary travel visas and will be unable to participate. In its place will be a fourth team from the United States.

The Nike Global Challenge features international competition among top high school players from the United States (divided into four teams) and similarly aged players from other nations. The event runs Friday through Sunday at Liberty High School in Hillsboro.

Jesuit's Kyle Wiltjer (class of 2011) is on Canada's team, and the United States teams are expected to include most of the top 20 players in ESPN's rankings for the class of 2011.
    That's a shame.

    Agreed ZN.

Canada now play USA East first up, out of the frying pan and now into the fire! the team has three of the top 10 ranked (ESPN) players in SG Rivers(2) , PF Macdoo (5) and C Christmas (8). They also have three strong Wings in Dorian Finney-Smith, Michael Gbinjie and P.J. Hairston. Canada has a slight advantage in Point gaurds with Kabongo and Pangos.

LMUZag, you will be in for a good game, we expect a report now.....

Had a quick check of the Roster today, Canada's listed team has changed.

Myck Kabongo is not listed now, and Kevin Thomas is also gone. Negus Webster-Chan has been added though. Team not as strong without the "Kamakazi Kid" Kabongo running the point, IMO at this stage Kabongo would be better equipped to deal with the athletic pg's the American teams will have. Pangos becomes the focal point with Chan now his backup. This may be good for the Zags as this will now be Kevin's team to run. He and Kyle will get a chance to play quality minutes together. The more the Canadians play a "team" concept the better Kevin will show his abilities.

I was actually suprised that Chan wasn't named in the first place. The team may be a little light on minutes up front without Thomas (from what I hear Bhullar is not a 30 mpg guy).

Coaching change as well as Vidal Massiah now assistant, where I believe that Rana was before.

If you are wondering why the change, perhaps it has somethig to do with Grassroots as both Thomas and Kabongo are part of that AAU organisation......

My recollection was that Rana was the third assistant, but clearly he's not shown on the coaching staff now.

Very interesting ... Wonder what's shakin'.

One other thing of note, The organisers have split the 3 USA teams into four as mentioned, previously and have hads to re-jig the rosters to spread out the 30 players amongst 4 teams.
Actually there are now 33 players so 3 have been added (see below for Zag angle)USA East now is missing Bradley Beal and P.J Hairston.

USA West now has GBJ, Nick Johnston and Jabari Brown as well as Johnny O'Bryant...It will be facinating to see how Gary meshes with Johnston and Brown (given that they have played with each other on Oakland Soldiers all summer long).

Would love to see a Canada vs USA West final......

Wow! I had not seen Gary Bell on a roster for Nike Global Challenge before! He was not on the original list of USA players (pdf file and the bottom of the main page). I see Austin Kuemper's on that team too.

Ro Russell plain and simple. He's a very shady dude. I'll just leave it at that.

I doubt it - there wasn't TV last year - but as I mentioned in another post, last year Oregon Live posted some pretty terrific highlight videos.

With the schedule change I will not be able to watch Canada's opening game I will watch Sunday's game whenever they play. The consolation prize for today is instead of Canada I will watch Gary Bell.

Good first half for both France and USA West including a swish by France from 3/4 court to end the first period. USA West up 53-50.

My unofficial stats had Gary Bell at 5 point on 2-2 shooting, 1-1 from 3, with 2 turnovers and couple assists. Very impressive looking stroke, plays under control, and would have had more assists if his team mates had not missed bunnies. Defensively Gary did well considering the match-up with his smaller, quicker man(Adjagba Ulysse, 6-0 163). France was constantly running Ulysse off screen and Gary was having to fight through them.

Johnny Bryant for US is a very large player(6-10, 245), but a black hole as far as the ball is concerned and hurt the team. Jabari Brown looks like he can do it all, and Brandon Ashley is smooth. USA appears to have the better players and athletes but plays 1 on 5 for the most part. Gary was one of the few US players looking to create looks for his team. France plays much more organized team offense and defence. Fabian for France was impressive as well.

Of course this all comes through Gonzaga rose colored glasses
