more rain and melting snow.
Chillier than the smile of a Wal Mart checker five minutes from quitting time
Just sunny enough for me to see Mt. Hood on my way to PDX this morning and Mt. Rainier on my way home after my company Christmas party.
Also had the pleasure of seeing Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, and Rainier at once as the plane was ascending. I love the PNW.
Anyone have any idea what the roads are like from Sandpoint to Spokane? We had planned to go to the WBB game today. The roads last night coming back from BIS were not too bad (except for the 3 miles after we left US 95), but it has snowed probably all night and it is still coming down.

Granny,
Not sure of the road conditions, but the weather report doesn't look favorable for the C'da area. Once you get into Spokane, we are very windy, but roads are in great shape.
Here is C'da's local forecast:
Overcast with snow showers and rain showers, then snow showers in the afternoon. High of 39F with a windchill as low as 23F. Windy. Winds from the SW at 20 to 25 mph with gusts to 45 mph. Chance of snow 100% with accumulations up to 3 in. possible.
12/17/2012 0600 am
Also some weather spotters information:
6 miles ENE of Rathdrum, Kootenai County.
Snow 3.0 inch, reported by public.
12/17/2012 0600 am
4 miles E of Spirit Lake, Kootenai County.
Heavy snow 4.5 inch, reported by trained spotter.
Also a wind advisory for today in Kootenai County.
Wind Advisory means that winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected.
Winds this strong can make driving difficult... especially for
high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.
Either way good luck to the Lady Zags tonight.
Windy, cold, snow expected overnight. It will probably make Tuesday morning's commute a dicey one. Forecast for Tuesday night's low temp is 11 degrees. . .
Baby It's Cold Outside !
Thanks!
We decided not to go to Spokane--there was a foot of new snow when we got home from BIS last night, and another foot during the night and still snowing, so Mr. ID has spent all day plowing snow and he is still at it.
ZaGranny
Mostly cloudy and 65.
6 inches when we got home last night and another foot and a half overnight. Not sure how much today, but it snowed off and on all day.
We love it, but it does cause us to change our plans once in a while.
We live in the snow belt--the Selle Valley. What part of Sandpoint are you in?

It snowed another foot after we came home last night. As a consequence, we decided not to go back to Spokane for the WBB--especially since Mr. ID has a doctor's appointment at 2:45 and we would not be able to get an early start.

It snowed last night but it melted already.
YES!!!!!
The snow was so deep yesterday that the mail carrier drove right on by. Mr. ID had the snowplow stuck at the neighbor's, so he hadn't been able to plow it out.
Here are some views from our porch.
I am standing in front of the front door. All of this snow has fallen off the roof.

Looking toward the shop. That large lump is our Ford Aerostar van covered with snow.

This is the uncovered bit of the deck. The snow is almost up to the top of the railing. The little dip is the path where I walked the other day--filled in.

Looking toward the west from the newly covered south deck. The mountain of snow came off the roof. The new wing makes a little place for the small dogs to go out and pee without having to climb the snow berm.

Snow is melting here. Was surprised that our streets weren't cleared this morning, since that budget should be full after last year's lack of snow. Maybe they cut the whole department in hopes that it wouldn't be needed anymore?
Mr. ID and the neighbor rigged up the woodsled to bring the Christmas decorations from the loft of the shop to the house.

Wow ZaGranny,
You guys must have gotten all the snow. So weird because there is no snow in Spokane.
It has been a pretty warm year so far.
Rain, Snow, Wind, Gray, Cold. . .
I always say that I have enough canned and frozen food in the basement to cook for us for 2 weeks on the wood stove in the event we have a massive power outage. We have them a lot, but the longest has been 4 hours.
So when I was planning dinner tonight (bison chili) I decided to cook it in my cast iron dutch oven on the wood stove to practice since the weather outside looks like we could have a power outage--wind, stress on the branches from snow. Last time I did this was a goulash a few years ago in a soldier's style tent in Northern Quebec in a windstorm. I even used a flashlight to see if the meat was browned instead of moving over a lamp.
It's going to take a little longer than on the electric stove, but I started it early.

Bison chile on the wood stove turned out great. Guess we won't starve if we have a major power outage.

What is the elevation where you are? I know the mountain in No. Id. produce those updrafts that dump snow on the western side but it has just been so warm in Spokane that it is hard to imagine that your temps have been low enough for snow - unless you are fairly high up.
Regardless, glad to hear that you prep so well for those inevitable power outages. And, your "bison chile" sounds perfect for enjoyment in that weather, wish I could try it. Do you think that you could send me a bite through email or my p.m. account on this site. I know you will, thanks!
We are at 2200 feet in the Selle Valley between the Selkirks and the Cabinets, with the Purcells to the Northeast.
For some reason, this is the snowbelt. We get more snow than Sandpoint 16 miles south or Bonners Ferry 18 miles north. It is 31 degrees and snowing right now. Mr. ID saw a moose at the end of our drive when he went down to get the paper. The snow drives them into our area.
Bison chili is a snap. 1 of everything.
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 lb. ground bison (available at Yokes frozen and sometimes at Costco fresh)
1 chopped onion
1 can tomato soup
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can kidney beans
1 can chili beans
1 sm. can diced green chiles (mild or jalapenos)
1 tablespoon chile powder
1 tablespoon ancho chile powder (leave out if you want milder)
1 teaspoon salt
Brown the bison and onion in a large ### and then stir in everything else. Bring to boil and reduce to simmer. Simmer for half an hour (45 minutes on the wood stove). It's a very forgiving recipe. Sometimes I use black beans for one of the beans.
I serve it with flour tortillas, shredded cheese, chopped onions and sour cream on the side.
