View Full Version : Have You Bonded with This Team?

There is a lot of gloom and doom on this board, which is good, I guess, for those who prefer despair after a tough, bitter loss.

My question is this: Have you bonded, as a fan, with this team? I definitely have for three big reasons:

1. They always play hard. There is a difference, sometimes, between playing hard and playing well, but this team has never disappointed me with effort.

2. They play pretty good defense. We couldn't always say that about past teams.

3. They never give up. They didn't give up when they were down 17 to Texas Tech, they didn't give up last night when they were down 12 with nothing working on offense. Last year's team got outscored by WSU 14-1 down the stretch. Nuff said.

For me, this is enough. I am not the type of fan whose existence depends on wins only. I'm the type of fan who enjoys the very good athletes we have representing us giving us maximum effort. Anyone who thinks our Zags weren't working hard last night and leaving it all out on the floor are just plain wrong.

This team will continue to work hard. They will continue to get better. These guys are "my Zags".

Here here! Well put, and I would only add that part of the joy of the journey is finding your way through the difficult passages. The abilty to learn from our experiences (good and bad) is as important as the talents and other gifts we have been given.

Bravo! Finally some high spirits on this board!

I'm right there with ya. These are "my zags" as well. I am with them to the end. They are fun to watch, have great heart, and great personality. They work hard, and i believe it will pay off. I had a blast yelling for they kids last night. I hope they respect the Cougs, and from the sounds of the interviews they do.

Keep fighting, get and stay healthy, and keep having fun playing the game.

Go zags!!

This year's crew has a competitive streak. How can you not love a team that will play to the end even when nothing's falling on offense?

I agree with you whole-heartedly El V!

We've got a special group of kids....I'm with them all the way!

Great Post El Voce. My sentiments as well. "These are my Zags." I love that line. Have I bonded? Hell yah. I love this team. Win or lose. I just feel better when we win.

I was watching game at a local bar in Yakima (Jackson's) and the place was packed. I'd say a couple hundred people were there. It's a really big bar, with 3 huge rooms to view the game. It was almost like being at the game. I was surprised at the # of Gonzaga fans in Yakima. I'd say overall we were almost as equal to the Cougs fans. It was pretty quiet in the bar the first half, but after 10 min to go in the game it became very vocal in there. People yelling and screaming, especially me, at the refs and at the coaches...acting just like fans. Believe me...The Cougar fans there were definately elated with the vicotory. One young fan came over to the Zag section at the bar and really let us have it at the end. He tried his best to really put us in our place, and he rubbed the Coug victory in our collective faces. Much has been said about Zag fans on this board, but after the game the Zag bunch here in Yakima showed as much class as the Zags do after a loss. No one yelled and screamed at this elated, young Coug fan. He was damn proud of his team. In fact I applauded him because I love the passion for a team that he clearly showed.

I was sick after the game. I hurt inside. But I must tell you, I really enjoyed watching the game in that bar. It was like being at the game almost on a neutral site. I'd like to put out a HUGE KUDO for all the fans in Yakima, both Zag and Cougs, for a fun evening last night. I imagine in most bars it was the same. Fans in Yakima are definately much more passionate then Tacoma fans where I watched several games last year. I hope to get together with this group of Zags here for another game. Love you guys.

How could I not? These guys are whole human beings, greatly gifted, sometimes imperfect, but always willing to go out there and do their best and take the praise and brickbats with guts. You celebrate with them in the good times, you hang with them in the not-so-good times, and sometimes your heart just goes out to them.

Man, that pic hurts. I feel ya Pendo.

I really like this team a lot, but I don't feel that I've bonded with them yet - I've thought about it and I think the reason is the Heytvelt/Gray situation. I feel like the whole team isn't out there, like the personality hasn't gelled yet. I keep waiting for the second shoe to drop. It will, though, in time.

This was a hard game to watch us loose and it must have been a hard loss to play in. The team will bounce back and us fans will too. For all the knocking on the Zags and the refs and WSU players etc that has gone on, I think the Zags played hard and well for the most part and gave it everything they had. You can't ask more than that.

I love this team and its potential. But I am also realistic. They are not yet an elite team. Can they get there? I think they can, if everything breaks right.

But have I "bonded"? You bet.

El Voce once again confirms his claim to being the Voice of Reason.

These are a great bunch of kids who along with past teams have put our school on the national map. The present crop will make us all proud before they move on.

How can ya gripe about young guys taking the #6 team down to the wire....the defense was good. In fact, the defense kept us in the game. I have no gripes with their effort...is it Saturday yet???? The REAL painful ones are in March, not December.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGS!

PS. This team will be tough to stop come March.

I'm on board now.

That wasn't true a few weeks ago because it is a young team and I hadn't seen them enough. But I am getting used to them now, and see a lot to like.

(The WSU game didn't do much for my "bonding" -- not because they lost but because I couldn't see the game. Following Gametracker just doesn't do it for me.)

I'm especially attached this year as well. I don't know if its because I know a lot of the guys on the team especially well personally, cause thats also been the case in seasons past, but man - it's not just about the success of the Gonzaga name this year. I want each and every player on the team to personally enjoy the success as well.

Great post, El Voce! I'm bonded with them because while they don't play 'pretty', they do play hard and they don't quit. How can you not admire that? Well, at least I love a team like that. :)

Great post. That's why he's the VOR.

All I ask is that we recruit character guys and that they give full effort. Check, check on both of those. The losses don't matter to me at all.
It's all part of the great journey that these young men are going through.

Play hard, play smart, and have fun. With all the talent and great coaching that we have, the wins and losses will take care of themselves.

GREAT POST, El Vee!!!!!! It's enough to tear a guy up!!!!

And the picture of Pendo is what I remembered from watching him when it was becoming evident the Zags might not win. It was plain to see Pendo was tortured by it.

The East Coast sweep sealed the deal for me.

There is a finality to losing in March that cuts deep. Nothing in December is remotely like March.

I've NEVER depended on wins only to support my team...

bonding is personal...

I take it personally when one newcomer says "f off" to a team captain...you are a frosh dammit, don't act like a punk...I do NOT care how highly recruited you were...THIS PROGRAM and all of the components therein deserve respect...BUY IT!!! or take UCLA and the bench.

Austin is a FROSH, he will get over it if he is a ZAG...if not, he will continue the attitude...BZ has faith in him, and I can trust that...

But Sometimes, even good guys need to be called out.

I have a problem with pornographic songs being played in the kennel...

I hope we never forget our own backyard...I worry that we might not see guys from Brewster, Clarkston, Canada, or Portland anymore.

Not that I don't appreciate the guys from out of state...but don't come in here acting like you are doing us a favor by being here...take a page from Jeremy's book...act like you care....

This may seem ironic coming from me...but I think we need Josh more than ever now.

I believe, after all the drama, he may have the where with all and humility to put it all in perspective...

He will not have it easy at any point this year...but the team needs to see him man up and get behind him...he needs that as well. REGARDLESS of what the fans do.

On the other hand, I love Sacres' smile, I wish I could see more Ira, I hope Gray gets better soon, and I look forward to Austin showing some ZAG character...

David is my favorite this year...I see him dissed, or THINK I see him dissed...

Go ZAGS!

love,
mendiant

Geez, Mendiant.... Thanks for dropping by to cheer us up... I think we should have the guys just stop off here routinely after every game for their tongue-lashing from Mendiant. :(

With friends like some of our fans ....

And bolding? As if we don't get your point without it?

Crimineez.

Only if they need it...

Popular men under 30 should never be coddled. Makes them all ego...

Sorry for all the bolding, that actually was unintentional.

love,

PS Now maybe someone can ask if we really care about these guys on many levels...
the answer for me is...duh YES!!! bolding intentional this time.

Was it Daye that told a team leader f*** off?

I figure the commitment to supporting a team is like the commitment in marriage: "for better or worse...". Yeah, it is painful when they lose, but just think how they feel? They're young, they learn from their losses and make adjustments for the next time. Obviously enough people are bonded because it is impossible to see a game in person -- even games at the Arena!

I like everything you said in your post Mendiant. I agree totally. I think there is a very long history of the Californians coming into GU thinking and believing that California basketball players are God's gift to mankind, and that players in Washington can't play basketball.

I think the first few games Daye really was playing team ball, and his points were up. He proved to me he could really pass. In the last two games I don't think I saw him pass at all, and that's a huge problem to me and for the team. A few fans have posted that Daye was taking those last shots in the last five minutes because no one else would. That's BS. Don't tell me that guys like Pargo, Pendo and Downs are afraid to shoot....OMG....that is almost histerical.:lmao: :lmao:

I believe Few called for the one on ones, and if so, as others have said, it was a coaching mistake. Coaches make mistakes. Few believes in Daye a lot. Honestly, I back whatever Few says. I mean, afterall he's our coach. I may disagree with him from time to time but if he choses to do the same thing again today I back him up and I hope the team does too. We all need to know who's the boss and get behind him.

I like Daye a lot, and I think we all do. I think the difference between Few and me is that he is looking ahead, planning ahead. He knows many things that I do not. Afterall, he's one of the best coaches in America.....I thinik we all need to rally behind Few...But I agree that Daye needs to become a Zag first and always. He needs to be a team player and let the game come to him and stop forcing the game with all the one on one plays.
