The Panther's Richard Zednik had his jugular vein slashed by a skate during a game: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hXBZwYpZdhh3Zptt86qtBmxln5MwD8UNRC6G1

I saw it on ESPN and just had to put my hand over my mouth in shock. I have always had this morbid wonder/fear about something like this happening. Quick prayer that he recovers with no problems.

Pretty crazy stuff. The announcer got it right, he definitely caught the carotid. Thankfully the docs were right there. We've got great protocol for handling lacerations to the carotid - the big danger is blood loss before the patient is able to get proper medical treatment and it looks like they had a handle on that within a minute.

Definitely one of those things about hockey that you always fear happening but seems so rare you never think it could.

I just heard about this incident that occurred back in 1989...

Very scary horrible stuff. I can't imagine being conscious and thinking I only had a few minutes to live. :shiver:
