"Zags Still a Lock in WCC
Mar 01, 2007 | 7:45AM | report this The last time Gonzaga lost 10 regular-season games was nine years ago when a Dan Monson-led Zags team went 24-10, 10-4 in the West Coast Conference and headed to the NIT.

The Zags are 21-10 this season entering the tomorrow's West Coast Conference Tournament, but Mark Few’s team is a lock – even without ‘shrooming big man Josh Heytvelt – to make the Big Dance.

These guys still have the best backcourt in the league in Jeremy Pargo and Derek Raivio. They don’t have a horse to go to down low, but that’s not going to matter all that much in the WCC tournament.

Santa Clara had its shot and while you’ve got to feel bad for outgoing coach BLEEP Davey, the Broncos had a prime opportunity to end Gonzaga’s seven-year run atop the league in the regular-season.

Instead, Santa Clara lost a pair on the road to Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine.

While Davey’s team knocked off Gonzaga on Feb. 12 in Spokane, it’s not the same Bulldogs team even though just a few weeks have passed. The Zags lost to Santa Clara and by one point to Memphis before winning their last three.

David Pendergraft and Abdullahi Kuso have given Few and his staff the inside presence they need and Kansas transfer Micah Downs, a talented yet enigmatic Mike Dunleavy-clone, seems to have finally gotten “it”.

Downs scored 16 against San Francisco and then went for a career-high 20 against San Diego. He’s playing power forward, which makes the Bulldogs a difficult matchup when Few can put out Pargo, Raivio, Downs and 6-foot-5 freshman guard Matt Bouldin alongside either Kuso or Pendergraft.

It’s difficult to count out Gonzaga – especially when they’re the underdog."
