View Full Version : Ode for Elvoce

At USF there is a great hoops tradition
Where disliking Bush isnít considered sedition.
In the city by the bay there is a some mighty fine dining
While over at USF there is a whole lot of whining.

Dons fans hate the Zags, as well they should.
Weíve beaten their butts as much as we could.
The last time we lost Dons old geezers rushed the floor
Before the Zag fans could get to the door.

Lots of fellas using walkers and crutches
Shouted as they had the Zags in their clutches.
Some Zag fans were upset, but not yours truly
Instead I found it cute, even if was a little unruly.

This bickering between brothers, serves no end
The Dons have a tradition thereís no need to defend.
They won some titles when Silicon was young
Back in the days when nursery rhymes he sung.

Since then the world has changed, and the Zags now rule
To say anything different makes you sound like a fool.
Still the Dons fanís like to get under our skin
Pretending theyíre superior, even born without sin.

The Dons had Russell and Jones and won the whole thing
That was a big deal, and not appropriate to ding.
Itís not nice to rub salt in your brotherís wound
Even if his song is old and a bit off tune.

We should respect the Green and the Gold
For it must be said, they were great in days of old
Iím not worried about the game against Eddie
I know coach Few will have his Zag lads ready.

I love looking at the trophies at War Memorial
From the days when they gave Pete Newell a tutorial.
The Donís need to console themselves with the past
Cause they ainít getting better, at least not very fast.

Silicon counsels to show some respect
And upon our own frailties we should reflect.
Weíve lost to some good teams and some bad
And a number of troubles this Zag team has had.

The past is important, and should not be dissed
Even though some Zag fans get a little bit pissed!
Give them their due, they were once great
We hope our future brings a similar fate.

This Saturday their loyal alums will be there in force
Old and tedious, dressed in Green and Gold of course.
Los Locos will be there planning a fiesta
But soon theyíll be seen taking a siesta.

One thing is for sure, when on USF we descend
They will hear the Zag fans, right till the end.
For we will be shouting and sharing good cheer
While Dons fans will be crying into their Anchor Steam Beer

Good Zag fans should gather over on Geary
Of imbibing on campus Silicon is weary.
Zag fans need to be polite and show them some class
Just before we go out and hand them their ass.

One note of caution for their old coach
A subject perhaps Sili should not broach.
After the game donít go out drinkin
Just because the Donís played so dang stinkin.

Losing to the Zags ain't no shame
Even for a team who once enjoyed fame.
The Zebras can't help you and neither can Bill
He can't even get into his uniform still.

The Zags should not brag or act overly haughty
To do so isn't polite and borders on naughty.
Let's hope that Eddie can stay on the wagon
While the fortunes of the Dons keep on saggin.

Sili is done, and if we somehow lose
He will be found drinkin a bottle of booze.
The Zags have lost quite a few times
But more often than when Silicon rhymes.

Elvoce, my friend this one is for you.
Sorry you won't be here, it makes me quite blue.
Hope you can find a spot to watch the game
And the Dons trying to recapture their fame.

Great job, Sili! I was just thinking the other day that it was about time for a poetry contest, and then your gem shows up.

Hope all is well with you Sili! Root our Zags on home!

best regards,

Didn't it used to be bad luck to post a poem before a game!?!

02-15-2008, 08:58 PM
After a really long day you made me smile. Thank you.:D

Go!! Zags!!!

Our resident poet is back :)

Although Sherman Alexie's poem "March Madness" (in the tragedy/elegy category) stands heads above the rest this one ain't bad Sili!

Great seeing on the Board again Sili. Miss ya. Enjoy the game today. Miss the good ol days of poetry and revolution on this board. Much, much tamer today.

Nicely done, Sili. Move over, Dr. Suess. :)

Somehow, there isn't the rancor for the Dons
Not as much as for those Stanford Pawns.
Figured we were good enough that there would be no danger
Presented by a few rhymes from the Napa ranger.

Now If we lose, permanent retirement I hear by swear
To jinx the Zags is not at all fair!
I look forward to seeing all the trophies and pennants
Won by the old Dons, the previous tennants.

I hope that you fellas are thawing up north
Down here the spring flowers are about to burst forth.
I better get going, its a ways to the city
And the drive there today promises to be pretty.

GO ZAGS, and Hail to the Dons of yesteryear
They were great and created great fear.
I love Bill Russell as much as any Don did
But these Don's can't wreck our tournament bid.

02-16-2008, 10:56 AM
Have a nice drive. I'm envious. And we are thawing out finally.:)

Even though some Zag fans get a little bit pissed!
Give them their due, they were once great
We hope our future brings a similar fate.

Again and again the faithful advise,
‘We won crowns in the 50’s, I tell you no lies.’
Meanwhile oldsters sit diapered in a gym so run down
That rats vie with bugs for the USF crown.

Living in the past is a double-edged sword;
Quentin Dailey’s there too, he can’t be ignored.
The glorious past of Russell and Jones
Is buried with Dailey’s nurse-jumping bones.

Wonderful meter it must be said
However this close to gametime, best put it to bed.
The alums of USF are tired, old and most of all nasty
Seems like their team, is kind of a patsy.

I enjoyed the game and their cute little rooting section
It seemed as though most of their fans had a viral infection.
They coughed and they sputtered, and they floundered around
After the game their wasn't a dry eye to be found.

I am linking to Don's Central, but be sure to get your tetanus
The barbs are wicked and among us Zags, cause a lot of fret in us.
War Memorial has been newly rennovated they say
Yet it never was much, not even in it's day.

They played some nice songs before the ball game
Songs by Judy Garland and Tony Bennet that achieved great fame.
What a wonderful thing to console all their old tired fans
Knowing that their team is condemned to be nothing but also rans.

Wow, what a cesspool!!! Thanks for the tetanus warning. I've just been called ignorant, provincial, xenophobic, homophobic and racist, all by virtue of the fact I live in Spokane. If I moved to S.F. next week, I suppose I would instantly become hip, cosmopolitan, tolerant and progressive. All through the magic of geography!!!
