Lots of talk about the Zags improved defense this year. Here are some stats for the year so far. It may still be a little early to make too much of the stats, but it's a good start.

Gonzaga Defense #19 (http://kenpom.com/stats.php?y=2008&s=12) according to kenpom (one behind WSU).
2007 - #80 (ttp://kenpom.com/stats.php?y=2007&s=12)
2006 - #178 (http://kenpom.com/stats.php?y=2006&s=12)
2005 - #117 (http://kenpom.com/stats.php?y=2005&s=12)
2004 - #40 (http://kenpom.com/stats.php?y=2004&s=12)

The Zags are holding opponents to 37.8% shooting from the floor and 28.3% from the 3 point line. They are also holding opponents to 60.6 PPG. GU is averaging 2 more blocks per game than any GU team since the
2000-2001 crew.

The team is playing well defensively, and in theory, it should get even better when Josh gets back. Blocked shots per game will definitely go up.

That being said, I still think the defense can get better.

Still too many uncontested treys from the coffin corners when the defense overshifts. There were too many Swiss cheese moments last night.

BZ has a super point about the easy 3s. But I think that as the younger players get used to playing together more and understand when they have to colapse versus when to stay out, this will change. Also I think that they have to understand who they are guarding. Some players can be left open (not totally), but more than the 3 point shooters that are streak shooters and when they have it going, it is hard to stop. You have to know who you are guarding to know when you are the one that is suppose to help down low. Also in our zone, the wings have to understand their responsibilty out in the courners and get out quicker. I hope that we will see this as the season goes on and the players learn the system and how to trust in each other.

As example against us, if they make sure that Micah/Steven/Daye/Matt does not get an opening for an easy shot, then it is hard for him to get in rythem. But after he has made 1 or 2, then you can be in his face and he would still probably make it.

blocked shot team total will rise significantly when Daye gets more PT

and when he gets more weight next year, which can put him inside more often

Hey ZagsGoZags,

Do you think perhaps the blocked shot total will rise when Josh returns to the lineup and is able to provide some weak side help?
