And not your own WCC team, either.

Go Winthrop! Hope this year is Sweet Sixteen for the Eagles. Love that program.

My favorite weaker conference team is Memphis. I think they have a very good shot at winning it all. They have multiple offensive threats and their defense is absolutely stifling.

Winthrop. An experienced team that is exceedingly well coached and always gives high level competition a game. Solid guard play, a versatile foreign big man, and a go to wing scorer in Martin.

I have such sympathy for them...they're stuck in one of the 4 worst conferences in the country (Big South - 29th in the RPI), but have a team that would be contending for the Missouri Valley Conference title if they were in that league. They recently went out on the road and beat Missouri State with ease for their Bracketbuster game.

BTW - Southern Illinois, along with Texas A&M, are the best two defensive teams in the nation IMO. There are other good ones....Kansas, UCLA, but those two are the best for me.

Creighton - would love to see a home/home although it wouldn't do either team any favors to drop that particular game this year, I'd still love to see it.

Small, Jesuit, and prone to overachievement. They also have the best mascot of any Division I team I've ever seen: The non-stop, wing-flapping Hawk puts even Spike to shame.

I really like to cheer for teams that we've played, and I'll be cheering for them all in the Big Dance: Butler, Nevada, and Memphis (along with BCS schools we've played: Georgia, Texas, Duke, Carolina, Washington State, Stanford). It blows my mind how many teams that we've played are going to be going to the Dance in March....If we don't go it's going to be "highway robbery, IMO!!!.

Of all these teams we've played my favorite non BCS school is Nevada. I saw them play in Seattle and I think they are destined to the Elite 8. I think Memphis will also make it to the Elite 8.....And Gonzaga will play one of them to go to the Final 4!!!

Nevada.

I know, I know, they aren't cute underdogs or anything like that. Just a solid, well-coached team that is more than the one guy who snags the headlines ( Nick Fazekas ).

( And I don't consider the WAC a BCS conference, no matter how well BSU does on the gridiron )

I really like the Butler Bulldogs. Their team reminds me of our teams from the late '90's. They run an incredibly efficient offense and seem to get the most out of their slightly slow, slightly undersized players (no dig on their talent, but they aren't as athletic as a team like Memphis). If they are average-to-hot from beyond the arc, look out.

I also think Nevada is poised to make a deep run. It seems like they play with a bit of a chip on their shoulder.

I precited Davidson may win a game last year in the dance and I stick by the same prediction this year. Well coached team. Very good record. And they are from what might be the smallest D-1 campus, student population-wise, in America.

Don't overlook them in March (assuming they win their conf tourney, which they must do).

For a military academy team to earn a Top 20 ranking (w/out a freakish talent like David Robinson on board) is simply amazing. Kudos to the fine young hoopsters of the Academy, Coach Jeff Bzdelik and the entire coaching staff. They recently lost to UNLV and may drop out of the Top 25, but they remain my favorite non-BCS team and I hope they soar to new heights in March...at least until they meet the Zags.

M*A*I*N*E although I don't even think we qualify for mid-major. maybe lucky qualifier in weak conference. Albany looking like the best of a bad lot in America East, though if Black Bears can get into the half of the bracket that says we don't have to play both Vermont and Albany, maybe we got a shot.

Right now, though, I am more worried about the hockey team-- we need to get at least 3 wins v. UMass and Merrimack. I think we will get 'em.

the Bball team did get five straight wins at one point this year, so not impossible.

I would love to see Maine v. Gonzaga-- Black Bears did perform the warm up before Battle in Seattle, so we have one in common opponent (Nevada)... It would be great-- Maine gets some prime time, Zags get an easy win. Sounds like a win-win for me....

Go Black Bears!

Watching Harold "the Show" Arceneaux's Weber State teams go up against Ben Howland's Lumberjacks those years while living in Flagstaff provided many a pleasant memory. Those two NCAA appearances and close first round losses against Cincinatti and St. Johns still cause nightmares, though. Good win tonight vs. the Grizzlies. Go Jacks!

Ever since we played them 2 years ago in the dance, I've had a high level of respect for Winthrop. Looking back at their lineup for that game its no wonder they are playing such great ball this year.
04'-05' lineup: 06'-'07 lineup:
F/C BRADSHAW, Craig soph. F/C BRADSHAW, Craig sr.
F WILLIAMS, Phillip soph. F WILLIAMS, Phillip sr.
F SHULER, James jr. G JENKINS, Michael jr.
PG ###NOR, Chris fresh. PG ###NOR, Chris jr.
G MARTIN, Torrell soph. G MARTIN, Torrell sr.

2 years later they have basically the same lineup who were already darn good as underclassmen, now with all that experience. But they added Jenkins to the mix who is a dead-eye shooter who blew up for 40 already this year (12-18 from 3). I love the fact they are taking on the big schools and looking good doing it. I dont think there's a single school who wants to see them in their bracket.

For those who say Nevada, for whatever reason that game we lost to them in the tourney left a really bad taste in my mouth. More than just a big loss, there was something about that team, coach, etc that irked me. I vowed to never root for them ever...

My FAV non BCS BB school is: Incarnate Word

Yes, it's a real school. Their first year at D1 so not eligible for post season play yet but yo, they have one heck of an offense. #8 in the country!

From the Southland Conference, same as Oral Roberts.

They came very close to knocking off 27-2 Stephen F. Austin on the road but fell 76-74 ...Go Cardinal!

Interesting old thread to dig up. Some schools like Winthrop and Nevada have completely fallen off the map after brief runs. Southern Illinois was good for quite a few years but they've really fallen on hard times. I think they got kinda unpopular after the fallout w/ their brawl w/ Cincinnati several years ago, but I have a huge amount of respect for what Xavier has accomplished over the years. They've been making Tourney appearances regularly at least back to the late 80's and winning a game or two while they've been there is not uncommon. A bunch of different coaches over the years, have moved to better conferences a couple times, but the winning continues.

Indeed. His post on the equestirennes at Stanford ruining his blissful drive up I 280 from the South Bay to the city was vintage. Anybody still have it?

Obviuosly I vote for Creighton, even though they have tubed it in the last two games. They suffer from some of the same issues as the Zags: inconsistent guard play and leaky perimeter defense. Although they have #3, and once they get into the Tournament, there are going to be a lot of teams left scratching their heads. It looks like if the present trend continues, the Jays will be a lower seed, making a GU vs. Crieghton match up more likely. They will probably score over 200 points.
