Apologies to Grier, but I hope SMC wins - we want them with that ranking unsullied next week, without having lost in the conf.

It'll probably sound smarmy, but SMC is finding out how hard it is to be king of the hill...

I agree. Go St. Mary's. I want the Zags to be the first to knock them off. Also, I like the idea of a 2 horse race much more than a 3 horse race.

I like watching USD - Brandon Johnson is a top notch PG and fun to watch.

They are still inconstant, but can really put it together - and it looks like they may pull this one off.

Brandon Johnson is unreal. The guy can flat out ball.

Look back at our game thread for USD. Brandon Johnson almost pulled that game out for them until he ran out of gas.

Let's face it....we have 4 tough road games to go:

St. Mary's
Santa Clara
San Diego
probably San Francisco

This weekend is going to be huge!

While I do wish we would have gotten SMC undefeated, ya gotta be happy for Grier, Bankhead, and Co. Johnson is a player, Pomare is solid, Jones looks like he'll be very good down the road. Nice job Torreros...

I like sharing the target with someone else. Lesson here boys and girls is that it is always hard to win on the road during conference play...especially when you are ranked!

Let's not get too excited until AFTER we play these two teams on the road.

Johnson/Pomare > Mills/Samhan

That's basically it. At least in this game. I am starting to believe that Johnson is the most underrated guard on the west coast, and one of the most underrated players on the west coast period. What's great about him is that the better the competition, the better he plays. He put 25 on SMC in this game, 26 on Gonzaga, 27 on Kentucky, 19 on USC, etc.

I felt that the game at USD was a danger game for SMC, just like it will be for GU.

If you're the Gaels, beating Gonzaga next Monday night is close to a must win now. Gonzaga is likely going to beat SCU on Saturday (although nothing is for certain), and if GU beats SMC, the Gaels will be 2 back in the standings. They will then have to hope that Gonzaga loses to another WCC team AND they will have to beat GU at K2. There is a good chance that both of those things won't happen. And that's assuming SMC wins all of its remaining WCC games.

I'm not surprised...we will have our hands full in San Diego. Johnson might be the most underrated in the country.

I agree 100%. That Brandon Johnson kid is the most underrated guard out West. He does a great job of creating. Is he a junior? If so, USD will be tough next year too.

Anyone else think this league is on the way up?

- St. Mary's three best players are all underclassmen.

- San Diego's two best players (Johnson, Pomare) should be back next year, too.

- Santa Clara's going to lose a couple good program guys after this year (Henke, Angley), but that moose John Bryant will be back next year and they've got a well-regarded new coach.

- San Francisco's gotta find a coach, but they've got a nice player to build around for the future in Lowhorn.

- LMU, Pepperdine and Portland aren't that good, but each team has a nice nucleus of underclassmen.

Looks to me like this league will be pretty competitive for a few years. Is the WCC the Missouri Valley of the West?

"- San Diego's two best players (Johnson, Pomare) should be back next year, too."

USD has ZERO seniors on the roster. The two top players are juniors (Johnson and Pomare), and the next best players are sophomores (Dejon Jackson and Chris Lewis) or freshman (Rob Jones, Trumaine Johnson, Devin Ginty, Nate Lozeau). This team will be near the top of the conference for at least the next few years and probably longer with Grier coaching.

It was USD's youth, combined with promising players like Johnson and Promare, that attracted Grier to the USD job. He recognized that he was going to have some success right off the bat....that it wasn't going to be a program overhaul type of deal.
